Israel Struck Down at Ai

1 But the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 acted ^H4603 unfaithfully ^H4603 H4604 in regard to the things ^H2764 devoted ^H2764 to destruction ^H2764. Achan ^H5912, the son ^H1121 of Carmi ^H3756, the son ^H1121 of Zabdi ^H2067, the son ^H1121 of Zerah ^H2226, from the tribe ^H4294 of Judah ^H3063, took ^H3947 some ^H4480 of the devoted ^H2764 things ^H2764; therefore the anger ^H639 of Yahweh ^H3068 burned ^H2734 against the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478.

2 Now Joshua ^H3091 sent ^H7971 men ^H376 from Jericho ^H3405 to Ai ^H5857, which ^H834 is near ^H5973 Beth-aven ^H1007, east ^H6924 of Bethel ^H1008, and said ^H559 to them, “[fn]Go ^H5927 up ^H5927 and spy ^H7270 out ^H7270 the land ^H776.” So the men ^H376 went ^H5927 up ^H5927 and spied ^H7270 out ^H7270 Ai ^H5857.

3 Then they returned ^H7725 to Joshua ^H3091 and said ^H559 to him, “Do not have all ^H3605 the people ^H5971 go ^H5927 up ^H5927; only about two or ^H176 three ^H7969 thousand ^H505 men ^H376 need go ^H5927 up ^H5927 to strike ^H5221 down ^H5221 Ai ^H5857; do not have all ^H3605 the people ^H5971 toil ^H3021 up there ^H8033, for they are few ^H4592.” 4 So about three ^H7969 thousand ^H505 men ^H376 from the people ^H5971 went ^H5927 up ^H5927 there ^H8033, but they fled ^H5127 [fn]from the men ^H376 of Ai ^H5857. 5 And the men ^H376 of Ai ^H5857 struck ^H5221 down ^H5221 about thirty-six ^H7970 H8337 of their men ^H376 and pursued ^H7291 them [fn]from the gate ^H8179 as far ^H5704 as Shebarim ^H7671 and struck ^H5221 them down ^H5221 on the descent ^H4174, so the hearts ^H3824 of the people ^H5971 melted ^H4549 and became ^H1961 as water ^H4325.

10 So Yahweh ^H3068 said ^H559 to Joshua ^H3091, “Rise ^H6965 up ^H6965! Why ^H4100 is it that you have fallen ^H5307 on your face ^H6440? 11 Israel ^H3478 has sinned ^H2398, and they have also ^H1571 trespassed ^H5674 against My covenant ^H1285 which ^H834 I commanded ^H6680 them. And they have even ^H1571 taken ^H3947 some ^H4480 of the things ^H2764 devoted ^H2764 to destruction ^H2764 and have both ^H1571 stolen ^H1589 and dealt ^H3584 falsely ^H3584. Moreover, they have also ^H1571 put ^H7760 them among their own things ^H3627. 12 Therefore the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 cannot ^H3201 H3808 rise ^H6965 before ^H6440 their enemies ^H340; they turn ^H6437 their [fn]backs ^H6203 before ^H6440 their enemies ^H340, for they have become ^H1961 devoted ^H2764 to destruction ^H2764. I will not be with you anymore ^H3254 unless ^H518 H3808 you destroy ^H8045 the things ^H2764 devoted ^H2764 to destruction ^H2764 from your midst ^H7130. 13 Rise ^H6965 up ^H6965! And it will be ^H1961 that the tribe ^H7626 which ^H834 Yahweh ^H3068 takes ^H3920 by lot shall come ^H7126 near ^H7126 by families ^H4940, and the family ^H4940 which ^H834 Yahweh ^H3068 takes ^H3920 shall come ^H7126 near ^H7126 by households ^H1004, and the household ^H1004 which ^H834 Yahweh ^H3068 takes ^H3920 shall come ^H7126 near ^H7126 man ^H1397 by man ^H1397. 15 And it will be ^H1961 that the one who is taken ^H3920 with the things ^H2764 devoted ^H2764 to destruction ^H2764 shall be burned ^H8313 with fire ^H784, he and all ^H3605 that belongs to him, because ^H3588 he has trespassed ^H5674 against the covenant ^H1285 of Yahweh ^H3068, and because ^H3588 he has committed ^H6213 a disgraceful ^H5039 thing ^H5039 in Israel ^H3478.’”

The Sin of Achan

16 So Joshua ^H3091 arose ^H7925 early ^H7925 in the morning ^H1242 and brought ^H7126 Israel ^H3478 near ^H7126 by [fn]tribes ^H7626, and the tribe ^H7626 of Judah ^H3063 was taken ^H3920.

17 And he brought ^H7126 the family ^H4940 of Judah ^H3063 near ^H7126, and he took ^H3920 the family ^H4940 of the Zerahites ^H2227; and he brought ^H7126 the family ^H4940 of the Zerahites ^H2227 near ^H7126 man ^H1397 by man ^H1397, and Zabdi ^H2067 was taken ^H3920. 18 And he brought ^H7126 his household ^H1004 near ^H7126 man ^H1397 by man ^H1397; and Achan ^H5912, son ^H1121 of Carmi ^H3756, son ^H1121 of Zabdi ^H2067, son ^H1121 of Zerah ^H2226, from the tribe ^H4294 of Judah ^H3063, was taken ^H3920. 19 Then Joshua ^H3091 said ^H559 to Achan ^H5912, “My son ^H1121, I implore ^H4994 you, give ^H7760 glory ^H3519 to Yahweh ^H3068, the God ^H430 of Israel ^H3478, and give ^H5414 praise ^H8426 to Him; and declare ^H5046 to me now ^H4994 what ^H4100 you have done ^H6213. Do not hide ^H3582 it from me.” 20 So Achan ^H5912 answered ^H6030 Joshua ^H3091 and said ^H559, “Truly ^H546, I have sinned ^H2398 against Yahweh ^H3068, the God ^H430 of Israel ^H3478, and [fn]this ^H2088 is what ^H2088 I did ^H6213: 21 I saw ^H7200 among the spoil ^H7998 a beautiful ^H2896 mantle ^H155 from Shinar ^H8152 and two hundred ^H3967 [fn]shekels ^H8255 of silver ^H3701 and a bar ^H3956 of gold ^H2091 fifty ^H2572 shekels ^H8255 in weight ^H4948; then I [fn]coveted ^H2530 them and took ^H3947 them; and behold ^H2009, they are concealed ^H2934 in the earth ^H776 inside ^H8432 my tent ^H168 with the silver ^H3701 underneath ^H8478 it.”

22 So Joshua ^H3091 sent ^H7971 messengers ^H4397, and they ran ^H7323 to the tent ^H168; and behold ^H2009, it was concealed ^H2934 in his tent ^H168 with the silver ^H3701 underneath ^H8478 it. 23 And they took ^H3947 them from inside ^H8432 the tent ^H168 and brought ^H935 them to Joshua ^H3091 and to all ^H3605 the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478, and they poured ^H3332 them out ^H3332 before ^H6440 Yahweh ^H3068. 24 Then Joshua ^H3091 and all ^H3605 Israel ^H3478 with him, took ^H3947 Achan ^H5912 the son ^H1121 of Zerah ^H2226, the silver ^H3701, the mantle ^H155, the bar ^H3956 of gold ^H2091, his sons ^H1121, his daughters ^H1323, his [fn]oxen ^H7794, his donkeys ^H2543, his sheep ^H6629, his tent ^H168, and all ^H3605 that belonged to him; and they brought ^H5927 them up ^H5927 to the valley ^H6010 of [fn]Achor ^H5911. 25 And Joshua ^H3091 said ^H559, “Why ^H4100 have you troubled ^H5916 us? Yahweh ^H3068 will trouble ^H5916 you this ^H2088 day ^H3117.” And all ^H3605 Israel ^H3478 stoned ^H7275 him with stones ^H68; and they burned ^H8313 them with fire ^H784 [fn]after they had stoned ^H5619 them with stones ^H68. 26 Then they raised ^H6965 over ^H5921 him a great ^H1419 heap ^H1530 of stones ^H68 that stands to this ^H2088 day ^H3117, and Yahweh ^H3068 turned ^H7725 from His burning ^H2740 anger ^H639. Therefore ^H5921 H3651 the name ^H8034 of that place ^H4725 has been called ^H7121 the valley ^H6010 of [fn]Achor ^H5911 to this ^H2088 day ^H3117.
