Parables on Prayer

1 Now ^G1161 He was telling ^G3004 them a parable ^G3850 to show that at all ^G3842 times ^G3842 they ought ^G1163 to pray ^G4336 and not to lose ^G6023 heart ^G6023,

2 saying ^G3004, “In a certain ^G5100 city ^G4172 there ^G1510 was a certain ^G5100 judge ^G2923 who did not fear ^G5399 God ^G2316 and did not respect ^G1788 man ^G444. 3 Now there was a widow ^G5503 in that city ^G4172, and she kept coming ^G2064 to him, saying ^G3004, ‘Give ^G1556 me justice ^G1556 from my opponent ^G476.’ 4 And for a while ^G5550 he was unwilling ^G3756 G2309; but afterward ^G3326 G3778 he said ^G3004 to himself ^G1438, ‘Even ^G2532 though ^G1487 I do not fear ^G5399 God ^G2316 nor ^G3761 respect ^G1788 man ^G444, 5 yet ^G1065 because ^G1223 this ^G3778 widow ^G5503 is bothering ^G3930 G2873 me, I will give ^G1556 her justice ^G1556, lest ^G2443 G3361 by continually ^G1519 G5056 coming ^G2064 she [fn]wears ^G5299 me out.’” 6 And the Lord ^G2962 said ^G3004, “Hear ^G191 what ^G5101 the unjust ^G93 judge ^G2923 *said ^G3004. 7 Now ^G1161, will God ^G2316 not bring ^G4160 about ^G4160 justice ^G1557 for His elect ^G1588 who cry ^G994 to Him day ^G2250 and night ^G3571, [fn]and will He delay ^G3114 long ^G3114 over ^G1909 them? 8 I tell ^G3004 you that He will bring ^G4160 about ^G4160 justice ^G1557 for them quickly ^G5034. However ^G4133, when the Son ^G5207 of Man ^G444 comes ^G2064, will He find ^G2147 that faith ^G4102 on the earth ^G1093?”

9 And He also ^G2532 told ^G3004 this ^G3778 parable ^G3850 to some ^G5100 people ^G5100 who trusted ^G3982 in themselves ^G1438 that they were righteous ^G1342, and viewed ^G1848 others ^G3062 with ^G1848 contempt ^G1848: 10 “Two ^G1417 men ^G444 went ^G305 up ^G305 into the temple ^G2413 to pray ^G4336, one ^G1520 a Pharisee ^G5330 and the other ^G2087 a tax ^G5057 collector ^G5057. 11 The Pharisee ^G5330 stood ^G2476 and was praying ^G4336 these ^G3778 things ^G3778 to himself ^G1438: ‘God ^G2316, I thank ^G2168 You that I am ^G1510 not like ^G5618 other ^G3062 people ^G3062: swindlers ^G727, unjust ^G94, adulterers ^G3432, or ^G2228 even ^G2532 like ^G5613 this ^G3778 tax ^G5057 collector ^G5057. 12 I fast ^G3522 twice ^G1364 a week ^G4521; I pay ^G586 tithes ^G586 of all ^G3956 that I get ^G2932.’ 13 But the tax ^G5057 collector ^G5057, standing ^G2476 some ^G3113 distance ^G3113 away ^G3113, was even ^G3761 unwilling ^G3756 G2309 to lift ^G1869 up ^G1869 his eyes ^G3788 to heaven ^G3772, but was [fn]beating ^G5180 his chest ^G4738, saying ^G3004, ‘God ^G2316, be ^G2433 [fn]merciful ^G2433 to me, the sinner ^G268!’ 14 I tell ^G3004 you, this ^G3778 man ^G3778 went ^G2597 down to his house ^G3624 justified ^G1344 rather ^G3844 than ^G3844 the other ^G1565, for everyone ^G3956 who exalts ^G5312 himself ^G1438 will be humbled ^G5013, but he who humbles ^G5013 himself ^G1438 will be exalted ^G5312.”

15 And they were bringing ^G4374 even ^G2532 their babies ^G1025 to Him so ^G2443 that He would touch ^G681 them, but when the disciples ^G3101 saw ^G3708 it, they were rebuking ^G2008 them. 16 But Jesus ^G2424 called ^G4341 for them, saying ^G3004, “Permit ^G863 the children ^G3813 to come ^G2064 to Me, and do not hinder ^G2967 them, for the kingdom ^G932 of God ^G2316 belongs ^G1510 to such ^G5108 as ^G5108 these ^G5108. 17 Truly ^G281 I say ^G3004 to you, whoever ^G3739 G302 does not receive ^G1209 the kingdom ^G932 of God ^G2316 like ^G5613 a child ^G3813 will never enter ^G1525 it.”

The Rich Young Ruler

18 And a ruler ^G758 questioned ^G1905 Him, saying ^G3004, “Good ^G18 Teacher ^G1320, what ^G5101 shall I do ^G4160 to inherit ^G2816 eternal ^G166 life ^G2222?”

19 And Jesus ^G2424 said ^G3004 to him, “Why ^G5101 do you call ^G3004 Me good ^G18? No ^G3762 one ^G3762 is good ^G18 except ^G1508 God ^G2316 alone ^G1520. 20 You know ^G6063 the commandments ^G1785, ‘DO NOT COMMIT ^G3431 ADULTERY ^G3431, DO NOT MURDER ^G5407, DO NOT STEAL ^G2813, DO NOT BEAR ^G5576 FALSE ^G5576 WITNESS ^G5576, HONOR ^G5091 YOUR FATHER ^G3962 AND MOTHER ^G3384.’” 21 And he said ^G3004, “All ^G3956 these ^G3778 things ^G3778 I have kept ^G5442 from my youth ^G3503.” 22 And when Jesus ^G2424 heard ^G191 this, He said ^G3004 to him, “One ^G1520 thing ^G1520 you still ^G2089 lack ^G3007: sell ^G4453 all ^G3956 that you possess ^G2192 and distribute ^G1239 it to the poor ^G4434, and you shall have ^G2192 treasure ^G2344 in heaven ^G3772. And come ^G1204, follow ^G190 Me.” 23 But when he heard ^G191 these ^G3778 things ^G3778, he became ^G1096 very ^G4036 sad ^G4036, for he was extremely ^G4970 rich ^G4145. 24 And Jesus ^G2424 looked ^G3708 at him and said ^G3004, “How ^G4459 hard ^G1423 it is for those ^G3588 who are wealthy ^G5536 to enter ^G1531 the kingdom ^G932 of God ^G2316! 25 For it is easier ^G2123 for a camel ^G2574 to [fn]go ^G1525 through ^G1223 the eye ^G6085 of a needle ^G6011 than ^G2228 for a rich ^G4145 man ^G4145 to enter ^G1525 the kingdom ^G932 of God ^G2316.” 26 And those who heard ^G191 it said ^G3004, “Then ^G2532 who ^G5101 can ^G1410 be saved ^G4982?” 27 But He said ^G3004, “The things ^G102 that ^G102 are ^G102 impossible ^G102 with people ^G444 are possible ^G1415 with God ^G2316.”

28 And Peter ^G4074 said ^G3004, “Behold ^G2400, we have left ^G863 all that is our own ^G2398 and followed ^G190 You.” 29 And He said ^G3004 to them, “Truly ^G281 I say ^G3004 to you, there is no ^G3762 one ^G3762 who ^G3739 has left ^G863 house ^G3614 or ^G2228 wife ^G1135 or ^G2228 brothers ^G80 or ^G2228 parents ^G1118 or ^G2228 children ^G5043, for the sake ^G6025 of the kingdom ^G932 of God ^G2316, 30 who ^G3739 will not receive ^G2983 many ^G4179 times ^G4179 more ^G4179 at this ^G3778 time ^G2540 and in the age ^G165 to come ^G2064, eternal ^G166 life ^G2222.”

31 But ^G2532 when He took ^G3880 the twelve ^G1427 aside ^G3880, He said ^G3004 to them, “Behold ^G2400, we are going ^G305 up ^G305 to Jerusalem ^G2419, and all ^G3956 things ^G3956 which are written ^G1125 through ^G1223 the prophets ^G4396 about the Son ^G5207 of Man ^G444 will be [fn]completed ^G5055. 32 For He will be [fn]delivered ^G3860 over to the Gentiles ^G1484, and will be mocked ^G1702 and mistreated ^G5195 and spit ^G1716 upon ^G1716, 33 and after they have flogged ^G3146 Him, they will kill ^G615 Him, and the third ^G5154 day ^G2250 He will rise ^G450 again ^G450.” 34 But the disciples understood ^G4920 none ^G3762 of these ^G3778 things ^G3778, and this ^G3778 statement ^G4487 was hidden ^G2928 from them, and they did not comprehend ^G1097 the things that were said ^G3004.

Bartimaeus Regains His Sight

35 Now it happened ^G1096 that as [fn]Jesus was approaching ^G1448 Jericho ^G2410, a blind ^G5185 man ^G5185 was sitting ^G2521 by the road ^G3598 begging ^G1871.

36 Now ^G1161 hearing ^G191 a crowd ^G3793 going ^G1279 by, he began to inquire ^G4441 what ^G5101 this ^G3778 was. 37 They reported ^G518 to him, “Jesus ^G2424 of Nazareth ^G3480 is passing ^G3928 by.” 38 And he called ^G994 out ^G994, saying ^G3004, “Jesus ^G2424, Son ^G5207 of David ^G1138, have ^G1653 mercy ^G1653 on me!” 39 And those ^G3588 who went ^G4254 ahead ^G4254 were rebuking ^G2008 him so that he would be quiet ^G4601, but he kept crying ^G2905 out ^G2905 all ^G4183 the more ^G3123, “Son ^G5207 of David ^G1138, have ^G1653 mercy ^G1653 on me!” 40 And Jesus ^G2424 stopped ^G2476 and commanded ^G2753 that he be brought ^G71 to Him, and when he came ^G1448 near ^G1448, He questioned ^G1905 him, 41 “What ^G5101 do you want ^G2309 Me to do ^G4160 for you?” And he said ^G3004, “Lord ^G2962, I want to regain ^G308 my sight ^G308!” 42 And Jesus ^G2424 said ^G3004 to him, “[fn]Receive ^G308 your sight ^G308; your faith ^G4102 has [fn]saved ^G4982 you ^G4982.” 43 Immediately ^G3916 he regained ^G308 his sight ^G308 and began following ^G190 Him, glorifying ^G1392 God ^G2316. And when all ^G3956 the people ^G2992 saw ^G3708 it, they gave ^G1325 praise ^G136 to God ^G2316.
