The Sabbatical Year

1 Yahweh ^H3068 then spoke ^H1696 to Moses ^H4872 [fn]at Mount ^H2022 Sinai ^H5514, saying ^H559,

2 “Speak ^H1696 to the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 and say ^H559 to them, ‘When ^H3588 you come ^H935 into the land ^H776 which ^H834 I am giving ^H5414 to you, then the land ^H776 shall have ^H7673 a sabbath ^H7676 to Yahweh ^H3068. 3 Six ^H8337 years ^H8141 you shall sow ^H2232 your field ^H7704, and six ^H8337 years ^H8141 you shall prune ^H2168 your vineyard ^H3754 and gather ^H622 in ^H622 its produce ^H8393, 4 but during the seventh ^H7637 year ^H8141 the land ^H776 shall have ^H1961 a sabbath ^H7676 rest ^H7677, a sabbath ^H7676 to Yahweh ^H3068; you shall not sow ^H2232 your field ^H7704 nor ^H3808 prune ^H2168 your vineyard ^H3754. 5 [fn]What ^H5599 grows ^H5599 of ^H5599 its ^H5599 own ^H5599 accord ^H5599 from your harvest ^H7105 you shall not reap ^H7114, and your grapes ^H6025 of untrimmed ^H5139 vines ^H5139 you shall not gather ^H1219; the land ^H776 shall have ^H1961 a sabbatical ^H7677 year ^H8141. 6 And the sabbath ^H7676 produce of the land ^H776 shall be ^H1961 for food ^H402; for you and your male ^H5650 and female ^H519 slaves ^H519 and your hired ^H7916 man ^H7916 and your foreign ^H8453 resident ^H8453, those who sojourn ^H1481 with you. 7 Even your cattle ^H929 and the beasts ^H2416 that are in your land ^H776 shall have ^H1961 all ^H3605 its produce ^H8393 to eat ^H398.

The Year of Jubilee

8 ‘You are also to count ^H5608 off seven ^H7651 sabbaths ^H7676 of years ^H8141 for yourself, seven ^H7651 times ^H6471 seven ^H7651 years ^H8141, so that you have ^H1961 the time ^H3117 of the seven ^H7651 sabbaths ^H7676 of years ^H8141, namely, forty-nine ^H705 H8672 years ^H8141.

9 You shall then sound ^H5674 a ram’s ^H7782 horn ^H7782 abroad on the tenth ^H6218 day of the seventh ^H7637 month ^H2320; on the day ^H3117 of atonement ^H3725 you shall sound ^H5674 a horn ^H7782 all ^H3605 through your land ^H776. 10 You shall thus set ^H6942 apart ^H6942 as ^H6942 holy ^H6942 the fiftieth ^H2572 year ^H8141 and proclaim ^H7121 [fn]a release ^H1865 through the land ^H776 to all ^H3605 its inhabitants ^H3427. It shall be a jubilee ^H3104 for you, [fn]and each ^H376 of you shall return ^H7725 to his own possession ^H272 of land, [fn]and each ^H376 of you shall return ^H7725 to his family ^H4940. 11 You shall have ^H1961 the fiftieth ^H2572 year ^H8141 as a jubilee ^H3104; you shall not sow ^H2232; you shall not ^H3808 reap ^H7114 what grows ^H5599 of ^H5599 its ^H5599 own ^H5599 accord ^H5599; you shall not ^H3808 gather ^H1219 in from its untrimmed ^H5139 vines ^H5139. 12 For it is a jubilee ^H3104; it shall be holy ^H6944 to you. You shall eat ^H398 its produce ^H8393 out of the field ^H7704.

13 ‘On this ^H2088 year ^H8141 of jubilee ^H3104, each ^H376 of you shall return ^H7725 to his own possession ^H272 of land. 14 If ^H3588 you make ^H4376 a sale ^H4465, moreover, to your companion ^H5997 or ^H176 buy ^H7069 from your friend’s ^H5997 hand ^H3027, you shall not mistreat ^H3238 one ^H376 another ^H251. 15 Corresponding to the number ^H4557 of years ^H8141 after ^H310 the jubilee ^H3104, you shall buy ^H7069 from your [fn]companion ^H5997; he is to sell ^H4376 to you according to the number ^H4557 of years ^H8141 of produce ^H8393. 16 In proportion ^H6310 to the [fn]extent ^H7230 of the years ^H8141 you shall increase ^H7235 its price ^H4736, and in proportion ^H6310 to the fewness ^H4591 of the years ^H8141 you shall diminish ^H4591 its price ^H4736, for it is the number ^H4557 of crops it produces ^H8393 that he is selling ^H4376 to you. 17 So you shall not mistreat ^H3238 one ^H376 another ^H5997, but you shall [fn]fear ^H3372 your God ^H430; for I am Yahweh ^H3068 your God ^H430.

18 ‘You shall thus observe ^H6213 My statutes ^H2708 and keep ^H8104 My judgments ^H4941, so as to do ^H6213 them, that you may live ^H3427 securely ^H983 on the land ^H776. 19 Then the land ^H776 will yield ^H5414 its fruit ^H6529, so that you can eat ^H398 your fill ^H7648 and live ^H3427 securely ^H983 on it. 20 But if ^H3588 you say ^H559, “What ^H4100 are we going to eat ^H398 on the seventh ^H7637 year ^H8141 [fn]if ^H2005 we do not sow ^H2232 or gather ^H622 in ^H622 our produce ^H8393?” 21 then I will command ^H6680 My blessing ^H1293 for you in the sixth ^H8345 year ^H8141 that it will bring ^H6213 forth ^H6213 the produce ^H8393 for three ^H7969 years ^H8141. 22 So you shall sow ^H2232 the eighth ^H8066 year ^H8141 and eat ^H398 old ^H3465 things ^H3465 from that produce ^H8393, eating ^H398 the old until ^H5704 the ninth ^H8671 year ^H8141 when ^H5704 its produce ^H8393 comes ^H935 in ^H935.

The Redemption of Land

23 ‘The land ^H776, moreover, shall not be sold ^H4376 permanently ^H6783, for the land ^H776 is Mine; for you are but sojourners ^H1616 and foreign ^H8453 residents ^H8453 with Me.

24 Thus for every ^H3605 [fn]piece ^H776 of land of your possession ^H272, you shall provide ^H5414 for the redemption ^H1353 of the land ^H776.

25 ‘If ^H3588 a brother ^H251 of yours becomes ^H4134 so poor ^H4134 he has to sell ^H4376 part of his possession ^H272 of land, then his nearest ^H7138 kinsman ^H1350 redeemer ^H1350 is to come ^H935 and redeem ^H1350 what ^H4465 his brother ^H251 has sold ^H4465. 26 Or in ^H3588 case ^H3588 a man ^H376 has ^H1961 no ^H3808 kinsman ^H1350 redeemer ^H1350, but [fn]recovers ^H3027 H5381 his means ^H1767 and finds ^H4672 sufficient ^H1767 payment for its redemption ^H1353, 27 then he shall calculate ^H2803 the years ^H8141 since its sale ^H4465 and return ^H7725 the balance ^H5736 to the man ^H376 to whom ^H834 he sold ^H4376 it, and so return ^H7725 to his possession ^H272 of land. 28 But if ^H518 [fn]he has not found ^H4672 sufficient ^H1767 means ^H3027 to return ^H7725 it to himself, then what ^H4465 he has sold ^H4465 shall remain ^H1961 in the hands ^H3027 of its purchaser ^H7069 until ^H5704 the year ^H8141 of jubilee ^H3104; but at the jubilee ^H3104 it shall [fn]revert ^H3318, that he may return ^H7725 to his possession ^H272 of land.

29 ‘Likewise, if ^H3588 a man ^H376 sells ^H4376 a house ^H1004 for habitation ^H4186 in a walled ^H2346 city ^H5892, then his redemption ^H1353 right ^H1353 remains ^H1961 valid until ^H5704 a full ^H8552 year ^H8141 from its sale ^H4465; his right ^H1353 of ^H1353 redemption ^H1353 lasts ^H1961 a full ^H3117 year ^H3117. 30 But if ^H518 it is not redeemed ^H1350 for him within ^H5704 the space ^H4390 of a full ^H8549 year ^H8141, then the house ^H1004 that is in the walled ^H2346 city ^H5892 passes ^H6965 permanently ^H6783 to its purchaser ^H7069 throughout his generations ^H1755; it does not [fn]revert ^H3318 in the jubilee ^H3104. 31 The houses ^H1004 of the villages ^H2691, however, which ^H834 have ^H369 no ^H369 surrounding ^H5439 wall ^H2346, shall be considered ^H2803 [fn]as open ^H776 fields ^H7704; they have ^H1961 redemption ^H1353 rights ^H1353 and [fn]revert ^H3318 in the jubilee ^H3104. 32 As for cities ^H5892 of the Levites ^H3881, the Levites ^H3881 have ^H1961 a permanent ^H5769 right ^H1353 of ^H1353 redemption ^H1353 for the houses ^H1004 of the cities ^H5892 which are their possession ^H272. 33 What ^H834, therefore, [fn]belongs ^H4480 to the Levites ^H3881 may be redeemed ^H1350, and a house ^H1004 sale ^H4465 [fn]in the city ^H5892 of [fn]their possession ^H272 [fn]reverts ^H3318 in the jubilee ^H3104, for the houses ^H1004 of the cities ^H5892 of the Levites ^H3881 are their possession ^H272 among ^H8432 the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478. 34 But pasture ^H4054 fields ^H7704 of their cities ^H5892 shall not be sold ^H4376, for that is their perpetual ^H5769 possession ^H272.

Redemption Rights for Poor Brothers

35 ‘Now if ^H3588 a brother ^H251 of yours becomes ^H4134 poor ^H4134 and his [fn]means ^H3027 with ^H5973 regard ^H5973 to ^H5973 you falter ^H4131, then you are to sustain ^H2388 him, like a sojourner ^H1616 or a foreign ^H8453 resident ^H8453, that he may live ^H2421 with you.

36 Do not take ^H3947 [fn]usurious ^H8636 interest ^H5392 from him, but fear ^H3372 your God ^H430, that your brother ^H251 may live ^H2421 with you. 37 You shall not give ^H5414 him your silver ^H3701 at interest ^H5392 nor ^H3808 your food ^H400 for gain ^H4768. 38 I am Yahweh ^H3068 your God ^H430, who ^H834 brought ^H3318 you out ^H3318 of the land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714 to give ^H5414 you the land ^H776 of Canaan ^H3667 and to be your God ^H430.

39 ‘If ^H3588 a brother ^H251 of yours becomes ^H4134 so poor ^H4134 with ^H5973 regard ^H5973 to ^H5973 you that he sells ^H4376 himself to you, you shall not subject ^H5647 him to a slave’s ^H5650 service ^H5656. 40 He shall be with you as a hired ^H7916 man ^H7916, as if he were a foreign ^H8453 resident ^H8453; he shall serve ^H5647 with you until ^H5704 the year ^H8141 of jubilee ^H3104. 41 He shall then go ^H3318 out ^H3318 from you, he and his sons ^H1121 with him, and shall return ^H7725 to his family ^H4940, that he may return ^H7725 to the possession ^H272 of the land of his fathers ^H1. 42 For they are My slaves ^H5650 whom ^H834 I brought ^H3318 out ^H3318 from the land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714; they shall not be sold ^H4376 in a slave ^H5650 sale ^H4466. 43 You shall not have ^H7287 dominion ^H7287 over him with brutality ^H6531, but you shall fear ^H3372 your God ^H430. 44 As for your male ^H5650 and female ^H519 slaves ^H519 H5650 whom ^H834 you may have ^H1961—you may acquire ^H7069 male ^H5650 and female ^H519 slaves ^H519 H5650 from the nations ^H1471 that are around ^H5439 you. 45 And also ^H1571 you may acquire ^H7069 from the sons ^H1121 of the foreign ^H8453 residents ^H8453 who sojourn ^H1481 among ^H5973 you, from them and their families ^H4940 who ^H834 are with you; as for those whom ^H834 they have begotten ^H3205 in your land ^H776, they also may become ^H1961 your possession ^H272. 46 You may even give ^H5157 them as ^H5157 an ^H5157 inheritance ^H5157 to your sons ^H1121 after ^H310 you, to receive ^H3423 as a possession ^H272; you can use ^H5647 them as ^H5647 permanent ^H5769 slaves ^H5647. But in respect to your brothers ^H251, the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478, you shall not have ^H7287 dominion ^H7287 over one ^H376 another ^H251 with brutality ^H6531.

Kindness Toward a Poor Sojourner

47 ‘Now if ^H3588 the [fn]means ^H3027 of a sojourner ^H1616 or of a foreign ^H8453 resident ^H8453 with you becomes ^H5381 sufficient ^H5381, and a brother ^H251 of yours becomes ^H4134 so poor ^H4134 with ^H5973 regard ^H5973 to ^H5973 him as to sell ^H4376 himself to a sojourner ^H1616 who resides ^H8453 with you or ^H176 to the descendants ^H6133 of a sojourner’s ^H1616 family ^H4940,

48 then he shall have ^H1961 redemption ^H1353 right ^H1353 after ^H310 he has been sold ^H4376. One ^H259 of his brothers ^H251 may redeem ^H1350 him, 49 or ^H176 his uncle ^H1730 or ^H176 his uncle’s ^H1730 son ^H1121 may redeem ^H1350 him, or ^H176 one of his blood ^H7607 relatives ^H7607 from his family ^H4940 may redeem ^H1350 him; or ^H176 [fn]if he prospers ^H5381, he may redeem ^H1350 himself. 50 He then with his purchaser ^H7069 shall calculate ^H2803 from the year ^H8141 when he sold ^H4376 himself to him up to the year ^H8141 of jubilee ^H3104; and the price ^H3701 of his sale ^H4465 shall correspond ^H1961 to the number ^H4557 of years ^H8141. It is like the days ^H3117 of a hired ^H7916 man ^H7916 that he shall be with him. 51 If ^H518 there are still ^H5750 many ^H7227 years ^H8141, he shall return ^H7725 part of his purchase ^H4736 price ^H3701 in proportion ^H6310 to them for his own redemption ^H1353; 52 and if ^H518 few ^H4592 years ^H8141 remain ^H7604 until ^H5704 the year ^H8141 of jubilee ^H3104, he shall so calculate ^H2803 with him. In proportion ^H6310 to his years ^H8141 he shall return ^H7725 the amount for his redemption ^H1353. 53 Like a man ^H7916 hired ^H7916 year ^H8141 by year ^H8141 he shall be with him; he shall not have ^H7287 dominion ^H7287 over him with brutality ^H6531 in your sight ^H5869. 54 Even if ^H518 he is not redeemed ^H1350 by [fn]these ^H428 means, he shall still go ^H3318 out ^H3318 in the year ^H8141 of jubilee ^H3104, he and his sons ^H1121 with him. 55 For the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 are My slaves ^H5650; they are My slaves ^H5650 whom ^H834 I brought ^H3318 out ^H3318 from the land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714. I am Yahweh ^H3068 your God ^H430.
