Cain and Abel

1 Now the man ^H120 [fn]knew ^H3045 his wife ^H802 Eve ^H2332, and she conceived ^H2029 and [fn]gave ^H3205 birth ^H3205 to [fn]Cain ^H7014, and she said ^H559, “I have gotten ^H7069 a [fn]man ^H376 with the help of Yahweh ^H3068.”

2 And again ^H3254, she [fn]gave ^H3205 birth ^H3205 to his brother ^H251 Abel ^H1893. Abel ^H1893 was a keeper ^H7462 of flocks ^H6629, but Cain ^H7014 was a cultivator ^H5647 of the ground ^H127. 3 So it happened ^H1961 [fn]in the course ^H4480 H7093 of time ^H3117 that Cain ^H7014 brought ^H935 an offering ^H4503 to Yahweh ^H3068 of the fruit ^H6529 of the ground ^H127. 4 Abel ^H1893, on his part ^H1571, also ^H1571 brought ^H935 of the firstborn ^H1060 of his flock ^H6629 and of their fat ^H2459 portions ^H2459. And Yahweh ^H3068 had ^H8159 regard ^H8159 for Abel ^H1893 and for his offering ^H4503; 5 but for Cain ^H7014 and for his offering ^H4503 He had ^H8159 no ^H3808 regard ^H8159. So Cain ^H7014 became ^H2734 very ^H3966 angry ^H2734, and his countenance ^H6440 fell ^H5307. 6 Then Yahweh ^H3068 said ^H559 to Cain ^H7014, “Why ^H4100 are ^H2734 you angry ^H2734? And why ^H4100 has your countenance ^H6440 fallen ^H5307? 7 If ^H518 you do ^H3190 well ^H3190, [fn]will not your countenance be lifted ^H7613 up? And if ^H518 you do not do ^H3190 well ^H3190, sin ^H2403 is lying ^H7257 at the door ^H6607; and its desire ^H8669 is for you, but you must rule ^H4910 over it.” 8 Then Cain ^H7014 [fn]spoke ^H559 to Abel ^H1893 his brother ^H251; and it happened ^H1961 when they were in the field ^H7704, that Cain ^H7014 rose ^H6965 up ^H6965 against ^H413 Abel ^H1893 his brother ^H251 and killed ^H2026 him.

9 Then Yahweh ^H3068 said ^H559 to Cain ^H7014, “Where ^H335 is Abel ^H1893 your brother ^H251?” And he said ^H559, “I do not know ^H3045. Am I my brother’s ^H251 keeper ^H8104?” 10 And He said ^H559, “What ^H4100 have you done ^H6213? The voice ^H6963 of your brother’s ^H251 blood ^H1818 is crying ^H6817 out ^H6817 to Me from the ground ^H127. 11 And now ^H6258, cursed ^H779 are you from the ground ^H127, which ^H834 has opened ^H6475 its mouth ^H6310 to receive ^H3947 your brother’s ^H251 blood ^H1818 from your hand ^H3027. 12 When ^H3588 you cultivate ^H5647 the ground ^H127, it will no ^H3808 longer ^H3254 yield ^H5414 its strength ^H3581 to you; you will be a vagrant ^H5128 and a wanderer ^H5110 on the earth ^H776.” 13 And Cain ^H7014 said ^H559 to Yahweh ^H3068, “My punishment ^H5771 is too ^H4480 great ^H1419 to bear ^H5375! 14 Behold ^H2005, You have driven ^H1644 me this day ^H3117 from the face ^H6440 of the ground ^H127; and from Your face ^H6440 I will be hidden ^H5641, and I will be a vagrant ^H5128 and a wanderer ^H5110 on the earth ^H776, and it will be that whoever ^H3605 finds ^H4672 me will kill ^H2026 me.” 15 So Yahweh ^H3068 said ^H559 to him, “Therefore ^H3651 whoever ^H3605 kills ^H2026 Cain ^H7014, vengeance ^H5358 will be taken ^H5358 on him sevenfold ^H7659.” And Yahweh ^H3068 [fn]appointed ^H7760 a sign ^H226 for Cain ^H7014, so that no ^H3605 one ^H3605 who found ^H4672 him would strike ^H5221 him.

16 Then Cain ^H7014 went ^H3318 out ^H3318 from the presence ^H6440 of Yahweh ^H3068 and [fn]settled ^H3427 in the land ^H776 of [fn]Nod ^H5113, east ^H6926 of Eden ^H5731.

17 Then Cain ^H7014 [fn]knew ^H3045 his wife ^H802, and she conceived ^H2029 and [fn]gave ^H3205 birth ^H3205 to Enoch ^H2585; and he built ^H1129 a city ^H5892 and called ^H7121 the name ^H8034 of the city ^H5892 Enoch ^H2585, after the name ^H8034 of his son ^H1121. 18 Now to Enoch ^H2585 was born ^H3205 Irad ^H5897, and Irad ^H5897 [fn]was ^H3205 the father ^H3205 of Mehujael ^H4232, and Mehujael ^H4232 [fn]was ^H3205 the father ^H3205 of Methushael ^H4967, and Methushael ^H4967 [fn]was ^H3205 the father ^H3205 of Lamech ^H3929. 19 And Lamech ^H3929 took ^H3947 for himself two ^H8147 wives ^H802: the name ^H8034 of the one ^H259 was Adah ^H5711, and the name ^H8034 of the other ^H8145, Zillah ^H6741. 20 And Adah ^H5711 [fn]gave ^H3205 birth ^H3205 to Jabal ^H2989; he was the father ^H1 of those who live ^H3427 in tents ^H168 and have livestock ^H4735. 21 And his brother’s ^H251 name ^H8034 was Jubal ^H3106; he was the father ^H1 of all ^H3605 those who play ^H8610 the lyre ^H3658 and pipe ^H5748. 22 As for Zillah ^H6741, she also ^H1571 [fn]gave ^H3205 birth ^H3205 to Tubal-cain ^H8423, the forger ^H3913 of all ^H3605 implements ^H2790 of bronze ^H5178 and iron ^H1270; and the sister ^H269 of Tubal-cain ^H8423 was Naamah ^H5279.

23 And Lamech ^H3929 said ^H559 to his wives ^H802,

“Adah ^H5711 and Zillah ^H6741,

Hear ^H8085 my voice ^H6963,

You wives ^H802 of Lamech ^H3929,

Give ^H238 ear ^H238 to my word ^H565,

For I [fn]have killed ^H2026 a man ^H376 for [fn]striking ^H6482 me;

And a boy ^H3206 for wounding ^H2250 me;

24 If ^H3588 Cain ^H7014 is avenged ^H5358 sevenfold ^H7659,

Then Lamech ^H3929 seventy-sevenfold ^H7657.”

25 Then Adam ^H121 [fn]knew ^H3045 his wife ^H802 again ^H5750; and she [fn]gave ^H3205 birth ^H3205 to a son ^H1121 and named ^H7121 H8034 him [fn]Seth ^H8352, for she said, “God ^H430 [fn]has set ^H7896 for me another ^H312 [fn]seed ^H2233 in ^H8478 place ^H8478 of ^H8478 Abel ^H1893, for Cain ^H7014 killed ^H2026 him.” 26 And to Seth ^H8352, to him also ^H1571, a son ^H1121 was born ^H3205; and he called ^H7121 his name ^H8034 Enosh ^H583. Then ^H227 men began ^H2490 to call ^H7121 [fn]upon the name ^H8034 of Yahweh ^H3068.
