O Land, Hear Yahweh

1 Thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Yahweh ^H3068, “Go ^H3381 down ^H3381 to the house ^H1004 of the king ^H4428 of Judah ^H3063, and there ^H8033 you shall speak ^H1696 this ^H2088 word ^H1697

2 and say ^H559, ‘Hear ^H8085 the word ^H1697 of Yahweh ^H3068, O king ^H4428 of Judah ^H3063, who sits ^H3427 on David’s ^H1732 throne ^H3678, you and your servants ^H5650 and your people ^H5971 who enter ^H935 these ^H428 gates ^H8179. 3 Thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Yahweh ^H3068, “Do ^H6213 justice ^H4941 and righteousness ^H6666, and deliver ^H5337 the one who has been robbed ^H1497 from the power ^H3027 of his oppressor ^H6216. Also do not mistreat ^H3238 or do ^H2554 violence ^H2554 to the sojourner ^H1616, the orphan ^H3490, or the widow ^H490; and do not shed ^H8210 innocent ^H5355 blood ^H1818 in this ^H2088 place ^H4725. 4 For if ^H518 you men will indeed ^H6213 do ^H6213 this ^H2088 thing ^H1697, then kings ^H4428 will enter ^H935 the gates ^H8179 of this ^H2088 house ^H1004, sitting ^H3427 for David ^H1732 on his throne ^H3678, riding ^H7392 in chariots ^H7393 and on horses ^H5483, even the king himself ^H1931 and his servants ^H5650 and his people ^H5971. 5 But if ^H518 you will not obey ^H8085 these ^H428 words ^H1697, I swear ^H7650 by Myself,” declares ^H5002 Yahweh ^H3068, “that this ^H2088 house ^H1004 will become ^H1961 a waste ^H2723 place ^H2723.”’” 6 For thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Yahweh ^H3068 concerning ^H5921 the house ^H1004 of the king ^H4428 of Judah ^H3063:

“You are like Gilead ^H1568 to Me,

Like the summit ^H7218 of Lebanon ^H3844;

Yet most ^H518 H3808 assuredly ^H518 H3808 I will make ^H7896 you like a wilderness ^H4057,

Like cities ^H5892 which are not inhabited ^H3427.

7 “For I will set ^H6942 apart ^H6942 destroyers ^H7843 against ^H5921 you,

Each ^H376 with his weapons ^H3627;

And they will cut ^H3772 down ^H3772 your choicest ^H4005 cedars ^H730

And throw ^H5307 them on the fire ^H784.

8 “Many ^H7227 nations ^H1471 will pass ^H5674 by this ^H2088 city ^H5892; and they will say ^H559 to one ^H376 another ^H7453, ‘Why ^H5921 H4100 has Yahweh ^H3068 done ^H6213 thus ^H3602 to this ^H2088 great ^H1419 city ^H5892?’ 9 Then they will say ^H559, ‘Because ^H5921 H834 they forsook ^H5800 the covenant ^H1285 of Yahweh ^H3068 their God ^H430 and worshiped ^H2331 other ^H312 gods ^H430 and served ^H5647 them.’”

10 Do not weep ^H1058 for the dead ^H4191 or console ^H5110 him,

But weep ^H1058 continually ^H1058 for the one who goes ^H1980 away,

For he will never ^H3808 H5750 return ^H7725

Or see ^H7200 the land ^H776 of his birth ^H4138.

11 For thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Yahweh ^H3068 in regard ^H413 to [fn]Shallum ^H7967 the son ^H1121 of Josiah ^H2977, king ^H4428 of Judah ^H3063, who became ^H4427 king ^H4427 in ^H8478 the place ^H8478 of ^H8478 Josiah ^H2977 his father ^H1, who ^H834 went ^H3318 forth ^H3318 from this ^H2088 place ^H4725, “He will never ^H3808 H5750 return ^H7725 there ^H8033; 12 but in the place ^H4725 where ^H834 H8033 they took ^H1540 him away ^H1540 into ^H1540 exile ^H1540, there ^H8033 he will die ^H4191 and not see ^H7200 this ^H2088 land ^H776 again ^H5750.

13 “Woe ^H1945 to him who builds ^H1129 his house ^H1004 without ^H3808 righteousness ^H6664

And his [fn]upper ^H5944 rooms ^H5944 without ^H3808 justice ^H4941,

Who uses ^H5647 his neighbor’s ^H7453 services ^H5647 without ^H2600 pay ^H2600

And does not give ^H5414 him his wages ^H6467,

14 Who says ^H559, ‘I will build ^H1129 myself a roomy ^H4060 house ^H1004

With spacious ^H7304 [fn]upper ^H5944 rooms ^H5944

And cut ^H7167 out ^H7167 its windows ^H2474,

[fn]Paneling ^H5603 it with cedar ^H730 and painting ^H4886 it [fn]bright ^H8350 red ^H8350.’

15 “Do you become ^H4427 a ^H4427 king ^H4427 because ^H3588 you are competing ^H2734 in cedar ^H730?

Did not your father ^H1 eat ^H398 and drink ^H8354

And do ^H6213 justice ^H4941 and righteousness ^H6666?

Then ^H227 it was well ^H2895 with him.

16 “He pled ^H1777 the cause ^H1779 of the afflicted ^H6041 and needy ^H34;

Then ^H227 it was well ^H2895.

Is not that what it means to know ^H1847 Me?”

Declares ^H5002 Yahweh ^H3068.

17 “But your eyes ^H5869 and your heart ^H3820

Are set on nothing ^H369 except ^H3588 H518 your own greedy ^H1215 gain ^H1215

And on shedding ^H8210 innocent ^H5355 blood ^H1818

And on doing ^H6213 oppression ^H6233 and extortion ^H4835.”

18 Therefore ^H3651 thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Yahweh ^H3068 in regard ^H413 to Jehoiakim ^H3079 the son ^H1121 of Josiah ^H2977, king ^H4428 of Judah ^H3063,

“They will not lament ^H5594 for him:

‘Alas ^H1945, my brother ^H251!’ or, ‘Alas ^H1945, sister ^H269!’

They will not lament ^H5594 for him:

‘Alas ^H1945 for the master ^H113!’ or, ‘Alas ^H1945 for his splendor ^H1935!’

19 “He will be buried ^H6912 with a donkey’s ^H2543 burial ^H6900,

Dragged ^H5498 off ^H5498 and thrown ^H7993 out ^H7993 beyond ^H4480 H1973 the gates ^H8179 of Jerusalem ^H3389.

20 “Go ^H5927 up ^H5927 to Lebanon ^H3844 and cry ^H6817 out ^H6817,

And lift ^H5414 up ^H5414 your voice ^H6963 in Bashan ^H1316;

Cry ^H6817 out ^H6817 also from Abarim ^H5682,

For all ^H3605 your lovers ^H157 have been broken ^H7665.

21 “I spoke ^H1696 to you in your prosperity ^H7962,

But you said ^H559, ‘I will not listen ^H8085!’

This ^H2088 has been your way ^H1870 from your youth ^H5271,

That you have not listened ^H8085 to My voice ^H6963.

22 “The wind ^H7307 will sweep ^H7462 away ^H7462 all ^H3605 your shepherds ^H7462,

And your lovers ^H157 will go ^H1980 into captivity ^H7628;

Then ^H227 you will surely ^H3588 be ^H954 ashamed ^H954 and feel ^H3637 dishonor ^H3637

Because ^H4480 of all ^H3605 your evil ^H7451.

23 “You who inhabit ^H3427 Lebanon ^H3844,

Nested ^H7077 in the cedars ^H730,

How ^H4100 you will groan ^H584 when pangs ^H2256 come ^H935 upon you,

Pain ^H2427 like a woman in ^H3205 childbirth ^H3205!

24 “As I live ^H2416,” declares ^H5002 Yahweh ^H3068, “even ^H3588 though ^H518 [fn]Coniah ^H3078 the son ^H1121 of Jehoiakim ^H3079 king ^H4428 of Judah ^H3063 were a signet ^H2368 ring on My right ^H3225 hand ^H3027, yet ^H3588 I would pull ^H5423 [fn]you [fn]off ^H5423; 25 and I will give ^H5414 you over into the hand ^H3027 of those who are seeking ^H1245 your life ^H5315, indeed, into the hand ^H3027 of those whom ^H834 you dread ^H3016, even into the hand ^H3027 of Nebuchadnezzar ^H5019 king ^H4428 of Babylon ^H894 and into the hand ^H3027 of the Chaldeans ^H3778. 26 I will hurl ^H2904 you and your mother ^H517 who ^H834 bore ^H3205 you into another ^H312 land ^H776—there ^H834 H8033 you were not born ^H3205, but there ^H8033 you will die ^H4191. 27 But as for the land ^H776 to which ^H834 their soul ^H5315 desires ^H5375 to return ^H7725, they will not return ^H7725 to it.

28 “Is this ^H2088 man ^H376 Coniah ^H3078 a despised ^H959, shattered ^H5310 jar ^H6089?

Or ^H518 is he an undesirable ^H369 H2656 vessel ^H3627?

Why ^H4069 have he and his seed ^H2233 been hurled ^H2904 out ^H2904

And cast ^H7993 into a land ^H776 that they had not known ^H3045?

29 “O land ^H776, land ^H776, land ^H776,

Hear ^H8085 the word ^H1697 of Yahweh ^H3068!

30 Thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Yahweh ^H3068,

‘Write ^H3789 this ^H2088 man ^H1397 down ^H3789 childless ^H6185,

A man ^H1397 who will not succeed ^H6743 in his days ^H3117;

For no ^H3808 man ^H376 of his seed ^H2233 will succeed ^H6743

Sitting ^H3427 on the throne ^H3678 of David ^H1732

Or ruling ^H4910 again ^H5750 in Judah ^H3063.’”
