The Rechabites Listen to Jonadab

1 The word ^H1697 which ^H834 came ^H1961 to Jeremiah ^H3414 from Yahweh ^H3068 in the days ^H3117 of Jehoiakim ^H3079 the son ^H1121 of Josiah ^H2977, king ^H4428 of Judah ^H3063, saying ^H559,

2 “Go ^H1980 to the house ^H1004 of the Rechabites ^H7394 and speak ^H1696 to them and bring ^H935 them into the house ^H1004 of Yahweh ^H3068, into one ^H259 of the chambers ^H3957, and give ^H8248 them wine ^H3196 to ^H8248 drink ^H8248.” 3 Then I took ^H3947 Jaazaniah ^H2970 the son ^H1121 of Jeremiah ^H3414, son ^H1121 of Habazziniah ^H2262, and his brothers ^H251 and all ^H3605 his sons ^H1121 and the whole ^H3605 house ^H1004 of the Rechabites ^H7394, 4 and I brought ^H935 them into the house ^H1004 of Yahweh ^H3068, into the chamber ^H3957 of the sons ^H1121 of Hanan ^H2605 the son ^H1121 of Igdaliah ^H3012, the man ^H376 of God ^H430, which ^H834 was beside ^H681 the chamber ^H3957 of the officials ^H8269, which ^H834 was above ^H4480 H4605 the chamber ^H3957 of Maaseiah ^H4641 the son ^H1121 of Shallum ^H7967, the doorkeeper ^H8104 H5592. 5 Then I put ^H5414 before ^H6440 the [fn]men ^H1121 of the house ^H1004 of the Rechabites ^H7394 pitchers ^H1375 full ^H4392 of wine ^H3196 and cups ^H3563; and I said ^H559 to them, “Drink ^H8354 wine ^H3196!” 6 But they said ^H559, “We will not drink ^H8354 wine ^H3196, for Jonadab ^H3082 the son ^H1121 of Rechab ^H7394, our father ^H1, commanded ^H6680 us, saying ^H559, ‘You shall not drink ^H8354 wine ^H3196, you or your sons ^H1121, forever ^H5704 H5769. 7 And you shall not build ^H1129 a house ^H1004, and you shall not sow ^H2232 seed ^H2233, and you shall not plant ^H5193 a vineyard ^H3754 or own ^H1961 one; but tents ^H168 you shall inhabit ^H3427 all ^H3605 your days ^H3117, that you may live ^H2421 many ^H7227 days ^H3117 in the land ^H127 where ^H834 H8033 you sojourn ^H1481.’ 8 So we have listened ^H8085 to the voice ^H6963 of Jonadab ^H3082 the son ^H1121 of Rechab ^H7394, our father ^H1, in all ^H3605 that he commanded ^H6680 us, not to drink ^H8354 wine ^H3196 all ^H3605 our days ^H3117, we, our wives ^H802, our sons ^H1121, or our daughters ^H1323, 9 nor ^H1115 to build ^H1129 ourselves houses ^H1004 to inhabit ^H3427; and we do not have ^H1961 vineyard ^H3754 or field ^H7704 or seed ^H2233. 10 We have only inhabited ^H3427 tents ^H168 and have listened ^H8085 and have done ^H6213 according to all ^H3605 that Jonadab ^H3082 our father ^H1 commanded ^H6680 us. 11 But it happened that when Nebuchadnezzar ^H5019 king ^H4428 of Babylon ^H894 came ^H5927 up ^H5927 against ^H413 the land ^H776, we said ^H559, ‘Come ^H935, let us come ^H935 to Jerusalem ^H3389 before ^H4480 H6440 the military ^H2428 force ^H2428 of the Chaldeans ^H3778 and before ^H4480 H6440 the military ^H2428 force ^H2428 of the Arameans ^H758.’ So we have inhabited ^H3427 Jerusalem ^H3389.”

Yahweh Warns of Judah’s Discipline

12 Then the word ^H1697 of Yahweh ^H3068 came ^H1961 to Jeremiah ^H3414, saying ^H559,

13 “Thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Yahweh ^H3068 of hosts ^H6635, the God ^H430 of Israel ^H3478, ‘Go ^H1980 and say ^H559 to the men ^H376 of Judah ^H3063 and the inhabitants ^H3427 of Jerusalem ^H3389, “Will you not receive ^H3947 discipline ^H4148 by listening ^H8085 to My words ^H1697?” declares ^H5002 Yahweh ^H3068. 14 “The words ^H1697 of Jonadab ^H3082 the son ^H1121 of Rechab ^H7394, which ^H834 he commanded ^H6680 his sons ^H1121, not to drink ^H8354 wine ^H3196, are established ^H6965. So they do not drink ^H8354 wine to this ^H2088 day ^H3117, for they have listened ^H8085 to their father’s ^H1 command ^H4687. But I have spoken ^H1696 to you, rising ^H7925 up ^H7925 early ^H7925 and speaking ^H1696; yet you have not listened ^H8085 to Me. 15 Also I have sent ^H7971 to you all ^H3605 My slaves ^H5650 the prophets ^H5030, rising ^H7925 up ^H7925 early ^H7925 and sending ^H7971, saying ^H559: ‘Turn ^H7725 now ^H4994 every ^H376 man ^H376 from his evil ^H7451 way ^H1870 and make ^H3190 good ^H3190 your deeds ^H4611, and do not walk ^H1980 after ^H310 other ^H312 gods ^H430 to [fn]serve ^H5647 them. Then you will inhabit ^H3427 the land ^H127 which ^H834 I have given ^H5414 to you and to your fathers ^H1; but you have not inclined ^H5186 your ear ^H241 or listened ^H8085 to Me. 16 Indeed ^H3588, the sons ^H1121 of Jonadab ^H3082 the son ^H1121 of Rechab ^H7394 have established ^H6965 the command ^H4687 of their father ^H1 which ^H834 he commanded ^H6680 them, but this ^H2088 people ^H5971 has not listened ^H8085 to Me.’”’ 17 Therefore ^H3651 thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Yahweh ^H3068, the God ^H430 of hosts ^H6635, the God ^H430 of Israel ^H3478, ‘Behold ^H2009, I am bringing ^H935 on Judah ^H3063 and on all ^H3605 the inhabitants ^H3427 of Jerusalem ^H3389 all ^H3605 the harmful evil ^H7451 that I have spoken ^H1696 against ^H5921 them because ^H3282 I spoke ^H1696 to them but they did not listen ^H8085, and I have called ^H7121 them but they did not answer ^H6030.’”

18 Then Jeremiah ^H3414 said ^H559 to the house ^H1004 of the Rechabites ^H7394, “Thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Yahweh ^H3068 of hosts ^H6635, the God ^H430 of Israel ^H3478, ‘Because ^H3282 H834 you have listened ^H8085 to the command ^H4687 of Jonadab ^H3082 your father ^H1, kept ^H8104 all ^H3605 his commands ^H4687, and done ^H6213 according to all ^H3605 that he commanded ^H6680 you, 19 therefore ^H3651 thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Yahweh ^H3068 of hosts ^H6635, the God ^H430 of Israel ^H3478, “Jonadab ^H3082 the son ^H1121 of Rechab ^H7394 shall not have a man ^H376 cut ^H3772 off from standing ^H5975 before ^H6440 Me [fn]always ^H3605 H3117.”’”
