Sarai and Hagar

1 Now Sarai ^H8297, Abram’s ^H87 wife ^H802, had borne ^H3205 him no ^H3808 children, and she had an Egyptian ^H4713 servant-woman ^H8198 whose name ^H8034 was Hagar ^H1904.

2 So Sarai ^H8297 said ^H559 to Abram ^H87, “Now ^H4994 behold ^H2009, Yahweh ^H3068 has shut ^H6113 my womb from bearing ^H3205 children. Please ^H4994 go ^H935 in ^H935 to my servant-woman ^H8198; perhaps ^H194 I will [fn]obtain ^H1129 children ^H1129 through ^H4480 her.” And Abram ^H87 listened ^H8085 to the voice ^H6963 of Sarai ^H8297. 3 And after ^H4480 Abram ^H87 had [fn]lived ^H3427 ten ^H6235 years ^H8141 in the land ^H776 of Canaan ^H3667, Abram’s ^H87 wife ^H802 Sarai ^H8297 took ^H3947 Hagar ^H1904 the Egyptian ^H4713, her servant-woman ^H8198, and gave ^H5414 her to her husband ^H376 Abram ^H87 as his wife ^H802. 4 So he went ^H935 in ^H935 to Hagar ^H1904, and she conceived ^H2029. Then she saw ^H7200 that she had conceived ^H2029, so her mistress ^H1404 became ^H7043 [fn]contemptible ^H7043 in her sight ^H5869. 5 And Sarai ^H8297 said ^H559 to Abram ^H87, “May the violence ^H2555 done to me be upon you. I gave ^H5414 my servant-woman ^H8198 into your [fn]embrace ^H2436, but she saw ^H7200 that she had conceived ^H2029, so I became ^H7043 [fn]contemptible ^H7043 in her [fn]sight ^H5869. May Yahweh ^H3068 judge ^H8199 between ^H996 [fn]you and me.” 6 But Abram ^H87 said ^H559 to Sarai ^H8297, “Behold ^H2009, your servant-woman ^H8198 is in your [fn]hand ^H3027; do ^H6213 to her what ^H2896 is ^H2896 good ^H2896 in your [fn]sight ^H5869.” So Sarai ^H8297 afflicted ^H6031 her, and she fled ^H1272 from her presence ^H6440.

7 Now the angel ^H4397 of Yahweh ^H3068 found ^H4672 her by a spring ^H5869 of water ^H4325 in the wilderness ^H4057, by the spring ^H5869 on the way ^H1870 to Shur ^H7793. 8 And he said ^H559, “Hagar ^H1904, Sarai’s ^H8297 servant-woman ^H8198, where ^H335 H2088 have you come ^H935 from and where ^H575 are you going ^H1980?” And she said ^H559, “I am fleeing ^H1272 from the presence ^H6440 of my mistress ^H1404 Sarai ^H8297.” 9 Then the angel ^H4397 of Yahweh ^H3068 said ^H559 to her, “Return ^H7725 to your mistress ^H1404 and [fn]humble ^H6031 yourself under her hands ^H3027.” 10 Moreover, the angel ^H4397 of Yahweh ^H3068 said ^H559 to her, “I will greatly ^H7235 multiply ^H7235 your seed ^H2233 so that [fn]they will be too ^H3808 many ^H7230 to be counted ^H5608.” 11 And the angel ^H4397 of Yahweh ^H3068 said ^H559 to her further,

“Behold ^H2009, you [fn]are with child ^H2030,

And you will bear ^H3205 a son ^H1121;

And you shall call ^H7121 his name ^H8034 [fn]Ishmael ^H3458,

Because ^H3588 Yahweh ^H3068 has heard ^H8085 your affliction ^H6040.

12 “And he will be a wild ^H6501 donkey ^H6501 of a man ^H120,

His hand ^H3027 will be against everyone ^H3605,

And everyone’s ^H3605 hand ^H3027 will be against him;

And he will dwell ^H7931 [fn]in ^H5921 H6440 the ^H5921 H6440 face ^H5921 H6440 of all ^H3605 his brothers ^H251.”

13 Then she called ^H7121 the name ^H8034 of Yahweh ^H3068 who spoke ^H1696 to her, “[fn]You are [fn]a God ^H410 who ^H7210 sees ^H7200”; for she said ^H559, “Have I even ^H1571 [fn]remained ^H7200 alive ^H7200 here ^H1988 after ^H310 seeing ^H7210 Him?” 14 Therefore ^H5921 H3651 the well ^H875 was called ^H7121 [fn]Beer-lahai-roi ^H883; behold ^H2009, it is between ^H996 Kadesh ^H6946 and Bered ^H1260.

15 So Hagar ^H1904 bore ^H3205 Abram ^H87 a son ^H1121; and Abram ^H87 called ^H7121 the name ^H8034 of his son ^H1121, whom ^H834 Hagar ^H1904 bore ^H3205, Ishmael ^H3458. 16 Now Abram ^H87 was eighty-six ^H8084 years ^H8141 old ^H1121 when Hagar ^H1904 bore ^H3205 Ishmael ^H3458 to [fn]him.
