The Polluted Land

1 God [fn]says ^H559, “If ^H2005 a husband ^H376 divorces ^H7971 his wife ^H802

And she goes ^H1980 from him

And belongs ^H1961 to another ^H312 man ^H376,

Will he still ^H5750 return ^H7725 to her?

Will not that land ^H776 be completely ^H2610 [fn]polluted ^H2610?

But you are a harlot ^H2181 with many ^H7227 [fn]lovers ^H7453;

Yet you turn ^H7725 to Me,” declares ^H5002 Yahweh ^H3068.

2 “Lift ^H5375 up ^H5375 your eyes ^H5869 to the bare ^H8205 heights ^H8205 and see ^H7200;

Where ^H375 have you not been ravished ^H7693?

By the roads ^H1870 you have sat ^H3427 for them

Like [fn]an Arab ^H6163 in the wilderness ^H4057,

And you have polluted ^H2610 a land ^H776

With your harlotry ^H2183 and with your evil ^H7451.

3 “Therefore the showers ^H7241 have been withheld ^H4513,

And the [fn]late ^H4456 rain ^H4456 has not ^H3808 [fn]come ^H1961.

Yet you had ^H1961 a harlot’s ^H802 H2181 forehead ^H4696;

You refused ^H3985 to feel ^H3637 dishonor ^H3637.

4 “Have you not just now ^H6258 called ^H7121 to Me,

‘My Father ^H1, You are the [fn]close ^H441 companion ^H441 of my youth ^H5271?

5 ‘Will He be ^H5201 angry ^H5201 forever ^H5769?

Will He keep ^H8104 it to the end ^H5331?’

Behold ^H2009, you have spoken ^H1696

And have done ^H6213 evil ^H7451 things ^H7451,

And you have [fn]had ^H3201 your way ^H3201.”

Faithless Israel Called to Repentance

6 Then Yahweh ^H3068 said ^H559 to me in the days ^H3117 of Josiah ^H2977 the king ^H4428, “Have you seen ^H7200 what ^H834 faithless ^H4878 Israel ^H3478 did ^H6213? She went ^H1980 up on every ^H3605 high ^H1364 hill ^H2022 and under ^H8478 every ^H3605 green ^H7488 tree ^H6086, and she was a harlot ^H2181 there ^H8033.

7 I said ^H559, ‘After ^H310 she has done ^H6213 all ^H3605 these ^H428 things ^H428, she will return ^H7725 to Me’; but she did not return ^H7725, and her treacherous ^H901 sister ^H269 Judah ^H3063 saw ^H7200 it. 8 And I saw ^H7200 that for all ^H3605 the adulteries ^H5003 of faithless ^H4878 Israel ^H3478, I had sent ^H7971 her away ^H7971 and given ^H5414 her a certificate ^H5612 of divorce ^H3748, yet her treacherous ^H898 sister ^H269 Judah ^H3063 did not fear ^H3372; but she went ^H1980 and was a harlot ^H2181 also ^H1571. 9 So it was, because ^H4480 of the lightness ^H6963 of her harlotry ^H2184, that she polluted ^H2610 the land ^H776 and committed ^H5003 adultery ^H5003 with stones ^H68 and trees ^H6086. 10 Yet ^H1571 in spite of all ^H3605 this ^H2088, her treacherous ^H901 sister ^H269 Judah ^H3063 did not return ^H7725 to Me with all ^H3605 her heart ^H3820, but rather ^H3588 H518 in lying ^H8267,” declares ^H5002 Yahweh ^H3068.

11 And Yahweh ^H3068 said ^H559 to me, “Faithless ^H4878 Israel ^H3478 has proved ^H6663 herself ^H5315 more ^H4480 righteous ^H6663 than ^H4480 treacherous ^H898 Judah ^H3063. 12 Go ^H1980 and call ^H7121 out ^H7121 these ^H428 words ^H1697 toward the north ^H6828 and say ^H559,

‘[fn]Return ^H7725, faithless ^H4878 Israel ^H3478,’ declares ^H5002 Yahweh ^H3068;

‘I will not [fn]look ^H5307 upon you in ^H5307 anger ^H5307.

For I am One ^H2623 of ^H2623 lovingkindness ^H2623,’ declares ^H5002 Yahweh ^H3068;

‘I will not be ^H5201 angry ^H5201 forever ^H5769.

13 ‘Only ^H389 [fn]acknowledge ^H3045 your iniquity ^H5771,

That you have transgressed ^H6586 against Yahweh ^H3068 your God ^H430

And have scattered ^H6340 your ways ^H1870 of harlotry to the strangers ^H2114 under ^H8478 every ^H3605 green ^H7488 tree ^H6086,

And you have not listened ^H8085 to My voice ^H6963,’ declares ^H5002 Yahweh ^H3068.

14 ‘[fn]Return ^H7725, O faithless ^H7726 sons ^H1121,’ declares ^H5002 Yahweh ^H3068;

‘For I am ^H1166 a ^H1166 master ^H1166 to you,

And I will take ^H3947 you one ^H259 from a city ^H5892 and two ^H8147 from a family ^H4940,

And I will bring ^H935 you to Zion ^H6726.’

15 “Then I will give ^H5414 you shepherds ^H7462 after My own heart ^H3820, who will [fn]shepherd ^H7462 you on knowledge ^H1844 and understanding ^H7919. 16 It shall be in those ^H1992 days ^H3117 when ^H3588 you are ^H6509 multiplied ^H7235 and fruitful ^H6509 in the land ^H776,” declares ^H5002 Yahweh ^H3068, “they will no ^H3808 longer ^H5750 say ^H559, ‘The ark ^H727 of the covenant ^H1285 of Yahweh ^H3068.’ And it will not come ^H5927 upon the heart ^H3820, nor ^H3808 will they remember ^H2142 it, nor ^H3808 will they miss ^H6485 it, nor ^H3808 will it be made ^H6213 again ^H5750. 17 At that time ^H6256 they will call ^H7121 Jerusalem ^H3389 ‘The Throne ^H3678 of Yahweh ^H3068,’ and all ^H3605 the nations ^H1471 will be gathered ^H6960 to it, to Jerusalem ^H3389, for the name ^H8034 of Yahweh ^H3068; nor ^H3808 will they walk ^H1980 anymore ^H5750 after ^H310 the stubbornness ^H8307 of their evil ^H7451 heart ^H3820. 18 In those ^H1992 days ^H3117 the house ^H1004 of Judah ^H3063 will walk ^H1980 with the house ^H1004 of Israel ^H3478, and they will come ^H935 together ^H3162 from the land ^H776 of the north ^H6828 to the land ^H776 that I gave ^H5157 your fathers ^H1 as ^H5157 an ^H5157 inheritance ^H5157.

19 “Then I said ^H559,

‘How ^H349 I would set ^H7896 you among [fn]My sons ^H1121

And give ^H5414 you a pleasant ^H2532 land ^H776,

The most ^H6643 beautiful ^H6643 inheritance ^H5159 of the nations ^H1471!’

And I said ^H559, ‘You shall call ^H7121 Me, “My Father ^H1,”

And not turn ^H7725 away ^H7725 from following ^H310 Me.’

20 “Surely ^H403, as a woman ^H802 treacherously ^H898 departs from her [fn]lover ^H7453,

So ^H3651 you have dealt ^H898 treacherously ^H898 with Me,

O house ^H1004 of Israel ^H3478,” declares ^H5002 Yahweh ^H3068.

21 A voice ^H6963 is heard ^H8085 on the bare ^H8205 heights ^H8205,

The weeping ^H1065 and the supplications ^H8469 of the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478;

Because ^H3588 they have perverted ^H5753 their way ^H1870,

They have forgotten ^H7911 Yahweh ^H3068 their God ^H430.

22 [fn]“Return ^H7725, O faithless ^H7726 sons ^H1121;

I will heal ^H7495 your faithlessness ^H4878.”

“Behold ^H2009, we come ^H857 to You,

For You are Yahweh ^H3068 our God ^H430.

23 “Surely ^H403, the hills ^H1389 are a lie ^H8267,

A tumult ^H1995 on the mountains ^H2022.

Surely ^H403 in Yahweh ^H3068 our God ^H430

Is the salvation ^H8668 of Israel ^H3478.

24 “But the shameful ^H1322 thing ^H1322 has devoured ^H398 the labor ^H3018 of our fathers ^H1 since ^H4480 our youth ^H5271, their flocks ^H6629 and their herds ^H1241, their sons ^H1121 and their daughters ^H1323. 25 Let us lie ^H7901 down ^H7901 in our shame ^H1322, and let our dishonor ^H3639 cover ^H3680 us; for we have sinned ^H2398 against Yahweh ^H3068 our God ^H430, we and our fathers ^H1, from our youth ^H5271 even to this ^H2088 day ^H3117. And we have not listened ^H8085 to the voice ^H6963 of Yahweh ^H3068 our God ^H430.”
