Jesus Before Pilate

1 Then ^G2532 their whole ^G537 assembly ^G4128 rose ^G450 up ^G450 and brought ^G71 Him before ^G1909 Pilate ^G4091.

2 And they began ^G757 to accuse ^G2723 Him, saying ^G3004, “We found ^G2147 this ^G3778 man ^G3778 misleading ^G1294 our nation ^G1484 and forbidding ^G2967 to pay ^G1325 taxes ^G5411 to Caesar ^G2541, and saying ^G3004 that He Himself ^G1438 is [fn]Christ ^G5547, a King ^G935.” 3 So ^G1161 Pilate ^G4091 asked ^G2065 Him, saying ^G3004, “Are You the King ^G935 of the Jews ^G2453?” And He answered ^G611 him and said ^G5346, “You yourself ^G4771 say ^G3004 it.” 4 Then ^G2532 Pilate ^G4091 said ^G3004 to the chief ^G749 priests ^G749 and the crowds ^G3793, “I find ^G2147 no ^G3762 guilt ^G159 in this ^G3778 man ^G444.” 5 But they kept on insisting ^G2001, saying ^G3004, “He stirs ^G383 up ^G383 the people ^G2992, teaching ^G1321 all ^G3650 over ^G2596 Judea ^G2449, starting ^G757 from Galilee ^G1056 even as far ^G2193 as this ^G5602 place ^G5602.”

6 Now ^G1161 when Pilate ^G4091 heard ^G191 this, he asked ^G1905 whether ^G1487 the man ^G444 was a Galilean ^G1057. 7 And when he learned ^G1921 that He belonged ^G1510 G1537 to Herod’s ^G2264 jurisdiction ^G1849, he sent ^G375 Him to Herod ^G2264, who himself ^G846 also ^G2532 was in Jerusalem ^G2414 in those days ^G2250.

Jesus Before Herod

8 Now ^G1161 when Herod ^G2264 saw ^G3708 Jesus ^G2424, he rejoiced ^G5463 greatly ^G3029; for he had ^G1510 wanted ^G2309 to see ^G3708 Him for a long ^G2425 time ^G5550, because ^G1223 he had been hearing ^G191 about ^G4012 Him and was hoping ^G1679 to see ^G3708 some ^G5100 [fn]sign ^G4592 performed ^G1096 by Him.

9 And he questioned ^G1905 Him [fn]at some ^G2425 length ^G3056 G2425, but He answered ^G611 him nothing ^G3762. 10 And the chief ^G749 priests ^G749 and the scribes ^G1122 were standing ^G2476 there, vehemently ^G2159 accusing ^G2723 Him. 11 And Herod ^G2264 with his soldiers ^G4753, after treating ^G1848 Him with ^G1848 contempt ^G1848 and mocking ^G1702 Him, dressed ^G4016 Him in a bright ^G2986 robe ^G2066 and sent ^G375 Him back ^G375 to Pilate ^G4091. 12 Now ^G1161 Herod ^G2264 and Pilate ^G4091 became ^G1096 friends ^G5384 with one ^G240 another ^G240 that very ^G846 day ^G2250; for before ^G4391 they had been ^G4391 G1510 at enmity ^G2189 with each ^G848 other ^G848.

Pilate Grants the Crowd’s Request

13 And Pilate ^G4091 summoned ^G4779 the chief ^G749 priests ^G749 and the rulers ^G758 and the people ^G2992,

14 and said ^G3004 to them, “You brought ^G4374 this ^G3778 man ^G444 to me as one who [fn]incites ^G654 the people ^G2992 to rebellion ^G654, and behold ^G2400, having examined ^G350 Him before ^G1799 you, I have found ^G2147 in this ^G3778 man ^G444 no ^G3762 guilt ^G159 of what ^G3739 you are ^G2723 accusing ^G2596 Him. 15 No ^G235, nor ^G3761 has Herod ^G2264, for he sent ^G375 Him back ^G375 to us; and behold ^G2400, nothing ^G3762 deserving ^G514 death ^G2288 has been ^G1510 done ^G4238 by Him. 16 Therefore ^G3767 I will punish ^G3811 Him and release ^G630 Him.” 17 [fn][Now ^G1161 he was obliged ^G2192 G318 to release ^G630 to them at the feast ^G1859 one ^G1520 prisoner.]

18 But they cried ^G349 out ^G349 all ^G3826 together ^G3826, saying ^G3004, “Away ^G142 with this ^G3778 man ^G3778, and release ^G630 for us Barabbas ^G912!” 19 (He had been thrown ^G906 into prison ^G5438 for an insurrection ^G4714 made ^G1096 in the city ^G4172 and for murder ^G5408.) 20 But again ^G3825 Pilate ^G4091 addressed ^G4377 them, wanting ^G2309 to release ^G630 Jesus ^G2424, 21 but they kept on calling ^G2019 out, saying ^G3004, “Crucify ^G4717, crucify ^G4717 Him!” 22 And he said ^G3004 to them a third ^G5154 time ^G5154, “Why ^G1063, what ^G5101 evil ^G2556 has this ^G3778 man ^G3778 done ^G4160? I have found ^G2147 in Him no ^G3762 guilt ^G159 worthy of death ^G2288; therefore ^G3767 I will punish ^G3811 Him and release ^G630 Him.” 23 But they were insistent ^G1945, with loud ^G3173 voices ^G5456 asking ^G154 that He be crucified ^G4717. And their voices ^G5456 were prevailing ^G2729. 24 And Pilate ^G4091 pronounced ^G1948 sentence ^G1948 that their demand ^G155 be granted ^G1096. 25 And he released ^G630 the man they were asking ^G154 for who had been thrown ^G906 into prison ^G5438 for insurrection ^G4714 and murder ^G5408, but he delivered ^G3860 Jesus ^G2424 to their will ^G2307.

Simon Carries the Cross

26 And when ^G5613 they led ^G520 Him away ^G520, they took ^G1949 hold ^G1949 of a man ^G5100, Simon ^G4613 of ^G2956 Cyrene ^G2956, coming ^G2064 in from the country ^G68, and placed ^G2007 on ^G2007 him the cross ^G4716 to carry ^G5342 behind ^G3693 Jesus ^G2424.

27 And following ^G190 Him was a large ^G4183 multitude ^G4128 of the people ^G2992, and of women ^G1135 who ^G3739 were [fn]mourning ^G2875 and lamenting ^G2354 Him.

28 But Jesus ^G2424, turning ^G4762 to them, said ^G3004, “Daughters ^G2364 of Jerusalem ^G2419, stop ^G3361 crying ^G2799 for Me, but cry ^G2799 for yourselves ^G1438 and for your children ^G5043. 29 For behold ^G2400, the days ^G2250 are coming ^G2064 when ^G1722 G3739 they will say ^G3004, ‘Blessed ^G3107 are the barren ^G4723, and the wombs ^G2836 that never ^G3756 bore ^G1080, and the breasts ^G3149 that never ^G3756 nursed ^G5142.’ 30 Then ^G5119 they will begin ^G757 TO SAY ^G3004 TO THE MOUNTAINS ^G3735, ‘FALL ^G4098 ON US,’ AND TO THE HILLS ^G1015, ‘COVER ^G2572 US.’ 31 For if ^G1487 they do ^G4160 these ^G3778 things ^G3778 [fn]when ^G1722 the tree ^G3586 is green ^G5200, what ^G5101 will happen ^G1096 [fn]when ^G1722 it is dry ^G3584?”

32 Now two ^G1417 others ^G2087 also ^G2532, who were criminals ^G2557, were being led ^G71 away ^G71 to be put ^G337 to ^G337 death ^G337 with Him.

The Crucifixion

33 And when ^G3753 they came ^G2064 to the place ^G5117 called ^G2564 [fn]The Skull ^G2898, there ^G1563 they crucified ^G4717 Him and the criminals ^G2557, one ^G3739 on the right ^G1188 and the other ^G3739 on the left ^G710.

34 [fn]But Jesus ^G2424 was saying ^G3004, “Father ^G3962, forgive ^G863 them; for they do not know ^G6063 what ^G5101 they are doing ^G4160.” AND THEY CAST ^G906 LOTS ^G2819, DIVIDING ^G1266 UP HIS GARMENTS ^G2440 AMONG ^G1266 THEMSELVES. 35 And the people ^G2992 stood ^G2476 by, looking ^G2334 on. And even ^G2532 the rulers ^G758 were scoffing ^G1592 at Him, saying ^G3004, “He saved ^G4982 others ^G243; let Him save ^G4982 Himself ^G1438 if ^G1487 this ^G3778 is the [fn]Christ ^G5547 of God ^G2316, His Chosen ^G1588 One ^G1588.” 36 And the soldiers ^G4757 also ^G2532 mocked ^G1702 Him, coming ^G4334 up ^G4334 to Him, offering ^G4374 Him sour ^G3690 wine ^G3690, 37 and saying ^G3004, “If ^G1487 You are the King ^G935 of the Jews ^G2453, save ^G4982 Yourself ^G4572!” 38 Now ^G1161 there was also ^G2532 an inscription ^G1923 above ^G1909 Him, “THIS ^G3778 IS THE KING ^G935 OF THE JEWS ^G2453.”

39 And one ^G1520 of the criminals ^G2557 hanging ^G2910 there was blaspheming Him, saying ^G3004, “Are You not the [fn]Christ ^G5547? Save ^G4982 Yourself ^G4572 and us!” 40 But the other ^G2087 answered ^G611, and rebuking ^G2008 him said ^G5346, “Do you not even ^G3761 fear ^G5399 God ^G2316, since ^G3754 you are under ^G1722 the same ^G846 sentence ^G2917 of ^G2917 condemnation ^G2917? 41 And we indeed ^G3303 are suffering justly ^G1346, for we are receiving ^G618 [fn]what ^G3739 we deserve ^G514 for what we have done ^G3739 G4238; but this ^G3778 man ^G3778 has done ^G4238 nothing ^G3762 wrong ^G824.” 42 And he was saying ^G3004, “Jesus ^G2424, remember ^G3403 me when ^G3752 You come ^G2064 [fn]in Your kingdom ^G932!” 43 And He said ^G3004 to him, “Truly ^G281 I say ^G3004 to you, today ^G4594 you shall be with Me in Paradise ^G3857.”

44 And it was now ^G2235 about ^G5616 [fn]the sixth ^G1623 hour ^G5610, and darkness ^G4655 [fn]fell ^G1096 over ^G1909 the whole ^G3650 land ^G1093 until ^G2193 [fn]the ninth ^G1766 hour ^G5610, 45 [fn]because the sun ^G2246 was obscured ^G1587. And the veil ^G2665 of the [fn]sanctuary ^G3485 was torn ^G4977 [fn]in two ^G3319. 46 And Jesus ^G2424, crying ^G5455 out with a loud ^G3173 voice ^G5456, said ^G3004, “Father ^G3962, INTO YOUR HANDS ^G5495 I COMMIT ^G3908 MY SPIRIT ^G4151.” Having said ^G3004 this ^G3778, He breathed ^G1606 His last ^G1606. 47 Now ^G1161 when the centurion ^G1543 saw ^G3708 what had happened ^G1096, he began praising ^G1392 God ^G2316, saying ^G3004, “Certainly ^G3689 this ^G3778 man ^G444 was righteous ^G1342.” 48 And all ^G3956 the crowds ^G3793 who came ^G4836 together ^G4836 for this ^G3778 spectacle ^G2335, when they observed ^G2334 what had happened ^G1096, were returning ^G5290, [fn]beating ^G5180 their chests ^G4738. 49 And all ^G3956 His acquaintances ^G1110 and the women ^G1135 who accompanied ^G4870 Him from Galilee ^G1056 were standing ^G2476 at a distance ^G3113, watching ^G3708 these ^G3778 things ^G3778.

Jesus Is Buried

50 And behold ^G2400, a man ^G435 named ^G3686 Joseph ^G2501, who was a Council ^G1010 member ^G1010, a good ^G18 and righteous ^G1342 man ^G435

51 (he had not consented ^G4784 to their counsel ^G1012 and action ^G4234), a man from Arimathea ^G707, a city ^G4172 of the Jews ^G2453, who ^G3739 was waiting ^G4327 for the kingdom ^G932 of God ^G2316; 52 this ^G3778 man ^G3778 went ^G4334 to Pilate ^G4091 and asked ^G154 for the body ^G4983 of Jesus ^G2424. 53 And he took ^G2507 it down ^G2507 and wrapped ^G1794 it in a linen ^G4616 cloth ^G4616, and laid ^G5087 Him in a tomb ^G3418 cut ^G2991 into ^G2991 the ^G2991 rock ^G2991, where ^G3757 no ^G3756 one ^G3762 had ever ^G3768 lain ^G2749. 54 It was [fn]Preparation ^G3904 day ^G2250, and the Sabbath ^G4521 was about to [fn]begin ^G2020. 55 Now ^G1161 the women ^G1135, who ^G3748 had come ^G4905 with Him from Galilee ^G1056, followed ^G2628 and beheld ^G2300 the tomb ^G3419 and how ^G5613 His body ^G4983 was laid ^G5087. 56 Then ^G2532 after they returned ^G5290, they prepared ^G2090 spices ^G759 and perfumes ^G3464.

And on the Sabbath ^G4521 they rested ^G2270 according ^G2596 to the commandment ^G1785.
