Ninevites Turn from Their Evil Ways
1 Now the word H1697 of Yahweh H3068 came H1961 to Jonah H3124 the second H8145 time H8145, saying H559,
2 “Arise H6965, go H1980 to Nineveh H5210, the great H1419 city H5892, and call H7121 out H7121 to it this very call H7150 which H834 I am going to speak H1696 to you.” 3 So Jonah H3124 arose H6965 and went H1980 to Nineveh H5210 according to the word H1697 of Yahweh H3068. Now Nineveh H5210 was [fn]an exceedingly H430 great H1419 city H5892, a three H7969 days’ H3117 walk H4109. 4 Then Jonah H3124 began H2490 to go H935 into the city H5892, one H259 day’s H3117 walk H4109; and he called H7121 out H7121 and said H559, “Yet H5750 forty H705 days H3117 and Nineveh H5210 will be overthrown H2015.”
5 And the [fn]people H376 of Nineveh H5210 believed H539 in God H430; and they called H7121 a fast H6685 and put H3847 on H3847 sackcloth H8242, from the greatest H1419 to the least H6996 of them. 6 Then the word H1697 reached H5060 the king H4428 of Nineveh H5210, and he arose H6965 from his throne H3678, laid H5674 aside H5674 his mantle H155 from him, covered H3680 himself with sackcloth H8242, and sat H3427 on the [fn]ashes H665. 7 And he cried H2199 out H2199 and said H559,
“In Nineveh H5210 by the [fn]decree H2940 of the king H4428 and his nobles H1419[fn]: Do not let man H120, [fn]animal H929, herd H1241, or flock H6629 taste H2938 a thing H3972. Do not let them eat H7462, and do not let them drink H8354 water H4325.
8 But both man H120 and [fn]animal H929 must be covered H3680 with sackcloth H8242; and let [fn]men call H7121 on God H430 with their strength H2394 that each H376 may turn H7725 from his evil H7451 way H1870 and from the violence H2555 which H834 is in [fn]his hands H3709.
9 Who H4310 knows H3045, God H430 may turn H7725 and relent H5162 and turn H7725 away from His burning H2740 anger H639 so that we will not perish H6.”
10 Then God H430 saw H7200 their works H4639, that they turned H7725 from their evil H7451 way H1870, so God H430 [fn]relented H5162 concerning H5921 the evil H7451 which H834 He had spoken H1696 He would [fn]bring H6213 upon them. And He did not [fn]bring H6213 it upon them.
