A Lament for the Princes of Israel
1 “As for you, take H5375 up H5375 a lamentation H7015 for the princes H5387 of Israel H3478
2 and say H559,
‘[fn]What H4100 was your mother H517?
A lioness H3833 among H996 lions H738!
She lay H7257 down H7257 among H8432 young H3715 lions H3715;
She reared H7235 her cubs H1482.
3 ‘So she brought H5927 up H5927 one H259 of her cubs H1482;
And he learned H3925 to tear H2963 his prey H2964;
4 ‘Then nations H1471 heard H8085 about H413 him;
He was captured H8610 in their pit H7845,
And they brought H935 him with hooks H2397
To the land H776 of Egypt H4714.
5 ‘Then she saw H7200, as she waited H3176,
That her hope H8615 was lost H6,
So she took H3947 [fn]another H259 of her cubs H1482
And made H7760 him a young H3715 lion H3715.
6 ‘And he walked H1980 about H1980 among H8432 the lions H738;
He became H1961 a young H3715 lion H3715;
He learned H3925 to tear H2963 his prey H2964;
7 ‘He [fn]knew H7489 how to destroy their [fn]fortified H759 towers H759
And laid H2717 waste H2717 their cities H5892;
And the land H776 was in desolation H3456, as well as its fullness H4393
Because H4480 of the sound H6963 of his roaring H7581.
8 ‘Then nations H1471 put H5414 themselves against H5921 him
All H5439 around H5439 from their provinces H4082,
And they spread H6566 their net H7568 over H5921 him;
He was captured H8610 in their pit H7845.
9 ‘They put H5414 him in a cage H5474 with hooks H2397
And brought H935 him to the king H4428 of Babylon H894;
They brought H935 him in hunting H4685 nets H4685
So H4616 that his voice H6963 would be heard H8085 no H3808 more H5750
On the mountains H2022 of Israel H3478.
10 ‘Your mother H517 was like a vine H1612 in your [fn]vineyard,
Planted H8362 by the waters H4325;
It was fruitful H6509 and full H6058 of H6058 branches H6058
Because H4480 of abundant H7227 waters H4325.
11 ‘And it had H1961 [fn]strong H5797 thick H4294 branches H4294 fit for scepters H7626 of rulers H4910,
And its height H6967 was exalted H1361 above H5921 H996 the clouds H5645
So that it was seen H7200 in its exaltedness H1363 with the mass H7230 of its foliage H1808.
12 ‘But it was uprooted H5428 in wrath H2534;
It was cast H7993 down H7993 to the ground H776;
And the east H6921 wind H7307 dried H3001 up H3001 its fruit H6529.
Its [fn]strong H5797 thick H4294 branch H4294 [fn]was torn H6561 off H6561
So that [fn]it dried H3001 up H3001;
The fire H784 consumed H398 it.
13 ‘So now H6258 it is planted H8362 in the wilderness H4057,
In a dry H6723 and thirsty H6772 land H776.
14 ‘And fire H784 has gone H3318 out H3318 from its thick H4294 branch H4294;
It has consumed H398 its shoots H909 and fruit H6529,
So that there is not in it a [fn]strong H5797 thick H4294 branch H4294,
A scepter H7626 to rule H4910.’”
This H1931 is a lamentation H7015 and has become H1961 a lamentation H7015.
