John the Baptist Beheaded

1 At that [fn]time ^G2540 Herod ^G2264 the tetrarch ^G5076 heard ^G191 the news ^G189 about Jesus ^G2424,

2 and said ^G3004 to his servants ^G3816, “This ^G3778 is John ^G2491 the Baptist ^G910; [fn]he has risen ^G1453 from the dead ^G3498, and that is why ^G1223 miraculous ^G1411 powers ^G1411 are at work ^G1754 in him.”

3 For when Herod ^G2264 had John ^G2491 arrested ^G2902, he bound ^G1210 him and put ^G659 him in prison ^G5438 because ^G1223 of Herodias ^G2266, the wife ^G1135 of his brother ^G80 Philip ^G5376. 4 For John ^G2491 had been saying ^G3004 to him, “It is not lawful ^G1832 for you to have ^G2192 her.” 5 And although Herod wanted ^G2309 to put ^G615 him to ^G615 death ^G615, he feared ^G5399 the crowd ^G3793, because ^G3754 they were regarding ^G2192 [fn]John ^G846 as a prophet ^G4396.

6 But when Herod’s ^G2264 birthday ^G1077 came ^G1096, the daughter ^G2364 of Herodias ^G2266 danced ^G3738 [fn]before ^G1722 G3319 them and pleased ^G700 Herod ^G2264, 7 so ^G3606 much that he promised ^G3670 with an oath ^G3727 to give ^G1325 her whatever ^G3739 G1437 she asked ^G154. 8 Now having been prompted ^G4264 by her mother ^G3384, she *said ^G5346, “Give ^G1325 me here ^G5602 on a platter ^G4094 the head ^G2776 of John ^G2491 the Baptist ^G910.” 9 And although he was grieved ^G3076, the king ^G935 commanded ^G2753 it to be given ^G1325 because ^G1223 of his oaths ^G3727, and because of [fn]his dinner ^G4873 guests ^G4873. 10 And he sent ^G3992 and had John ^G2491 beheaded ^G607 in the prison ^G5438. 11 And his head ^G2776 was brought ^G5342 on a platter ^G4094 and given ^G1325 to the girl ^G2877, and she brought ^G5342 it to her mother ^G3384. 12 And his disciples ^G3101 came ^G4334 and took ^G142 away ^G142 the body ^G4430 and buried ^G2290 [fn]it; and they went ^G2064 and reported ^G518 to Jesus ^G2424.

Jesus Feeds Five Thousand

13 Now ^G1161 when Jesus ^G2424 heard ^G191 about John, He withdrew ^G402 from ^G1564 there ^G1564 in a boat ^G4143 to a desolate ^G2048 place ^G5117 by Himself ^G2398; and when the crowds ^G3793 heard ^G191 of this, they followed ^G190 Him on foot ^G3979 from the cities ^G4172.

14 And when He went ^G1831 [fn]ashore ^G1831, He saw ^G3708 a large ^G4183 crowd ^G3793, and felt ^G4697 compassion ^G4697 for them and healed ^G2323 their sick ^G732.

15 Now when it was evening ^G3798, the disciples ^G3101 came ^G4334 to Him and said ^G3004, “This ^G3588 place ^G5117 is desolate ^G2048 and the hour ^G5610 is already ^G2235 [fn]late ^G3928; so ^G3767 send ^G630 the crowds ^G3793 away ^G630, that they may go ^G565 into the villages ^G2968 and buy ^G59 food ^G1033 for themselves ^G1438.” 16 But Jesus ^G2424 said ^G3004 to them, “They do not need ^G5532 to go ^G565 away ^G565; you give ^G1325 them something to eat ^G2068!” 17 But they *said ^G3004 to Him, “We have ^G2192 here ^G5602 only ^{G3756 G1487 G3361} five ^G4002 loaves ^G740 and two ^G1417 fish ^G2486.” 18 And He said ^G3004, “Bring ^G5342 them here ^G5602 to Me.” 19 And ordering ^G2753 the crowds ^G3793 to [fn]sit ^G347 down ^G347 on the grass ^G5528, He took ^G2983 the five ^G4002 loaves ^G740 and the two ^G1417 fish ^G2486, and looking ^G308 up ^G308 toward ^G1519 heaven ^G3772, He blessed ^G2127 the food. Jesus Walks on the Sea

23 And after He had sent ^G630 the crowds ^G3793 away ^G630, He went ^G305 up ^G305 on the mountain ^G3735 by Himself ^G2398 to pray ^G4336; and when it was evening ^G3798, He was there ^G1563 alone ^G3441. 24 But the boat ^G4143 was already ^G2235 many ^G4183 [fn]stadia ^G4712 away from the land ^G1093, [fn]being battered ^G928 by the waves ^G2949; for the wind ^G417 was [fn]against ^G1727 them. 25 And in the [fn]fourth ^G5067 watch ^G5438 of the night ^G3571 He came ^G2064 to them, walking ^G4043 on the sea ^G2281. 26 Now when the disciples ^G3101 saw ^G3708 Him walking ^G4043 on the sea ^G2281, they were terrified ^G5015, and said ^G3004, “It is a ghost ^G5326!” And they cried ^G2896 out ^G2896 [fn]in fear ^G5401. 27 But immediately ^G2117 Jesus ^G2424 spoke ^G2980 to them, saying ^G3004, “Take ^G2293 courage ^G2293, [fn]it is I; do not be ^G5399 afraid ^G5399.”

28 And Peter ^G4074 answered ^G611 and said ^G3004 to Him, “Lord ^G2962, if ^G1487 it is You, command ^G2753 me to come ^G2064 to You on the water ^G5204.” 29 And He said ^G3004, “Come ^G2064!” And getting ^G2597 out ^G2597 of the boat ^G4143, Peter ^G4074 walked ^G4043 on the water ^G5204 and came ^G2064 toward ^G4314 Jesus ^G2424. 30 But seeing ^G991 the wind ^G417, he became ^G5399 frightened ^G5399, and beginning ^G757 to sink ^G2670, he cried ^G2896 out ^G2896, saying ^G3004, “Lord ^G2962, save ^G4982 me!” 31 And immediately ^G2112 Jesus ^G2424 stretched ^G1614 out ^G1614 His hand ^G5495 and took ^G1949 hold ^G1949 of him, and *said ^G3004 to him, “You of ^G3640 little ^G3640 faith ^G3640, why ^G1519 G5101 did you doubt ^G1365?” 32 And when they got ^G305 into the boat ^G4143, the wind ^G417 stopped ^G2869. 33 And those ^G3588 who were in the boat ^G4143 worshiped ^G4352 Him, saying ^G3004, “You are truly ^G230 God’s ^G2316 Son ^G5207!”

34 And when they had crossed ^G1276 over ^G1276, they came ^G2064 to land ^G1093 at Gennesaret ^G1082. 35 And when the men ^G435 of that place ^G5117 [fn]recognized ^G1921 Him, they sent ^G649 word into all ^G3650 that surrounding ^G4066 district ^G4066 and brought ^G4374 to Him all ^G3956 who were sick ^G2560; 36 and they were pleading ^G3870 with Him that they might just ^G3441 touch ^G681 the fringe ^G2899 of His garment ^G2440; and as many ^G3745 as touched ^G681 it were cured ^G1295.
