The Plot to Kill Jesus

2 “You know ^G6063 that after ^G3326 two ^G1417 days ^G2250 the Passover ^G3957 is coming ^G1096, and the Son ^G5207 of Man ^G444 is to be delivered ^G3860 over for crucifixion ^G4717.”

3 Then ^G5119 the chief ^G749 priests ^G749 and the elders ^G4245 of the people ^G2992 were gathered ^G4863 together ^G4863 in the court ^G833 of the high ^G749 priest ^G749, named ^G3004 Caiaphas ^G2533; 4 and they plotted ^G4823 together ^G4823 to seize ^G2902 Jesus ^G2424 by stealth ^G1388 and kill ^G615 Him. 5 But they were saying ^G3004, “Not during ^G1722 the festival ^G1859, lest ^G2443 G3361 a riot ^G2351 occur ^G1096 among ^G1722 the people ^G2992.”

The Costly Perfume

6 Now ^G1161 when Jesus ^G2424 was in Bethany ^G963, at the home ^G3614 of Simon ^G4613 the leper ^G3015,

7 a woman ^G1135 came ^G4334 to Him with an alabaster ^G211 jar ^G211 of very ^G927 costly ^G927 perfume ^G3464, and she poured ^G2708 it on His head ^G2776 as He reclined ^G345 at the table. 8 But when ^G3708 the disciples ^G3101 saw ^G3708 this, they were indignant ^G23, saying ^G3004, “Why ^G1519 G5101 this ^G3778 waste ^G684? 9 For this ^G3778 perfume might ^G1410 have been sold ^G4097 for a high ^G4183 price ^G4183 and the money given ^G1325 to the poor ^G4434.” 10 But Jesus ^G2424, aware ^G1097 of this, said ^G3004 to them, “Why ^G5101 do you bother ^G2873 G3930 the woman ^G1135? Judas Looks to Betray Jesus

14 Then ^G5119 one ^G1520 of the twelve ^G1427, named ^G3004 Judas ^G2455 Iscariot ^G2469, went ^G4198 to the chief ^G749 priests ^G749

The Passover Meal

20 Now ^G1161 when evening ^G3798 came ^G1096, Jesus was reclining ^G345 at the table with the twelve ^G1427 disciples ^G3101. 21 And as they were eating ^G2068, He said ^G3004, “Truly ^G281 I say ^G3004 to you that one ^G1520 of you will betray ^G3860 Me.” 22 And being deeply ^G4970 grieved ^G3076, they [fn]each ^G1538 one ^G1520 began ^G757 to say ^G3004 to Him, “Surely ^G3385 not I, Lord ^G2962?” 23 And He answered ^G611 and said ^G3004, “He who dipped ^G1686 his hand ^G5495 with Me in the bowl ^G5165 is the one ^G3778 who will betray ^G3860 Me. 24 The Son ^G5207 of Man ^G444 is going ^G5217, just ^G2531 as it is written ^G1125 of Him; but woe ^G3759 to that man ^G444 by whom ^G3739 the Son ^G5207 of Man ^G444 is betrayed ^G3860! It would have been ^G1510 good ^G2570 [fn]for that man ^G444 if ^G1487 he had not been born ^G1080.” 25 And Judas ^G2455, who was betraying ^G3860 Him, answered ^G611 and said ^G3004, “Surely ^G3385 not I ^G1473, Rabbi ^G4461?” Jesus *said ^G3004 to him, “You yourself ^G4771 said ^G3004 it.”

The Lord’s Supper

26 Now while they were eating ^G2068, Jesus ^G2424 took ^G2983 some bread ^G740, and [fn]after a blessing ^G2127, He broke ^G2806 it. And giving ^G1325 it to the disciples ^G3101, He said ^G3004, “Take ^G2983, eat ^G2068; this ^G3778 is My body ^G4983.”

27 And when He had taken ^G2983 a cup ^G4221 and given ^G1325 thanks ^G2168, He gave ^G1325 it to them, saying ^G3004, “Drink ^G4095 from it, all ^G3956 of you; 28 for this ^G3778 is My blood ^G129 of the covenant ^G1242, which is poured ^G1632 out ^G1632 for many ^G4183 for forgiveness ^G859 of sins ^G266. 29 But I say ^G3004 to you, I will not drink ^G4095 of this ^G3778 fruit ^G6013 of the vine ^G288 from now ^G737 on until ^G2193 that day ^G2250 when ^G3752 I drink ^G4095 it new ^G2537 with you in My Father’s ^G3962 kingdom ^G932.”

Jesus Prays in Gethsemane

37 And He took ^G3880 with Him Peter ^G4074 and the two ^G1417 sons ^G5207 of Zebedee ^G2199, and began ^G757 to be grieved ^G3076 and distressed ^G85. 38 Then ^G5119 He *said ^G3004 to them, “My soul ^G5590 is deeply ^G4036 grieved ^G4036, to ^G2193 the ^G2193 point ^G2193 of death ^G2288; remain ^G3306 here ^G5602 and keep ^G1127 watch ^G1127 with Me.”

39 And He went ^G4281 a little ^G3398 beyond ^G4281 them, and fell ^G4098 on His face ^G4383 and prayed ^G4336, saying ^G3004, “My Father ^G3962, if ^G1487 it is possible ^G1415, let this ^G3778 cup ^G4221 pass ^G3928 from Me; yet ^G4133 not as I will ^G2309, but as You will.” 40 And He *came ^G2064 to the disciples ^G3101 and *found ^G2147 them sleeping ^G2518, and *said ^G3004 to Peter ^G4074, “So ^G3779, you men could ^G2480 not keep ^G1127 watch ^G1127 with Me for one ^G1520 hour ^G5610? 41 Keep ^G1127 watching ^G1127 and praying ^G4336 that you may not enter ^G1525 into temptation ^G3986; the spirit ^G4151 is willing ^G4289, but the flesh ^G4561 is weak ^G772.”

42 He went ^G565 away ^G565 again ^G3825 a second ^G1208 time ^G1208 and prayed ^G4336, saying ^G3004, “My Father ^G3962, if ^G1487 this ^G3778 cannot ^G1410 G3756 pass ^G3928 away ^G3928 unless ^G1437 G3361 I drink ^G4095 it, Your will ^G2307 be done ^G1096.” 43 And again ^G3825 He came ^G2064 and found ^G2147 them sleeping ^G2518, for their eyes ^G3788 were heavy ^G916. 44 And He left ^G863 them again ^G3825, and went ^G565 away ^G565 and prayed ^G4336 a third ^G5154 time ^G5154, saying ^G3004 the same ^G846 thing ^G3056 once ^G3825 more ^G3825. 45 Then ^G5119 He *came ^G2064 to the disciples ^G3101 and *said ^G3004 to them, “[fn]Are you still ^G3062 sleeping ^G2518 and resting ^G373? Behold ^G2400, the hour ^G5610 is ^G1448 at ^G1448 hand ^G1448 and the Son ^G5207 of Man ^G444 is being betrayed ^G3860 into the hands ^G5495 of sinners ^G268. 46 Get ^G1453 up ^G1453, let us go ^G71; behold ^G2400, the one who betrays ^G3860 Me is at hand ^G1448!”

The Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

47 And ^G2532 while He was still ^G2089 speaking ^G2980, behold ^G2400, Judas ^G2455, one ^G1520 of the twelve ^G1427, came ^G2064 up, and ^G2532 with ^G3326 him ^G846 was a large ^G4183 crowd ^G3793 with swords ^G3162 and clubs ^G3586, who came from the chief ^G749 priests ^G749 and elders ^G4245 of the people ^G2992.

48 Now ^G1161 he who was betraying ^G3860 Him gave ^G1325 them a sign ^G4592, saying ^G3004, “Whomever ^G3739 G302 I kiss ^G5368, He is the one; seize ^G2902 Him.” 49 And immediately ^G2112 Judas went ^G4334 to Jesus ^G2424 and said ^G3004, “Greetings ^G5463, Rabbi ^G4461!” and kissed ^G2705 Him. 50 And Jesus ^G2424 said ^G3004 to him, “Friend ^G2083, do what ^G3739 you have ^G3918 come ^G3918 for.” Then ^G5119 they came ^G4334 and laid ^G1911 hands ^G5495 on Jesus ^G2424 and seized ^G2902 Him.

55 At that time ^G5610 Jesus ^G2424 said ^G3004 to the crowds ^G3793, “Have you come ^G1831 out ^G1831 with swords ^G3162 and clubs ^G3586 to arrest ^G4815 Me as you would against ^G1909 a robber ^G3027? Jesus Before Caiaphas

57 Now those ^G3588 who had seized ^G2902 Jesus ^G2424 led ^G520 Him away ^G520 to Caiaphas ^G2533, the high ^G749 priest ^G749, where ^G3699 the scribes ^G1122 and the elders ^G4245 were gathered ^G4863 together ^G4863.

58 But Peter ^G4074 was following ^G190 Him at a distance ^G3113 as ^G2193 far ^G2193 as ^G2193 the courtyard ^G833 of the high ^G749 priest ^G749, and entered ^G1525 in ^G1525, and sat ^G2521 down ^G2521 with the [fn]officers ^G5257 to see ^G3708 the outcome ^G5056.

59 Now ^G1161 the chief ^G749 priests ^G749 and the whole ^G3650 Sanhedrin ^G4892 kept trying ^G2212 to ^G2212 obtain ^G2212 false ^G5577 testimony ^G5577 against ^G2596 Jesus ^G2424, so ^G3704 that they might put ^G2289 Him to ^G2289 death ^G2289. 60 And they did not find ^G2147 any, even though many ^G4183 false ^G5575 witnesses ^G5575 came ^G4334 forward ^G4334. But later ^G5305 on two ^G1417 came ^G4334 forward ^G4334, 61 and said ^G3004, “This ^G3778 man ^G3778 stated ^G5346, ‘I am ^G1410 able ^G1410 to destroy ^G2647 the [fn]sanctuary ^G3485 of God ^G2316 and to rebuild ^G3618 it [fn]in three ^G5140 days ^G2250.’” 62 And the high ^G749 priest ^G749 stood ^G450 up ^G450 and said ^G3004 to Him, “Do You not answer ^G611? What ^G5101 are these ^G3778 men ^G3778 testifying ^G2649 against ^G2649 You?” 63 But Jesus ^G2424 kept ^G4623 silent ^G4623. And the high ^G749 priest ^G749 said ^G3004 to Him, “I put ^G1844 You under oath ^G1844 by the living ^G2198 God ^G2316, that You tell ^G3004 us whether ^G1487 You are the [fn]Christ ^G5547, the Son ^G5207 of God ^G2316.” 64 Jesus ^G2424 *said ^G3004 to him, “You yourself ^G4771 said ^G3004 it; nevertheless ^G4133 I tell ^G3004 you, [fn]hereafter ^G575 G737 you will see ^G3708 THE SON ^G5207 OF MAN ^G444 SITTING ^G2521 AT THE RIGHT ^G1188 HAND ^G1188 OF POWER ^G1411 and COMING ^G2064 ON THE CLOUDS ^G3507 OF HEAVEN ^G3772.”

65 Then ^G5119 the high ^G749 priest ^G749 tore ^G1284 his garments ^G2440 and said ^G3004, “He has blasphemed ^G987! What ^G5101 further ^G2089 need ^G5532 do we have ^G2192 of witnesses ^G3144? Behold ^G2396, you have now ^G3568 heard ^G191 the blasphemy ^G988; 66 what ^G5101 do you think ^G1380?” They answered ^G611 and said ^G3004, “He deserves ^G1777 death ^G2288!”

67 Then ^G5119 they spat ^G1716 in His face ^G4383 and beat ^G2852 Him with ^G2852 their fists ^G2852; and others ^G3588 [fn]slapped ^G4474 Him, 68 and said ^G3004, “Prophesy ^G4395 to us, O [fn]Christ ^G5547; who ^G5101 is the one who hit ^G3817 You?”

Peter’s Denials

69 Now ^G1161 Peter ^G4074 was sitting ^G2521 outside ^G1854 in the courtyard ^G833, and a servant-girl ^G3814 came ^G4334 to him and said ^G3004, “You too ^G2532 were with Jesus ^G2424 the Galilean ^G1057.”

70 But he denied ^G720 it before ^G1715 them all ^G3956, saying ^G3004, “I do not know ^G6063 what ^G5101 you are talking ^G3004 about.” 71 And when he had gone ^G1831 out ^G1831 to the gateway ^G4440, another ^G243 servant-girl saw ^G3708 him and *said ^G3004 to those ^G3588 who ^G3588 were there ^G1563, “This ^G3778 man ^G3778 was with Jesus ^G2424 of Nazareth ^G3480.” 72 And again ^G3825 he denied ^G720 it with an oath ^G3727, “I do not know ^G6063 the man ^G444.” 73 A little ^G3398 later ^G3326 the bystanders ^G2476 came ^G4334 up ^G4334 and said ^G3004 to Peter ^G4074, “Surely ^G230 you too ^G2532 are one of them; for even ^G2532 the way ^G2981 you talk ^G2981 [fn]gives ^G4160 you away ^G1212 G4160.” 74 Then ^G5119 he began ^G757 to curse ^G2653 and swear ^G3660, “I do not know ^G6063 the man ^G444!” And immediately ^G2117 a rooster ^G220 crowed ^G5455. 75 And Peter ^G4074 remembered ^G3403 the word ^G4487 which Jesus ^G2424 had said ^G3004, “Before ^G4250 a rooster ^G220 crows ^G5455, you will deny ^G533 Me three ^G5151 times ^G5151.” And he went ^G1831 out ^G1831 and cried ^G2799 bitterly ^G4090.
