Judas’ Remorse
1 Now G1161 when morning G4407 came G1096, all G3956 the chief G749 priests G749 and the elders G4245 of the people G2992 took G2983 counsel G4824 together G4824 against G2596 Jesus G2424 to put G2289 Him to G2289 death G2289;
2 and they bound G1210 Him, and led G520 Him away G520 and delivered G3860 Him to Pilate G4091 the governor G2232.
3 Then G5119 when Judas G2455, who had betrayed G3860 Him, saw G3708 that He had been condemned G2632, he felt G3338 remorse G3338 and returned G4762 the [fn]thirty G5144 pieces G694 of G694 silver G694 to the chief G749 priests G749 and elders G4245, 4 saying G3004, “I have sinned G264 by betraying G3860 innocent G121 blood G129.” But they said G3004, “What G5101 is that to us? See G3708 to that yourself G4771!” 5 And he threw G4496 the pieces G694 of G694 silver G694 into the [fn]sanctuary G3485 and departed G402; and he went G565 away G565 and hanged G519 himself. 6 And the chief G749 priests G749 took G2983 the pieces G694 of G694 silver G694 and said G3004, “It is not lawful G1832 to put G906 them into the temple G2878 treasury G2878, since G1893 it is the price G5092 of blood G129.” 7 And taking G2983 counsel G4824 together G4824, they bought G59 [fn]with the money G846 the Potter’s G2763 Field G68 as a burial G5027 place G5027 for strangers G3581. 8 For this G1352 reason G1352 that field G68 has been called G2564 the Field G68 of Blood G129 to this G4594 day G4594. 9 Then G5119 that which was spoken G3004 through G1223 Jeremiah G2408 the prophet G4396 was fulfilled G4137, saying G3004, “AND [fn]THEY TOOK G2983 THE THIRTY G5144 PIECES G694 OF G694 SILVER G694, THE PRICE G5092 OF THE ONE WHOSE G3739 PRICE G5091 HAD BEEN SET G5091 by the sons G5207 of Israel G2474; 10 AND [fn]THEY GAVE G1325 THEM FOR THE POTTER’S G2763 FIELD G68, AS G2505 THE [fn]LORD G2962 DIRECTED G4929 ME.”
Jesus Before Pilate
11 Now G1161 Jesus G2424 stood G2476 before G1715 the governor G2232, and the governor G2232 questioned G1905 Him, saying G3004, “Are You the King G935 of the Jews G2453?” And Jesus G2424 said G5346 to him, “You yourself G4771 say G3004 it.”
12 And while G1722 He was being accused G2723 by the chief G749 priests G749 and elders G4245, He did not answer G611. 13 Then G5119 Pilate G4091 *said G3004 to Him, “Do You not hear G191 how G4214 many G4214 things G4214 they testify G2649 against G2649 You?” 14 And He did not answer G611 him with regard G4314 to even G3761 a single [fn]charge G4487, so G5620 the governor G2232 marveled G2296 greatly G3029.
15 Now G1161 at the feast G1859 the governor G2232 was accustomed G1486 to release G630 for the crowd G3793 any one G1520 prisoner G1198 whom G3739 they wanted G2309. 16 And at that time G5119 they were holding G2192 a notorious G1978 prisoner G1198, called G3004 Barabbas G912. 17 So G3767 when the people G846 gathered G4863 together G4863, Pilate G4091 said G3004 to them, “Whom G5101 do you want G2309 me to release G630 for you? [fn]Barabbas G912, or G2228 Jesus G2424 who is called G3004 [fn]Christ G5547?” 18 For he knew G6063 that because G1223 of envy G5355 they had delivered G3860 Him over.
19 Now while he was sitting G2521 on the judgment G968 seat G968, his wife G1135 sent G649 him a message, saying G3004, “Have nothing G3367 to do with that righteous G1342 Man G1342; for [fn]last G4594 night G4594 I suffered G3958 greatly G4183 in a dream G3677 because G1223 of Him.” 20 But the chief G749 priests G749 and the elders G4245 persuaded G3982 the crowds G3793 to ask G154 for Barabbas G912 and to put G622 Jesus G2424 to G622 death G622. 21 But the governor G2232 answered G611 and said G3004 to them, “Which G5101 of the two G1417 do you want G2309 me to release G630 for you?” And they said G3004, “Barabbas G912.” 22 Pilate G4091 *said G3004 to them, “Then G3767, what G5101 shall I do G4160 with Jesus G2424 who is called G3004 [fn]Christ G5547?” They all G3956 *said G3004, “Let Him be crucified G4717!” 23 And he said G5346, “Why G1063, what G5101 evil G2556 did He do G4160?” But they were crying out G2896 all G4057 the G4057 more G4057, saying G3004, “Let Him be crucified G4717!”
24 Now when Pilate G4091 saw G3708 that he was accomplishing G5623 nothing G3762, but rather G3123 that a riot G2351 was starting G1096, he took G2983 water G5204 and washed G633 his hands G5495 in G2713 front G2713 of G2713 the crowd G3793, saying G3004, “I am G1510 innocent G121 of this G3778 man’s G3778 blood G129; see G3708 to that yourselves G4771.” 25 And all G3956 the people G2992 answered G611 and said G3004, “His blood G129 be on us and on our children G5043!” 26 Then G5119 he released G630 Barabbas G912 [fn]for them; but after having Jesus G2424 scourged G5417, he delivered G3860 Him over to be crucified G4717.
Jesus Is Mocked
27 Then G5119 when the soldiers G4757 of the governor G2232 took G3880 Jesus G2424 into the [fn]Praetorium G4232, they gathered G4863 the whole G3650 Roman [fn]cohort G4686 around G1909 Him.
28 And they stripped G1562 Him and put G4060 a scarlet G2847 robe G5511 on Him. 29 And after twisting G4120 together a crown G4735 of thorns G173, they put G2007 it on His head G2776, and a [fn]reed G2563 in His right G1188 hand G1188; and they knelt G1120 down G1120 before G1715 Him and mocked G1702 Him, saying G3004, “Hail G5463, King G935 of the Jews G2453!” 30 And they spat G1716 on Him, and took G2983 the reed G2563 and began to beat G5180 Him on the head G2776. 31 When G3753 they had mocked G1702 Him, they took G1562 the scarlet robe G5511 off G1562 Him and put G1746 His own garments G2440 back on Him, and led G520 Him away G520 to crucify G4717 Him.
32 And as they were coming G1831 out G1831, they found G2147 a man G444 of G2956 Cyrene G2956 named G3686 Simon G4613, [fn]whom G3778 they pressed G29 into service G29 to bear G142 His cross G4716.
The Crucifixion
33 And when they came G2064 to a place G5117 called G3004 Golgotha G1115, which G3739 means G3004 Place G5117 of a Skull G2898,
34 they gave G1325 Him wine G3631 to drink G4095 mixed G3396 with gall G5521; and after tasting G1089 it, He did not want G3756 G2309 to drink G4095.
35 And when they had crucified G4717 Him, they divided G1266 up G1266 His garments G2440 among G1266 themselves by casting G906 [fn]lots G2819. 36 And sitting G2521 down G2521, they began to keep G5083 watch G5083 over G5083 Him there G1563. 37 And above G1883 His head G2776 they put G2007 up G2007 the charge G156 against G156 Him [fn]which read G1125, “THIS G3778 IS JESUS G2424 THE KING G935 OF THE JEWS G2453.”
38 At that time G5119 two G1417 robbers G3027 *were crucified G4717 with Him, one G1520 on the right G1188 and one G1520 on the left G2176. 39 And those G3588 passing G3899 by were blaspheming G987 Him, shaking G2795 their heads G2776 40 and saying G3004, “You who are going to destroy G2647 the sanctuary G3485 and rebuild G3618 it in three G5140 days G2250, save G4982 Yourself G4572! If G1487 You are the Son G5207 of God G2316, come G2597 down G2597 from the cross G4716.” 41 In the same G3668 way G3668 the chief G749 priests G749 also G2532, along with the scribes G1122 and elders G4245, were mocking G1702 Him and saying G3004, 42 “He saved G4982 others G243; [fn]He cannot G1410 G3756 save G4982 Himself G1438. He is the King G935 of Israel G2474; let Him now G3568 come G2597 down G2597 from the cross G4716, and we will believe G4100 in Him. 43 HE TRUSTS G3982 IN GOD G2316; LET GOD G2316 RESCUE G4506 Him now G3568, IF G1487 HE [fn]DELIGHTS G2309 IN HIM; for He said G3004, ‘I am G1510 the Son G5207 of God G2316.’” 44 And the robbers G3027 who had been crucified G4957 with Him were also G2532 insulting G3679 Him with the same G846 words.
45 Now G1161 from the [fn]sixth G1623 hour G5610 darkness G4655 [fn]fell G1096 upon all G3956 the land G1093 until G2193 the [fn]ninth G1766 hour G5610. 46 And about G4012 the ninth G1766 hour G5610 Jesus G2424 cried G310 out G310 with a loud G3173 voice G5456, saying G3004, “ELI G2241, ELI G2241, LAMA G2982 SABACHTHANI G4518?” that is, “MY GOD G2316, MY GOD G2316, WHY G2444 HAVE YOU FORSAKEN G1459 ME?” 47 And some G5100 of those G3588 who were standing G2476 there G1563, when they heard G191 it, began saying G3004, “This G3778 man G3778 is calling G5455 for Elijah G2243.” 48 And immediately G2112 one G1520 of them ran G5143, and taking G2983 a sponge G4699, he filled G4130 it with sour G3690 wine G3690 and put G4060 it on a reed G2563, and gave G4222 Him a G4222 drink G4222. 49 But the rest G3062 of them were saying G3004, “[fn]Let G863 us see G3708 whether G1487 Elijah G2243 will come G2064 to save G4982 Him[fn].” 50 And Jesus G2424 cried G2896 out G2896 again G3825 with a loud G3173 voice G5456, and yielded G863 up G863 His spirit G4151. 51 And behold G2400, the [fn]veil G2665 of the sanctuary G3485 was torn G4977 in two G1417 from top G509 to bottom G2736; and the earth G1093 shook G4579 and the rocks G4073 were split G4977. 52 And the tombs G3419 were opened G455, and many G4183 bodies G4983 of the [fn]saints G40 who had fallen G2837 asleep G2837 were raised G1453; 53 and coming G1831 out G1831 of the tombs G3419 after G3326 His resurrection G1454 they entered G1525 the holy G40 city G4172 and appeared G1718 to many G4183. 54 Now G1161 the centurion G1543, and those G3588 who were with him keeping G5083 guard G5083 over G5083 Jesus G2424, when they saw G3708 the earthquake G4578 and the things that were happening G1096, became G5399 very G4970 frightened G5399 and said G3004, “Truly G230 this G3778 was God’s Son G2316!”
55 And many G4183 women G1135 were there G1563 looking G2334 on from a distance G3113, who G3748 had followed G190 Jesus G2424 from Galilee G1056 while [fn]ministering G1247 to G1247 Him. 56 Among G1722 them was Mary G3137 Magdalene G3094, and Mary G3137 the mother G3384 of James G2385 and Joseph G2501, and the mother G3384 of the sons G5207 of Zebedee G2199.
Jesus Is Buried
57 Now when it was evening G3798, there came G2064 a rich G4145 man G444 from Arimathea G707, named G5122 Joseph G2501, who G3739 himself G846 had also G2532 become G3100 a G3100 disciple G3100 of Jesus G2424.
58 This G3778 man G3778 went G4334 to Pilate G4091 and asked G154 for the body G4983 of Jesus G2424. Then G5119 Pilate G4091 ordered G2753 it to be given G591 to him. 59 And Joseph G2501 took G2983 the body G4983 and wrapped G1794 it in a clean G2513 linen G4616 cloth G4616, 60 and laid G5087 it in his own new G2537 tomb G3419, which G3739 he had hewn G2998 out G2998 in the rock G4073; and he rolled G4351 a large G3173 stone G3037 against the entrance G2374 of the tomb G3419 and went G565 away G565. 61 And Mary G3137 Magdalene G3094 was there G1563, and the other G243 Mary G3137, sitting G2521 opposite G561 the grave G5028.
62 Now G1161 on the next G1887 day G1887, [fn]the day G1887 after G3326 the [fn]Preparation G3904, the chief G749 priests G749 and the Pharisees G5330 gathered G4863 together G4863 with Pilate G4091, 63 and said G3004, “Sir G2962, we remember G3403 that when He was G2198 still G2089 alive G2198 that deceiver G4108 said G3004, ‘After G3326 three G5140 days G2250 I am to rise G1453 again G1453.’ 64 Therefore G3767, order G2753 for the grave G5028 to be made G805 secure G805 until G2193 the third G5154 day G2250, lest G3379 His disciples G3101 come G2064 and steal G2813 Him away G2813 and say G3004 to the people G2992, ‘He has risen G1453 from the dead G3498,’ and the last G2078 deception G4106 will be worse G5501 than the first G4413.” 65 Pilate G4091 said G5346 to them, “You have G2192 a guard G2892; go G5217, make G805 it as secure G805 as you know G6063 how G6063.” 66 And they went G4198 and made G805 the grave G5028 secure G805, and along with the guard G2892 they set G4972 a seal G4972 on the stone G3037.
