The Faithlessness of Jerusalem

1 “At that time ^H6256,” declares ^H5002 Yahweh ^H3068, “they will bring ^H3318 out ^H3318 the bones ^H6106 of the kings ^H4428 of Judah ^H3063 and the bones ^H6106 of its princes ^H8269, and the bones ^H6106 of the priests ^H3548 and the bones ^H6106 of the prophets ^H5030, and the bones ^H6106 of the inhabitants ^H3427 of Jerusalem ^H3389 from their graves ^H6913.

2 And they will spread ^H7849 them out ^H7849 to the sun ^H8121, the moon ^H3394, and to all ^H3605 the host ^H6635 of heaven ^H8064, which ^H834 they have loved ^H157 and which ^H834 they have served ^H5647, and which ^H834 they have walked ^H1980 after ^H310 and which ^H834 they have sought ^H1875, and which ^H834 they have worshiped ^H2331. They will not be gathered ^H622 or buried ^H6912; they will be as dung ^H1828 on the face ^H6440 of the ground ^H127. 3 And death ^H4194 will be chosen ^H977 rather ^H4480 than ^H4480 life ^H2416 by all ^H3605 the remnant ^H7611 that remains ^H7604 of this ^H2088 evil ^H7451 family ^H4940, that remains ^H7604 in all ^H3605 the places ^H4725 to which ^H834 I have banished ^H5080 them,” declares ^H5002 Yahweh ^H3068 of hosts ^H6635.

4 “You shall say ^H559 to them, ‘Thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Yahweh ^H3068,

“Do men fall ^H5307 and not get ^H6965 up ^H6965 again?

Does one turn ^H7725 away ^H7725 and not [fn]turn ^H7725 back ^H7725?

5 “Why ^H4069 then has this ^H2088 people ^H5971, Jerusalem ^H3389,

[fn]Turned ^H7725 away ^H7725 in continual ^H5329 faithlessness ^H4878?

They hold ^H2388 fast ^H2388 to deceit ^H8649;

They refuse ^H3985 to return ^H7725.

6 “I have given ^H7181 heed ^H7181 and heard ^H8085,

They have spoken ^H1696 what ^H3651 is ^H3651 not right ^H3651;

No ^H369 man ^H376 regretted ^H5162 his evil ^H7451,

Saying ^H559, ‘What ^H4100 have I done ^H6213?’

Everyone ^H3605 turned ^H7725 to his course ^H4794,

Like a horse ^H5483 charging ^H7857 into the battle ^H4421.

7 “Even ^H1571 the stork ^H2624 in the sky ^H8064

Knows ^H3045 her seasons ^H4150;

And the turtledove ^H8449 and the swift ^H5483 and the crane ^H5693

Keep ^H8104 the time ^H6256 of their [fn]migration ^H935;

But My people ^H5971 do not know ^H3045

The legal judgment ^H4941 of Yahweh ^H3068.

8 “How ^H351 can you say ^H559, ‘We are wise ^H2450,

And the law ^H8451 of Yahweh ^H3068 is with us’?

But behold ^H2009, the lying ^H8267 pen ^H5842 of the scribes ^H5608

Has made ^H6213 it into a lie ^H8267.

9 “The wise ^H2450 men ^H2450 are put ^H954 to ^H954 shame ^H954;

They are dismayed ^H2865 and captured ^H3920;

Behold ^H2009, they have rejected ^H3988 the word ^H1697 of Yahweh ^H3068,

And what ^H4100 kind of wisdom ^H2451 do they have?

10 “Therefore ^H3651 I will give ^H5414 their wives ^H802 to others ^H312,

Their fields ^H7704 to [fn]new ^H3423 possessors ^H3423,

Because ^H3588 from the least ^H6996 even to the greatest ^H1419

Everyone ^H3605 is greedy ^H1214 for gain ^H1215;

From the prophet ^H5030 even to the priest ^H3548

Everyone ^H3605 practices ^H6213 lying ^H8267.

11 “They heal ^H7495 the brokenness ^H7667 of the daughter ^H1323 of My people ^H5971 superficially ^H5921 H7043,

Saying ^H559, ‘Peace ^H7965, peace ^H7965,’

But there ^H369 is ^H369 no ^H369 peace ^H7965.

12 “Were ^H954 they ashamed ^H954 because ^H3588 of the abomination ^H8441 they had done ^H6213?

They certainly ^H1571 were ^H954 not ashamed ^H954,

And they did not know ^H3045 how to feel ^H3637 dishonor ^H3637;

Therefore ^H3651 they shall fall ^H5307 among those who fall ^H5307;

At the time ^H6256 of their [fn]punishment ^H6486 they shall be brought ^H3782 down ^H3782,”

Says ^H559 Yahweh ^H3068.

13 “I will surely ^H5486 gather ^H5486 them up ^H5486,” declares ^H5002 Yahweh ^H3068;

“There ^H369 will ^H369 be ^H369 no ^H369 grapes ^H6025 on the vine ^H1612

And no ^H369 figs ^H8384 on the fig ^H8384 tree ^H8384,

And the leaf ^H5929 will wither ^H5034;

And what I have given ^H5414 them will pass ^H5674 away ^H5674.”’”

14 Why ^H5921 H4100 are we sitting ^H3427 still ^H3427?

Gather ^H622 yourselves, and let us go ^H935 into the fortified ^H4013 cities ^H5892

And let us be silent ^H1826 there ^H8033

Because ^H3588 Yahweh ^H3068 our God ^H430 has silenced ^H1826 us

And given ^H8248 us [fn]poisoned ^H7219 water ^H4325 to ^H8248 drink ^H8248,

For we have sinned ^H2398 against Yahweh ^H3068.

15 We waited ^H6960 for peace ^H7965, but there ^H369 was ^H369 no ^H369 good ^H2896;

For a time ^H6256 of healing ^H4832, but behold ^H2009, terror ^H1205!

16 From Dan ^H1835 is heard ^H8085 the snorting ^H5170 of his horses ^H5483;

At the sound ^H6963 of the neighing ^H4684 of his valiant ^H47 steeds ^H47

The whole ^H3605 land ^H776 quakes ^H7493;

And they come ^H935 and devour ^H398 the land ^H776 as well as its fullness ^H4393,

The city ^H5892 and its inhabitants ^H3427.

17 “For behold ^H2009, I am sending ^H7971 serpents ^H5175 against you,

Vipers ^H6848, for which ^H834 there ^H369 is ^H369 no ^H369 charm ^H3908,

And they will bite ^H5391 you,” declares ^H5002 Yahweh ^H3068.

Sorrow over Zion

18 [fn]My sorrow ^H3015 is beyond healing ^H4010;

My heart ^H3820 is faint ^H1742 within me!

19 Behold ^H2009, the sound ^H6963! The cry ^H7775 of the daughter ^H1323 of my people ^H5971 from a distant ^H4801 land ^H776:

“Is Yahweh ^H3068 not in Zion ^H6726? Is her King ^H4428 not within her?”

“Why ^H4069 have they provoked ^H3707 Me to anger ^H3707 with their graven ^H6456 images ^H6456, with foreign ^H5236 [fn]idols ^H1892?”

20 “Harvest ^H7105 is ^H5674 past ^H5674, summer ^H7019 is ended ^H3615,

And we are not saved ^H3467.”

21 For the brokenness ^H7667 of the daughter ^H1323 of my people ^H5971 I am broken ^H7665;

I mourn ^H6937, desolation ^H8047 has taken ^H2388 hold ^H2388 of me.

22 Is ^H369 there ^H369 no ^H369 balm ^H6875 in Gilead ^H1568?

Is ^H369 there ^H369 no ^H369 physician ^H7495 there ^H8033?

Why ^H4069 then ^H3588 has not the [fn]health ^H724 of the daughter ^H1323 of my people ^H5971 gone ^H5927 up ^H5927?
