The Twelve Disciples Sent Out

1 And calling ^G4779 the twelve ^G1427 together ^G4779, He gave ^G1325 them power ^G1411 and authority ^G1849 over ^G1909 all ^G3956 the demons ^G1140 and to heal ^G2323 diseases ^G3554.

2 And He sent ^G649 them out ^G649 to preach ^G2784 the kingdom ^G932 of God ^G2316 and to heal ^G2390 the sick. 3 And He said ^G3004 to them, “Take ^G142 nothing ^G3367 for your journey ^G3598, neither ^G3383 a staff ^G4464, nor ^G3383 a [fn]bag ^G4082, nor ^G3383 bread ^G740, nor ^G3383 money ^G694; nor have ^G2192 two ^G1417 [fn]tunics ^G5509 apiece ^G303. 4 And whatever ^G3739 house ^G3614 you enter ^G1525, stay ^G3306 there ^G1563 [fn]until ^G2532 you leave ^G1831 that city ^G1563. 5 And as for those ^G3745 who ^G3745 do not receive ^G1209 you, as you go ^G1831 out ^G1831 from that city ^G4172, shake ^G660 the dust ^G2868 off ^G660 your feet ^G4228 as a testimony ^G3142 against ^G1909 them.” 6 And departing ^G1831, they were going ^G1330 [fn]throughout ^G1330 the villages ^G2968, proclaiming ^G2097 the gospel ^G2097 and healing ^G2323 everywhere ^G3837.

7 Now ^G1161 Herod ^G2264 the tetrarch ^G5076 heard ^G191 of all ^G3956 that was happening ^G1096, and he was greatly ^G1280 perplexed ^G1280, because ^G1223 it was said ^G3004 by some ^G5100 that John ^G2491 had risen ^G1453 from the dead ^G3498, 8 and by some ^G5100 that Elijah ^G2243 had appeared ^G5316, and by others ^G243 that one ^G5100 of the prophets ^G4396 of old ^G744 had risen ^G450 again ^G450. 9 And Herod ^G2264 said ^G3004, “I myself ^G1473 had John ^G2491 beheaded ^G607, but who ^G5101 is this ^G3778 man ^G3778 about ^G4012 whom ^G3739 I hear ^G191 such ^G5108 things ^G5108?” And he kept trying ^G2212 to see ^G3708 Him.

10 And when the apostles ^G652 returned ^G5290, they recounted ^G1334 to Him all ^G3745 that ^G3745 they had done ^G4160. Jesus Feeds Five Thousand

12 Now the day ^G2250 [fn]was ending ^G2827, and the twelve ^G1427 came ^G4334 and said ^G3004 to Him, “Send ^G630 the crowd ^G3793 away ^G630, that they may go ^G4198 into the surrounding ^G2945 villages ^G2968 and countryside ^G68 and obtain ^G2647 lodging ^G2647 and find ^G2147 provisions ^G1979, for here ^G5602 we are in a desolate ^G2048 place ^G5117.”

13 But He said ^G3004 to them, “You give ^G1325 them something to eat ^G2068!” And they said ^G3004, “We have no ^G3756 more ^G4183 than ^G2228 five ^G4002 loaves ^G740 and two ^G1417 fish ^G2486, unless ^G1487 G3385 perhaps ^G3385 we go ^G4198 and buy ^G59 food ^G1033 for all ^G3956 these ^G3778 people ^G2992.” 14 (For there were about ^G5616 five ^G4000 thousand ^G4000 men ^G435.) And He said ^G3004 to His disciples ^G3101, “Have them [fn]sit ^G2625 down ^G2625 in groups ^G2828 of about ^G5616 fifty ^G4004 each ^G303.” 15 And they did ^G4160 so ^G3779, and had them all ^G537 [fn]sit ^G2625 down ^G2625. 16 Then ^G2532 He took ^G2983 the five ^G4002 loaves ^G740 and the two ^G1417 fish ^G2486, and looking ^G308 up ^G308 to heaven ^G3772, He blessed ^G2127 them. And He broke ^G2622 them and kept giving ^G1325 them to the disciples ^G3101 to set ^G3908 before ^G3908 the crowd ^G3793. 17 And they all ^G3956 ate ^G2068 and were satisfied ^G5526; and [fn]the broken ^G2801 pieces ^G2801 which they had left ^G4052 over ^G4052 were picked ^G142 up ^G142, twelve ^G1427 baskets ^G2894 full.

Peter Confesses Jesus Is the Christ

19 And they answered ^G611 and said ^G3004, “John ^G2491 the Baptist ^G910, and others ^G243 say Elijah ^G2243, but others ^G243, that one ^G5100 of the prophets ^G4396 of old ^G744 has risen ^G450 again ^G450.” 20 And He said ^G3004 to them, “But who ^G5101 do you say ^G3004 that I am ^G1510?” And Peter ^G4074 answered ^G611 and said ^G3004, “The [fn]Christ ^G5547 of God ^G2316.” 21 But He [fn]warned ^G2008 them and directed ^G3853 them not to tell ^G3004 this ^G3778 to anyone ^G3367, 22 saying ^G3004, “The Son ^G5207 of Man ^G444 must ^G1163 suffer ^G3958 many ^G4183 things ^G4183 and be rejected ^G593 by the elders ^G4245 and chief ^G749 priests ^G749 and scribes ^G1122, and be killed ^G615 and be raised ^G1453 up ^G1453 on the third ^G5154 day ^G2250.”

Take Up Your Cross

23 And He was saying ^G3004 to them all ^G3956, “If ^G1487 anyone ^G5100 wishes ^G2309 to come ^G2064 after ^G3694 Me, let him deny ^G720 himself ^G1438, and take ^G142 up ^G142 his cross ^G4716 daily ^G2596 G2250 and follow ^G190 Me.

24 For whoever ^G3739 G1437 wishes ^G2309 to save ^G4982 his [fn]life ^G5590 will lose ^G622 it, but whoever ^G3739 G302 loses ^G622 his [fn]life ^G5590 for My sake ^G6025, he is the one who will save ^G4982 it. 25 For what ^G5101 is a man ^G444 profited ^G5623 if he gains ^G2770 the whole ^G3650 world ^G2889, and loses ^G622 or ^G2228 forfeits ^G2210 himself ^G1438? 26 For whoever ^G3739 G302 is ^G1870 ashamed ^G1870 of Me and My words ^G3056, the Son ^G5207 of Man ^G444 will be ^G1870 ashamed ^G1870 of him when ^G3752 He comes ^G2064 in His glory ^G1391, and the glory of the Father ^G3962 and of the holy ^G40 angels ^G32. 27 But I say ^G3004 to you truthfully ^G230, there are some ^G5100 of those ^G3588 standing ^G2476 here ^G847 who ^G3739 will not taste ^G1089 death ^G2288 until ^G2193 they see ^G3708 the kingdom ^G932 of God ^G2316.”

The Transfiguration

28 Now it happened ^G1096 some ^G5616 eight ^G3638 days ^G2250 after ^G3326 these ^G3778 words ^G3056, that taking ^G3880 along ^G3880 Peter ^G4074 and John ^G2491 and James ^G2385, He went ^G305 up ^G305 on the mountain ^G3735 to pray ^G4336.

And they kept ^G4601 silent ^G4601, and reported ^G518 to no ^G3762 one ^G3762 in those ^G1565 days ^G2250 any ^G3762 of the things which ^G3739 they had seen ^G3708.

Jesus Casts Out a Demon

37 Now it happened ^G1096 on the next ^G1836 day ^G2250, that when they came ^G2718 down ^G2718 from the mountain ^G3735, a large ^G4183 crowd ^G3793 met ^G4876 Him.

Bring ^G4317 your son ^G5207 here ^G5602.” 42 Now while he was still ^G2089 approaching ^G4334, the demon ^G1140 [fn]slammed ^G4486 him to the ground and threw ^G4952 him into ^G4952 a ^G4952 convulsion ^G4952. But Jesus ^G2424 rebuked ^G2008 the unclean ^G169 spirit ^G4151 and healed ^G2390 the boy ^G3816 and gave ^G591 him back ^G591 to his father ^G3962. 43 And they were all ^G3956 astonished ^G1605 at the majesty ^G3168 of God ^G2316.

But while everyone ^G3956 was ^G2296 marveling ^G2296 at all ^G3956 that He was doing ^G4160, He said ^G3004 to His disciples ^G3101, 44 “Put ^G5087 these ^G3778 words ^G3056 into your ears ^G3775; for the Son ^G5207 of Man ^G444 is ^G3195 going ^G3195 to ^G3195 be [fn]delivered ^G3860 into the hands ^G5495 of men ^G444.” 45 But they [fn]did not understand ^G50 this ^G3778 statement ^G4487, and it was concealed ^G3871 from them so ^G2443 that they would not perceive ^G143 it, and they were ^G5399 afraid ^G5399 to ask ^G2065 Him about ^G4012 this ^G3778 statement ^G4487.

Who Is the Greatest?

46 Now an argument ^G1261 [fn]started ^G1525 among ^G1722 them as to which ^G5101 of them might be the greatest ^G3173.

47 But Jesus ^G2424, knowing ^G6063 [fn]what ^G1261 they were thinking ^G1261 in their heart ^G2588, took ^G1949 a child ^G3813 and stood ^G2476 him by His side ^G3844, 48 and said ^G3004 to them, “Whoever ^G3739 G1437 receives ^G1209 this ^G3778 child ^G3813 in My name ^G3686 receives ^G1209 Me, and whoever ^G3739 G302 receives ^G1209 Me receives ^G1209 Him who sent ^G649 Me; for the one ^G3588 who is least ^G3398 among ^G1722 all ^G3956 of you, this ^G3778 is the one who is great ^G3173.”

49 And John ^G2491 answered ^G611 and said ^G3004, “Master ^G1988, we saw ^G3708 someone ^G5100 casting ^G1544 out ^G1544 demons ^G1140 in Your name ^G3686, and we tried to hinder ^G2967 him because ^G3754 he does not follow ^G190 along with us.” 50 But Jesus ^G2424 said ^G3004 to him, “Do not hinder ^G2967 him, for he who ^G3739 is not against ^G2596 you is [fn]for you.”

51 Now it happened ^G1096 that when ^G1722 the days ^G2250 for Him to be taken ^G354 up ^G354 were soon to be fulfilled ^G4845, He set ^G4741 His face ^G3588 to go ^G4198 to Jerusalem ^G2419; 52 and He sent ^G649 messengers ^G32 on ahead ^G4253 G4383 of Him, and they went ^G4198 and entered ^G1525 a village ^G2968 of the Samaritans ^G4541 to [fn]make ^G2090 arrangements ^G2090 for Him. 53 But they did not receive ^G1209 Him, because ^G3754 [fn]He was journeying ^G4198 with His face ^G4383 toward ^G1519 Jerusalem ^G2419. 54 And when His disciples ^G3101 James ^G2385 and John ^G2491 saw ^G3708 this, they said ^G3004, “Lord ^G2962, do You want ^G2309 us to command ^G3004 fire ^G4442 to come ^G2597 down ^G2597 from heaven ^G3772 and consume ^G355 them?” 55 But He turned ^G4762 and rebuked ^G2008 them, [fn][and said ^G3004, “You do not know ^G6063 what ^G4169 kind ^G4169 of spirit ^G4151 you are of, 56 for the Son ^G5207 of Man ^G444 did not come ^G2064 to destroy ^G622 men’s ^G444 lives ^G5590, but to save ^G4982 them.”] And they went ^G4198 on to another ^G2087 village ^G2968.

The Cost of Following Jesus

57 And as they were going ^G4198 along ^G1722 the road ^G3598, someone ^G5100 said ^G3004 to Him, “I will follow ^G190 You wherever ^G3699 G1437 You go ^G565.”

58 And Jesus ^G2424 said ^G3004 to him, “The foxes ^G258 have ^G2192 holes ^G5454 and the birds ^G4071 of the [fn]air ^G3772 have [fn]nests ^G2682, but the Son ^G5207 of Man ^G444 has ^G2192 nowhere ^G3756 G4226 to lay ^G2827 His head ^G2776.” 59 And He said ^G3004 to another ^G2087, “Follow ^G190 Me.” But he said ^G3004, “Lord ^G2962, permit ^G2010 me first ^G4413 to go ^G565 and bury ^G2290 my father ^G3962.” 60 But He said ^G3004 to him, “Allow ^G863 the dead ^G3498 to bury ^G2290 their own ^G1438 dead ^G3498; but as for you, go ^G565 and proclaim ^G1229 everywhere ^G1229 the kingdom ^G932 of God ^G2316.” 61 Another ^G2087 also ^G2532 said ^G3004, “I will follow ^G190 You, Lord ^G2962, but first ^G4413 permit ^G2010 me to say ^G657 farewell ^G657 to those ^G3588 at home ^G3624.” 62 But Jesus ^G2424 said ^G3004 to him, “No ^G3762 one ^G3762, after putting ^G1911 his hand ^G5495 to the plow ^G723 and looking ^G991 back ^G3694, is fit ^G2111 for the kingdom ^G932 of God ^G2316.”
