Jesus Heals a Paralytic

1 And when He had come ^G1525 back ^G3825 to Capernaum ^G2584 several days ^G2250 afterward ^G1223, it was heard ^G191 that He was at home ^G3624.

2 And many ^G4183 were gathered ^G4863 together ^G4863, so ^G5620 that there was ^G5562 no ^G3371 longer ^G3371 room ^G5562, not even ^G3366 near ^G4314 the door ^G2374; and He was speaking ^G2980 the word ^G3056 to them. 3 And they *came ^G2064, bringing ^G5342 to Him a paralytic ^G3885, carried ^G142 by four ^G5064 men ^G5064. 4 And being unable ^G3361 G1410 to bring ^G4374 him to [fn]Jesus because ^G1223 of the crowd ^G3793, they removed ^G648 the roof ^G4721 over where ^G3699 He was; and when they had dug ^G1846 an ^G1846 opening ^G1846, they let ^G5465 down ^G5465 the mat ^G2895 where ^G3699 the paralytic ^G3885 was lying ^G2621. 5 And Jesus ^G2424 seeing ^G3708 their faith ^G4102 *said ^G3004 to the paralytic ^G3885, “Child ^G5043, your sins ^G266 are forgiven ^G863.” 6 But some ^G5100 of the scribes ^G1122 were sitting ^G2521 there ^G1563 and reasoning ^G1260 in their hearts ^G2588, 7 “Why ^G5101 does this ^G3778 man ^G3778 speak ^G2980 that way ^G3779? He is blaspheming ^G987; who ^G5101 can ^G1410 forgive ^G863 sins ^G266 [fn]but God ^G2316 alone ^G1520?” 8 Immediately ^G2117 Jesus ^G2424, aware ^G1921 [fn]in His spirit ^G4151 that they were reasoning ^G1260 that way ^G3779 within ^G1722 themselves ^G1438, *said ^G3004 to them, “Why ^G5101 are you reasoning ^G1260 about ^G1260 these ^G3778 things ^G3778 in your hearts ^G2588? 9 Which ^G5101 is easier ^G2123, to say ^G3004 to the paralytic ^G3885, ‘Your sins ^G266 are forgiven ^G863’; or ^G2228 to say ^G3004, ‘Get ^G1453 up ^G1453, and pick ^G142 up ^G142 your mat ^G2895 and walk ^G4043’? 10 But so ^G2443 that you may know ^G6063 that the Son ^G5207 of Man ^G444 has ^G2192 authority ^G1849 on earth ^G1093 to forgive ^G863 sins ^G266”—He *said ^G3004 to the paralytic ^G3885, 11 “I say ^G3004 to you, get ^G1453 up ^G1453, pick ^G142 up ^G142 your mat ^G2895, and go ^G5217 to ^G1519 your ^G4771 home ^G3624.” 12 And he got ^G1453 up ^G1453 and immediately ^G2117 picked ^G142 up ^G142 the mat ^G2895 and went ^G1831 out ^G1831 before ^G1715 everyone ^G3956, so ^G5620 that they were all ^G3956 amazed ^G1839 and were glorifying ^G1392 God ^G2316, saying ^G3004, “We have never ^G3763 seen ^G3708 anything like ^G3779 this ^G3779.”

13 And He went ^G1831 out ^G1831 again ^G3825 by the seashore ^G2281; and the entire ^G3956 crowd ^G3793 was coming ^G2064 to Him, and He was teaching ^G1321 them.

Levi and Sinners Called

14 And as He passed ^G3855 by, He saw ^G3708 [fn]Levi ^G3017 the son of Alphaeus ^G256 sitting ^G2521 in the tax ^G5058 office ^G5058, and He *said ^G3004 to him, “Follow ^G190 Me!” And he stood ^G450 up ^G450 and followed ^G190 Him.

15 And it *[fn]happened ^G1096 that as He was reclining ^G2621 at the table in his house ^G3614, many ^G4183 tax ^G5057 collectors ^G5057 and [fn]sinners ^G268 [fn]were reclining ^G4873 with Jesus ^G2424 and His disciples ^G3101. For there were many ^G4183 of them, and they were following ^G190 Him. 16 And when the scribes ^G1122 of the Pharisees ^G5330 saw ^G3708 that He was eating ^G2068 with the sinners ^G268 and tax ^G5057 collectors ^G5057, they were saying ^G3004 to His disciples ^G3101, “He is eating ^G2068 and drinking ^G4095 with tax ^G5057 collectors ^G5057 and [fn]sinners ^G268!” 17 And hearing ^G191 this, Jesus ^G2424 *said ^G3004 to them, “Those ^G3588 who are healthy ^G2480 do not have need ^G5532 G3364 for a physician ^G2395, but only those who are sick ^G1342; I did not come ^G2064 to call ^G2564 the righteous ^G1342, but sinners ^G268.”

18 And John’s ^G2491 disciples ^G3101 and the Pharisees ^G5330 were fasting ^G3522; and they *came ^G2064 and *said ^G3004 to Him, “Why ^G1223 G5101 do John’s ^G2491 disciples ^G3101 and the disciples ^G3101 of the Pharisees ^G5330 fast ^G3522, but Your disciples ^G3101 do not fast ^G3522?” 19 And Jesus ^G2424 said ^G3004 to them, “Can ^G1410 [fn]the attendants ^G5207 of the bridegroom ^G3567 fast ^G3522 when ^G1722 G3739 the bridegroom ^G3566 is with them? So ^G3745 long ^G5550 as they have ^G2192 the bridegroom ^G3566 with them, they cannot ^G1410 G3361 fast ^G3522. 20 But the days ^G2250 will come ^G2064 when ^G3752 the bridegroom ^G3566 is taken ^G522 away ^G522 from them, and then ^G5119 they will fast ^G3522 in that day ^G2250.

21 “No ^G3762 one ^G3762 sews ^G1976 [fn]a piece ^G1915 of unshrunk ^G46 cloth ^G4470 on an old ^G3820 garment ^G2440; otherwise ^G1490 [fn]that patch ^G4138 pulls ^G142 away ^G142 from it, the new ^G2537 from the old ^G3820, and a worse ^G5501 tear ^G4978 results ^G1096. 22 And no ^G3762 one ^G3762 puts ^G906 new ^G3501 wine ^G3631 into old ^G3820 wineskins ^G779; otherwise ^G1490 the wine ^G3631 will burst ^G4486 the skins ^G779, and the wine ^G3631 is lost ^G622 and the skins ^G779 as well; but one puts new ^G3501 wine ^G3631 into fresh ^G2537 wineskins ^G779.”

Lord of the Sabbath

23 And it happened ^G1096 that He was passing ^G3899 through ^G1223 the grainfields ^G4702 on the Sabbath ^G4521, and His disciples ^G3101 began ^G757 to make ^G4160 their way ^G3598 along while picking ^G5089 the heads ^G4719 of grain.

24 And the Pharisees ^G5330 were saying ^G3004 to Him, “Look ^G2396, why ^G5101 are they doing ^G4160 what ^G3739 is not lawful ^G1832 on the Sabbath ^G4521?” 25 And He *said ^G3004 to them, “Have you never ^G3763 read ^G314 what ^G5101 David ^G1138 did ^G4160 when ^G3753 he was in need ^G5532 and he and his companions ^G3588 G3326 became hungry ^G3983; 26 how ^G4459 he entered ^G1525 the house ^G3624 of God ^G2316 around ^G1909 the ^G1909 time ^G1909 of Abiathar ^G8 the high ^G749 priest ^G749, and ate ^G2068 the [fn]consecrated ^G4286 bread ^G740, which ^G3739 is not lawful ^G1832 for anyone to eat ^G2068 except ^G1508 the priests ^G2409, and he also ^G2532 gave ^G1325 it to those ^G3588 who were with him?” 27 And Jesus was saying ^G3004 to them, “The Sabbath ^G4521 [fn]was made ^G1096 [fn]for man ^G444, and not man ^G444 [fn]for the Sabbath ^G4521. 28 Consequently ^G5620 the Son ^G5207 of Man ^G444 is Lord ^G2962 even ^G2532 of the Sabbath ^G4521.”
