Jerusalem Refuses to Repent

1 “Roam ^H7751 to and fro ^H7751 through the streets ^H2351 of Jerusalem ^H3389,

And see ^H7200 now ^H4994 and know ^H3045,

And seek ^H1245 in her open ^H7339 squares ^H7339,

If ^H518 you can find ^H4672 a man ^H376,

If ^H518 there ^H3426 is ^H3426 one who does ^H6213 justice ^H4941, who seeks ^H1245 faithfulness ^H530,

Then I will pardon ^H5545 her.

2 “And if ^H518 they say ^H559, ‘As Yahweh ^H3068 lives ^H2416,’

Then ^H3651 they swear ^H7650 to a lie ^H8267.”

3 O Yahweh ^H3068, do not Your eyes ^H5869 look for faithfulness ^H530?

You have struck ^H5221 them,

But they did not [fn]weaken ^H2470;

You have consumed ^H3615 them,

But they refused ^H3985 to receive ^H3947 discipline ^H4148.

They have made ^H2388 their faces ^H6440 stronger ^H2388 than ^H4480 rock ^H5553;

They have refused ^H3985 to [fn]repent ^H7725.

4 Then I said ^H559, “They are only ^H389 the poor ^H1800;

They are ^H2973 foolish ^H2973;

For they do not know ^H3045 the way ^H1870 of Yahweh ^H3068

Or the legal judgment ^H4941 of their God ^H430.

5 “Let me go ^H1980 to the great ^H1419

And let me speak ^H1696 to them,

For they know ^H3045 the way ^H1870 of Yahweh ^H3068

And the legal judgment ^H4941 of their God ^H430.”

But they too, altogether ^H3162, have broken ^H7665 the yoke ^H5923

And torn ^H5423 apart the bonds ^H4147.

6 Therefore ^H5921 H3651 a lion ^H738 from the forest ^H3293 will strike ^H5221 them down ^H5221;

A wolf ^H2061 of the deserts ^H6160 will devastate ^H7703 them;

A leopard ^H5246 is watching ^H8245 their cities ^H5892.

Everyone ^H3605 who goes ^H3318 out of them will be torn ^H2963 in ^H2963 pieces ^H2963

Because ^H3588 their transgressions ^H6588 are ^H7231 many ^H7231;

Their acts ^H4878 of faithlessness ^H4878 are ^H6105 mighty ^H6105.

7 “Why ^H335 should I pardon ^H5545 you?

Your sons ^H1121 have forsaken ^H5800 Me

And sworn ^H7650 by those who are not gods ^H430.

I had satisfied ^H7646 them to ^H7646 the ^H7646 full ^H7646,

Then they committed ^H5003 adultery ^H5003

And trooped ^H1413 to the harlot’s ^H2181 house ^H1004.

8 “They were well-fed ^H2109 lusty ^H7904 horses ^H5483,

Each ^H376 one ^H376 neighing ^H6670 after ^H413 his neighbor’s ^H7453 wife ^H802.

9 “Shall I not punish ^H6485 [fn]these ^H428 people,” declares ^H5002 Yahweh ^H3068,

“And on a nation ^H1471 such ^H834 as this ^H2088

Shall I not avenge ^H5358 Myself ^H5315?

10 “Go ^H5927 up ^H5927 through her vine ^H8284 rows ^H8284 and make ^H7843 them a ruin ^H7843,

But do not make ^H6213 a complete ^H3617 destruction ^H3617;

Remove ^H5493 her branches ^H5189,

For they are not Yahweh’s ^H3068.

11 “For the house ^H1004 of Israel ^H3478 and the house ^H1004 of Judah ^H3063

Have dealt ^H898 very ^H898 treacherously ^H898 with Me,” declares ^H5002 Yahweh ^H3068.

12 They have dealt ^H3584 falsely ^H3584 about Yahweh ^H3068

And said ^H559, “[fn]Not He;

Calamity ^H7451 will not come ^H935 on us,

And we will not see ^H7200 sword ^H2719 or famine ^H7458.

13 “The prophets ^H5030 are as wind ^H7307,

And the word ^H1699 is not in them.

Thus ^H3541 it will be done ^H6213 to them!”

A Stubborn and Rebellious People

14 Therefore ^H3651, thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Yahweh ^H3068, the God ^H430 of hosts ^H6635,

“Because ^H3282 you have spoken ^H1696 this ^H2088 word ^H1697,

Behold ^H2009, I am making ^H5414 My words ^H1697 in your mouth ^H6310 fire ^H784

And this ^H2088 people ^H5971 wood ^H6086, and it will devour ^H398 them.

15 “Behold ^H2009, I am bringing ^H935 a nation ^H1471 against ^H5921 you from afar ^H4801, O house ^H1004 of Israel ^H3478,” declares ^H5002 Yahweh ^H3068.

“It is an enduring ^H386 nation ^H1471;

It is an ancient ^H5769 nation ^H1471,

A nation ^H1471 whose tongue ^H3956 you do not know ^H3045,

Nor ^H3808 can you [fn]understand ^H8085 what ^H4100 they say ^H1696.

16 “Their quiver ^H827 is like an open ^H6605 grave ^H6913;

All ^H3605 of them are mighty ^H1368 men ^H1368.

17 “They will devour ^H398 your harvest ^H7105 and your food ^H3899;

They will devour ^H398 your sons ^H1121 and your daughters ^H1323;

They will devour ^H398 your flocks ^H6629 and your herds ^H1241;

They will devour ^H398 your vines ^H1612 and your fig ^H8384 trees ^H8384;

They will demolish ^H7567 with the sword ^H2719 your fortified ^H4013 cities ^H5892 in which ^H834 you trust ^H982.

18 “Yet even ^H1571 in those ^H1992 days ^H3117,” declares ^H5002 Yahweh ^H3068, “I will not make ^H6213 you a complete ^H3617 destruction ^H3617.

19 It shall come ^H1961 about ^H1961 when ^H3588 [fn]they say ^H559, ‘Why ^H8478 H4100 has Yahweh ^H3068 our God ^H430 done ^H6213 all ^H3605 these ^H428 things ^H428 to us?’ then you shall say ^H559 to them, ‘As you have forsaken ^H5800 Me and served ^H5647 foreign ^H5236 gods ^H430 in your land ^H776, so ^H3651 you will serve ^H5647 strangers ^H2114 in a land ^H776 that is not yours.’

20 “Declare ^H5046 this ^H2088 in the house ^H1004 of Jacob ^H3290

And cause ^H8085 it to ^H8085 be ^H8085 heard ^H8085 in Judah ^H3063, saying ^H559,

21 ‘Now ^H4994 hear ^H8085 this ^H2088, O people ^H5971 who are simpleminded ^H5530 fools ^H5530 and without ^H369 a heart ^H3820 of wisdom,

Who have eyes ^H5869 but do not see ^H7200,

Who have ears ^H241 but do not hear ^H8085.

22 ‘Do you not fear ^H3372 Me?’ declares ^H5002 Yahweh ^H3068.

‘Do you not tremble ^H2342 in My presence ^H6440?

For I have placed ^H7760 the sand ^H2344 as a boundary ^H1366 for the sea ^H3220,

A perpetual ^H5769 statute ^H2706, so it cannot ^H3808 cross ^H5674 over ^H5674 it.

Though the waves ^H1530 toss ^H1607, yet they cannot ^H3808 prevail ^H3201;

Though they roar ^H1993, yet they cannot ^H3808 cross ^H5674 over ^H5674 it.

23 ‘But this ^H2088 people ^H5971 has ^H1961 a stubborn ^H5637 and rebellious ^H4784 heart ^H3820;

They have turned ^H5493 aside ^H5493 and gone ^H1980 away.

24 ‘They do not say ^H559 in their heart ^H3824,

“Let us now ^H4994 fear ^H3372 Yahweh ^H3068 our God ^H430,

Who gives ^H5414 rain ^H1653 in its season ^H6256,

Both the [fn]early ^H3138 rain ^H3138 and the [fn]late ^H4456 rain ^H4456,

Who keeps ^H8104 for us

The appointed ^H2708 weeks ^H7620 of the harvest ^H7105.”

25 ‘Your iniquities ^H5771 have turned ^H5186 these ^H428 away ^H5186,

And your sins ^H2403 have withheld ^H4513 good ^H2896 from you.

26 ‘For wicked ^H7563 men ^H7563 are found ^H4672 among My people ^H5971;

They watch ^H7789 like fowlers ^H3353 [fn]lying ^H7918 in ^H7918 wait ^H7918;

They set ^H5324 a [fn]trap ^H4889;

They catch ^H3920 men ^H376.

27 ‘Like a cage ^H3619 full ^H4392 of birds ^H5775,

So ^H3651 their houses ^H1004 are full ^H4392 of deceit ^H4820;

Therefore ^H5921 H3651 they have become ^H1431 great ^H1431 and rich ^H6238.

28 ‘They are ^H8080 fat ^H8080, they are sleek ^H6245;

They also ^H1571 [fn]excel ^H5674 in deeds ^H1697 of evil ^H7451;

They do not plead ^H1777 the cause ^H1779,

The cause ^H1779 of the [fn]orphan ^H3490, that they may succeed ^H6743;

And they do not [fn]render ^H8199 justice ^H4941 for the poor ^H34.

29 ‘Shall I not punish ^H6485 [fn]these ^H428 people?’ declares ^H5002 Yahweh ^H3068,

‘On a nation ^H1471 such ^H834 as this ^H2088

Shall I not avenge ^H5358 Myself ^H5315?’

30 “A horrible ^H8047 and appalling ^H8186 thing ^H8186

Has happened ^H1961 in the land ^H776:

31 The prophets ^H5030 prophesy ^H5012 with lying ^H8267,

And the priests ^H3548 have dominion ^H7287 [fn]by their own hand ^H3027;

And My people ^H5971 love ^H157 it so ^H3651!

But what ^H4100 will you do ^H6213 at the end ^H319 of it?
