The Broken Covenant

1 The word ^H1697 which ^H834 came ^H1961 to Jeremiah ^H3414 from Yahweh ^H3068, saying ^H559,

2 “Hear ^H8085 the words ^H1697 of this ^H2088 covenant ^H1285, and you shall speak ^H1696 to the men ^H376 of Judah ^H3063 and to the inhabitants ^H3427 of Jerusalem ^H3389 3 and say ^H559 to them, ‘Thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Yahweh ^H3068, the God ^H430 of Israel ^H3478, “Cursed ^H779 is the man ^H376 who ^H834 does not hear ^H8085 the words ^H1697 of this ^H2088 covenant ^H1285 4 which ^H834 I commanded ^H6680 your fathers ^H1 in the day ^H3117 that I brought ^H3318 them out of the land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714, from the iron ^H1270 furnace ^H3564, saying ^H559, ‘Listen ^H8085 to My voice ^H6963, and [fn]do ^H6213 according to all ^H3605 which ^H834 I command ^H6680 you; so you shall be My people ^H5971, and I will be your God ^H430,’ 5 in order ^H4616 to establish ^H6965 the oath ^H7621 which ^H834 I swore ^H7650 to your fathers ^H1, to give ^H5414 them a land ^H776 flowing ^H2100 with milk ^H2461 and honey ^H1706, as it is this ^H2088 day ^H3117.”’” Then I answered ^H6030 and said ^H559, “Amen ^H543, O Yahweh ^H3068.”

6 And Yahweh ^H3068 said ^H559 to me, “Call ^H7121 out ^H7121 all ^H3605 these ^H428 words ^H1697 in the cities ^H5892 of Judah ^H3063 and in the streets ^H2351 of Jerusalem ^H3389, saying ^H559, ‘Hear ^H8085 the words ^H1697 of this ^H2088 covenant ^H1285 so that you will do ^H6213 them. 7 For I solemnly ^H5749 warned ^H5749 your fathers ^H1 in ^H5749 the day ^H3117 that I brought ^H5927 them up ^H5927 from the land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714, even to this ^H2088 day ^H3117, rising ^H7925 up ^H7925 early ^H7925 and warning ^H5749, saying ^H559, “Listen ^H8085 to My voice ^H6963.” 8 Yet they did ^H6213 not listen ^H8085 or incline ^H5186 their ear ^H241, but walked ^H1980, each ^H376 one ^H376, in the stubbornness ^H8307 of his evil ^H7451 heart ^H3820; therefore I brought ^H935 on them all ^H3605 the words ^H1697 of this ^H2088 covenant ^H1285, which ^H834 I commanded ^H6680 them to do ^H6213, but they did ^H6213 not.’”

9 Then Yahweh ^H3068 said ^H559 to me, “A conspiracy ^H7195 has been found ^H4672 among the men ^H376 of Judah ^H3063 and among the inhabitants ^H3427 of Jerusalem ^H3389. 10 They have turned ^H7725 back ^H7725 to the iniquities ^H5771 of their [fn]ancestors ^H7223 who ^H834 refused ^H3985 to hear ^H8085 My words ^H1697, and they have walked ^H1980 after ^H310 other ^H312 gods ^H430 to serve ^H5647 them; the house ^H1004 of Israel ^H3478 and the house ^H1004 of Judah ^H3063 have broken ^H6565 My covenant ^H1285 which ^H834 I cut ^H3772 with their fathers ^H1.” 11 Therefore ^H3651 thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Yahweh ^H3068, “Behold ^H2009, I am bringing ^H935 calamity ^H7451 on them which ^H834 they will not be ^H3201 able ^H3201 to get ^H3318 out ^H3318 of; and they will cry ^H2199 to Me, yet I will not listen ^H8085 to them. 12 Then the cities ^H5892 of Judah ^H3063 and the inhabitants ^H3427 of Jerusalem ^H3389 will go ^H1980 and cry ^H2199 to the gods ^H430 to whom ^H834 they burn ^H6999 incense ^H6999, but they surely ^H3467 will not save ^H3467 them in the time ^H6256 of their calamity ^H7451. 13 For your gods ^H430 are the number ^H4557 of your cities ^H5892, O Judah ^H3063; and the number ^H4557 of the streets ^H2351 of Jerusalem ^H3389 are the altars ^H4196 you have set ^H7760 up ^H7760 to the shameful ^H1322 thing ^H1322, altars ^H4196 to burn ^H6999 incense ^H6999 to Baal ^H1168.

14 “But as for you, do not pray ^H6419 for this ^H2088 people ^H5971, nor ^H408 lift ^H5375 up ^H5375 a cry ^H7440 of lamentation ^H7440 or prayer ^H8605 for them; for I will not listen ^H8085 when ^H6256 they call ^H7121 to Me because ^H1157 of their calamity ^H7451.

15 “What ^H4100 possession has My beloved ^H3039 in My house ^H1004

When ^H3588 she has done ^H6213 many ^H7227 schemes ^H4209 of wickedness ^H4209?

Can the flesh ^H1320, which is set ^H6944 apart ^H6944 as ^H6944 holy ^H6944, take ^H5674 away ^H5674 from you your calamity ^H7451,

[fn]So ^H227 that you can exult ^H5937?”

16 Yahweh ^H3068 called ^H7121 your name ^H8034,

“A green ^H7488 olive ^H2132 tree ^H2132, beautiful ^H3303 in fruit ^H6529 and form ^H8389”;

With the noise ^H6963 of a great ^H1419 tumult ^H1999

He has kindled ^H3341 fire ^H784 on it,

And its foliage ^H1808 has an evil ^H7489 demise.

17 Yahweh ^H3068 of hosts ^H6635, who planted ^H5193 you, has spoken ^H1696 forth evil ^H7451 against ^H5921 you because ^H1558 of the evil ^H7451 of the house ^H1004 of Israel ^H3478 and of the house ^H1004 of Judah ^H3063, which ^H834 they have [fn]done ^H6213 to provoke ^H3707 Me to anger ^H3707 by burning ^H6999 incense ^H6999 to Baal ^H1168.

Men Seek Jeremiah’s Life

18 Moreover, Yahweh ^H3068 made ^H3045 it known ^H3045 to me, and I knew ^H3045 it;

Then ^H227 You showed ^H7200 me their deeds ^H4611.

19 But I was like a gentle ^H441 lamb ^H3532 led ^H2986 to the slaughter ^H2873;

And I did not know ^H3045 that they had devised ^H2803 thoughts ^H4284 against ^H5921 me, saying,

“Let us make ^H7843 the tree ^H6086 with its [fn]fruit ^H3899 a ruin ^H7843,

And let us cut ^H3772 him off ^H3772 from the land ^H776 of the living ^H2416,

That his name ^H8034 be remembered ^H2142 no ^H3808 more ^H5750.”

20 But, O Yahweh ^H3068 of hosts ^H6635, who judges ^H8199 righteously ^H6664,

Who tests ^H974 the [fn]insides ^H3629 and the heart ^H3820,

Let me see ^H7200 Your vengeance ^H5360 on them,

For to You have I revealed ^H1540 my case ^H7379.

21 Therefore ^H3651 thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Yahweh ^H3068 concerning ^H5921 the men ^H376 of Anathoth ^H6068, who seek ^H1245 your life ^H5315, saying ^H559, “Do not prophesy ^H5012 in the name ^H8034 of Yahweh ^H3068, so ^H3808 that you will not die ^H4191 at our hand ^H3027”;

22 therefore ^H3651 thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Yahweh ^H3068 of hosts ^H6635, “Behold ^H2009, I am about to punish ^H6485 them! The choice ^H970 men ^H970 will die ^H4191 by the sword ^H2719; their sons ^H1121 and daughters ^H1323 will die ^H4191 by famine ^H7458; 23 and a remnant ^H7611 will not be left ^H1961 to them, for I will bring ^H935 calamity ^H7451 on the men ^H376 of Anathoth ^H6068—the year ^H8141 of their punishment ^H6486.”
