Abraham and David’s Faith Counted as Righteousness

1 What ^G5101 then ^G3767 shall we say ^G3004 that Abraham ^G11, [fn]our forefather ^G6074 according ^G2596 to the flesh ^G4561, has found ^G2147?

2 For if ^G1487 Abraham ^G11 was justified ^G1344 [fn]by works ^G2041, he has ^G2192 something ^G2745 to ^G2745 boast ^G2745 about ^G2745—but not [fn]before ^G4314 God ^G2316! 3 For what ^G5101 does the Scripture ^G1124 say ^G3004? “ABRAHAM ^G11 BELIEVED ^G4100 GOD ^G2316, AND IT WAS COUNTED ^G3049 TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS ^G1343.” 4 Now ^G1161 to the one who works ^G2038, his wage ^G3408 is not counted ^G3049 according to grace ^G5485, but according to what ^G3783 is ^G3783 due ^G3783. 5 But to the one who does not work ^G2038, but believes ^G4100 upon Him who justifies ^G1344 the ungodly ^G765, his faith ^G4102 is counted ^G3049 as righteousness ^G1343, 6 just ^G2509 as ^G2509 David ^G1138 also ^G2532 speaks ^G3004 of the blessing ^G3108 on the man ^G444 to whom ^G3739 God ^G2316 counts ^G3049 righteousness ^G1343 apart ^G5565 from works ^G2041:

7 “BLESSED ^G3107 ARE THOSE WHOSE ^G3739 LAWLESS ^G458 DEEDS ^G458 HAVE BEEN FORGIVEN ^G863,

AND WHOSE ^G3739 SINS ^G266 HAVE BEEN COVERED ^G1943.

8 “BLESSED ^G3107 IS THE MAN ^G435 WHOSE ^G3739 SIN ^G266 THE [fn]LORD ^G2962 WILL NOT TAKE ^G3049 INTO ^G3049 ACCOUNT ^G3049.”

9 Therefore ^G3767, is this ^G3778 blessing ^G3108 on [fn]the circumcised ^G4061, or ^G2228 on [fn]the uncircumcised ^G203 also ^G2532? For we say ^G3004, “FAITH ^G4102 WAS COUNTED ^G3049 TO ABRAHAM ^G11 AS RIGHTEOUSNESS ^G1343.” 10 How ^G4459 then ^G3767 was it counted ^G3049? While he was [fn]circumcised ^G4061, or ^G2228 [fn]uncircumcised ^G203? Not while [fn]circumcised ^G4061, but while [fn]uncircumcised ^G203; 11 and he received ^G2983 the sign ^G4592 of circumcision ^G4061, a seal ^G4973 of the righteousness ^G1343 of the faith ^G4102 which [fn]he had while uncircumcised ^G203, so ^G1519 that he might be the father ^G3962 of all ^G3956 who believe ^G4100 without ^G203 being ^G203 circumcised ^G203, that righteousness ^G1343 might be counted ^G3049 to them, 12 and the father ^G3962 of circumcision ^G4061 to those ^G3588 who not only ^G3440 are of the circumcision ^G4061, but who also ^G2532 follow ^G4748 in the steps ^G2487 of the faith ^G4102 of our father ^G3962 Abraham ^G11 which [fn]he had while uncircumcised ^G203.

13 For the promise ^G1860 to Abraham ^G11 or ^G2228 to his seed ^G4690 that he would be heir ^G2818 of the world ^G2889 was not [fn]through ^G1223 the Law ^G3551, but through ^G1223 the righteousness ^G1343 of faith ^G4102. 14 For if ^G1487 those ^G3588 who are [fn]of the Law ^G3551 are heirs ^G2818, faith ^G4102 has been made ^G2758 empty ^G2758 and the promise ^G1860 has been abolished ^G2673; 15 for the Law ^G3551 brings ^G2716 about ^G2716 wrath ^G3709, but where ^G3757 there is no ^G3756 law ^G3551, there also is no ^G3756 trespass ^G3847.

16 For this ^G3778 reason ^G1223 it is [fn]by faith ^G4102, in ^G2443 order ^G2443 that ^G2443 it may be according ^G2596 to ^G2596 grace ^G5485, so ^G1519 that the promise ^G1860 will be guaranteed ^G949 to all ^G3956 the seed ^G4690, not only ^G3440 to [fn]those ^G3588 who are of the Law ^G3551, but also ^G2532 to [fn]those ^G3588 who are of the faith ^G4102 of Abraham ^G11, who ^G3739 is the father ^G3962 of us all ^G3956— 17 as it is written ^G1125, “A FATHER ^G3962 OF MANY ^G4183 NATIONS ^G1484 HAVE I MADE ^G5087 YOU”—in ^G2713 the ^G2713 presence ^G2713 of Him whom ^G3739 he believed ^G4100, even God ^G2316, who gives ^G2227 life ^G2227 to ^G2227 the dead ^G3498 and [fn]calls ^G2564 into being ^G1510 that which does not exist ^G1510. 18 In hope ^G1680 against ^G1909 hope ^G1680 he believed ^G4100, so ^G3779 that he might become ^G1096 a father ^G3962 of many ^G4183 nations ^G1484 according ^G2596 to that which had been spoken ^G3004, “SO ^G3779 SHALL YOUR SEED ^G4690 BE.” 19 And without ^G3361 becoming ^G770 weak ^G770 in faith ^G4102 he contemplated ^G2657 his own ^G1438 body ^G4983, now as good as dead ^G3499 since he was about ^G4225 a hundred ^G1541 years ^G1541 old ^G1541, and the deadness ^G3500 of Sarah’s ^G4564 womb ^G3388; 20 yet ^G1161, with respect ^G1519 to the promise ^G1860 of God ^G2316, he did not waver ^G1252 in unbelief ^G570 but grew ^G1743 strong ^G1743 in faith ^G4102, giving ^G1325 glory ^G1391 to God ^G2316, 21 and being fully ^G4135 assured ^G4135 that what ^G3739 God had promised ^G1861, He was able ^G1415 also ^G2532 to do ^G2038. 22 Therefore ^G1352 IT WAS ALSO ^G2532 COUNTED ^G3049 TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS ^G1343. 23 Now ^G1161 not for his sake ^G1223 only ^G3440 was it written ^G1125 THAT IT WAS COUNTED ^G3049 TO HIM, 24 but for our sake ^G1223 also ^G2532, to whom ^G3739 it will ^G3195 be counted ^G3049, as those ^G3588 who believe ^G4100 upon Him who raised ^G1453 Jesus ^G2424 our Lord ^G2962 from the dead ^G3498, 25 He who ^G3739 was delivered ^G3860 over on ^G1223 account ^G1223 of ^G1223 our transgressions ^G3900, and was raised ^G1453 on ^G1223 account ^G1223 of ^G1223 our justification ^G1347.
