Cornelius’ and Peter’s Visions

1 Now ^G1161 there was a man ^G435 at Caesarea ^G2542 named ^G3686 Cornelius ^G2883, a centurion ^G1543 of what was called ^G2564 the Italian ^G2483 [fn]cohort ^G4686,

2 a devout ^G2152 man ^G2152 and one who feared ^G5399 God ^G2316 with all ^G3956 his household ^G3624, and gave ^G4160 many ^G4183 [fn]alms ^G1654 to the people ^G2992 and prayed ^G1189 to God ^G2316 continually ^G1223 G3956. 3 About ^G5616 G4012 the [fn]ninth ^G1766 hour ^G5610 of the day ^G2250 he clearly ^G5320 saw ^G3708 in a vision ^G3705 an angel ^G32 of God ^G2316 who had come ^G1525 in ^G1525 and said ^G3004 to him, “Cornelius ^G2883!” 4 And looking ^G816 intently ^G816 on him and becoming ^G1096 afraid ^G1719, he said ^G3004, “What ^G5101 is it, Lord ^G2962?” And he said ^G3004 to him, “Your prayers ^G4335 and [fn]alms ^G1654 have ascended ^G305 as a memorial ^G3422 before ^G1715 God ^G2316. 5 Now ^G3568 send ^G3992 some men ^G435 to Joppa ^G2445 and summon ^G3343 a man ^G5100 named Simon ^G4613, who ^G3739 is also called ^G1941 Peter ^G4074; 6 he is lodging ^G3579 with a tanner ^G1038 named Simon ^G4613, whose ^G3739 house ^G3614 is by the sea ^G2281.” 7 And when ^G5613 the angel ^G32 who was speaking ^G2980 to him had left ^G565, he called ^G5455 two ^G1417 of his servants ^G3610 and a devout ^G2152 soldier ^G4757 of those ^G3588 who were his personal ^G4342 attendants ^G4342, 8 and after he explained ^G1834 everything ^G537 to them, he sent ^G649 them to Joppa ^G2445.

9 And on the next ^G1887 day ^G1887, as they were on their way ^G3596 and approaching ^G1448 the city ^G4172, Peter ^G4074 went ^G305 up ^G305 on the housetop ^G1430 about ^G4012 the [fn]sixth ^G1623 hour ^G5610 to pray ^G4336. 10 But he became ^G1096 hungry ^G4361 and was desiring ^G2309 to eat ^G1089. And while they were making ^G3903 preparations ^G3903, he fell ^G1096 into a trance ^G1611 11 and *saw ^G2334 heaven ^G3772 opened ^G455 up ^G455, and [fn]an object ^G4632 like ^G5613 a great ^G3173 sheet ^G3607 coming ^G2597 down ^G2524, lowered ^G2524 by four ^G5064 corners ^G746 to the ground ^G1093, 12 and there were in it all ^G3956 kinds of four-footed ^G5074 animals ^G5074 and crawling ^G2062 creatures ^G2062 of the earth ^G1093 and birds ^G4071 of the [fn]sky ^G3772. 13 And a voice ^G5456 came ^G1096 to him, “Rise ^G450 up ^G450, Peter ^G4074, [fn]slaughter ^G2380 and eat ^G2068!” 14 But Peter ^G4074 said ^G3004, “By no ^G3365 means ^G3365, Lord ^G2962, for I have never ^G3763 eaten ^G2068 anything ^G3956 defiled ^G2839 and unclean ^G169.” 15 Again ^G3825 a voice ^G5456 came to him a second ^G1208 time ^G1208, “What ^G3739 God ^G2316 has cleansed ^G2511, no ^G3361 longer consider ^G2840 defiled ^G2839.” 16 And this ^G3778 happened ^G1096 three ^G5151 times ^G5151 and immediately ^G2117 the [fn]object ^G4632 was taken ^G353 up ^G353 into heaven ^G3772.

17 Now ^G1161 while ^G5613 Peter ^G4074 was greatly ^G1280 perplexed ^G1280 in [fn]mind ^G1438 as to what ^G5101 the vision ^G3705 which ^G3739 he had seen ^G3708 might be, behold ^G2400, the men ^G435 who had been sent ^G649 by Cornelius ^G2883, having asked ^G1331 directions ^G1331 for Simon’s ^G4613 house ^G3614, appeared ^G2186 at the gate ^G4440; 18 and calling ^G5455 out, they were asking ^G4441 whether ^G1487 Simon ^G4613, who was also called ^G1941 Peter ^G4074, was lodging ^G3579 there ^G1759. 19 And while Peter ^G4074 was reflecting ^G6018 on the vision ^G3705, the Spirit ^G4151 said ^G3004 to him, “Behold ^G2400, [fn]three ^G5140 men ^G435 are looking ^G2212 for ^G2212 you. 20 But rise ^G450 up ^G450, go ^G2597 down ^G2597 and accompany ^G4198 G4862 them without ^G3367 taking ^G1252 issue ^G1252 at ^G1252 all ^G1252, for I have sent ^G649 them Myself ^G1473.” 21 And Peter ^G4074 went ^G2597 down ^G2597 to the men ^G435 and said ^G3004, “Behold ^G2400, I am ^G1510 the one you are looking ^G2212 for ^G2212; what ^G5101 is the reason ^G156 for which ^G3739 you have come ^G3918?” 22 And they said ^G3004, “Cornelius ^G2883, a centurion ^G1543, a righteous ^G1342 and God-fearing ^G2316 man ^G435 well ^G3140 spoken ^G3140 of by the entire ^G3650 nation ^G1484 of the Jews ^G2453, was directed ^G5537 by a holy ^G40 angel ^G32 to summon ^G3343 you to his house ^G3624 and hear ^G191 [fn]a message ^G4487 from you.” 23 So ^G3767 he invited ^G1528 them in ^G1528 and gave ^G3579 them lodging ^G3579.

And on the next ^G1887 day ^G1887 he rose ^G450 up ^G450 and went ^G1831 away ^G1831 with them, and some ^G5100 of the brothers ^G80 from Joppa ^G2445 went ^G4905 with him. 24 And on the following ^G1887 day ^G1887 he entered ^G1525 Caesarea ^G2542. Now ^G1161 Cornelius ^G2883 was waiting ^G4327 for them and had called ^G4779 together ^G4779 his relatives ^G4773 and close ^G316 friends ^G5384. 25 And when ^G5613 Peter ^G4074 entered ^G1525, Cornelius ^G2883 met ^G4876 him, and fell ^G4098 at his feet ^G4228 and [fn]worshiped ^G4352 him. 26 But Peter ^G4074 raised ^G1453 him up ^G1453, saying ^G3004, “Stand ^G450 up ^G450; I too ^G2532 am ^G1510 just a man ^G444.” 27 As he talked ^G4926 with him, he entered ^G1525 and *found ^G2147 many ^G4183 people ^G4183 assembled ^G4905. 28 And he said ^G5346 to them, “You yourselves ^G4771 know ^G1987 how ^G5613 unlawful ^G111 it is for a man ^G435 who is a Jew ^G2453 to associate ^G2853 with a foreigner ^G246 or ^G2228 to visit ^G4334 him; and yet God ^G2316 has shown ^G1166 me that I should not call ^G3004 any ^G3367 man ^G444 defiled ^G2839 or ^G2228 unclean ^G169. 29 That is why ^G1352 I came ^G2064 without ^G369 even ^G2532 raising ^G369 any objection ^G369 when I was summoned ^G3343. So ^G3767 I ask ^G4441 for what ^G5101 reason ^G3056 you have summoned ^G3343 me.”

30 And Cornelius ^G2883 said ^G5346, “Four ^G5067 days ^G2250 ago ^G575 to this ^G3778 hour ^G5610, I was praying ^G4336 in my house ^G3624 during the [fn]ninth ^G1766 hour ^G1766; and behold ^G2400, a man ^G435 stood ^G2476 before ^G1799 me in ^G1799 shining ^G2986 garments ^G2066, 31 and he *said ^G5346, ‘Cornelius ^G2883, your prayer ^G4335 has been heard ^G1522 and your [fn]alms ^G1654 have been remembered ^G3403 before ^G1799 God ^G2316. 32 Therefore ^G3767 send ^G3992 to Joppa ^G2445 and invite ^G3333 Simon ^G4613, who ^G3739 is also called ^G1941 Peter ^G4074, to come to you; he is lodging ^G3579 at the house ^G3614 of Simon ^G4613 the tanner ^G1038 by the sea ^G2281.’ 33 So ^G3767 I sent ^G3992 for you immediately ^G1824, and you have [fn]been kind ^G2573 enough ^G2573 to come ^G3854. Now ^G3568 then ^G3767, we are all ^G3956 here ^G3918 present ^G3918 before ^G1799 God ^G2316 to hear ^G191 all ^G3956 that you have been ordered ^G4367 by the Lord ^G2962.”

The Holy Spirit Poured Out on the Gentiles

34 And opening ^G455 his mouth ^G4750, Peter ^G4074 said ^G3004:

“I most ^G225 truly ^G1909 G225 comprehend ^G2638 now that God ^G2316 is not one ^G4381 to ^G4381 show ^G4381 partiality ^G4381,

35 but in every ^G3956 nation ^G1484 the one who [fn]fears ^G5399 Him and does ^G2038 righteousness ^G1343 is welcome ^G1184 to Him. 36 As for the word ^G3056 which ^G3739 He sent ^G649 to the sons ^G5207 of Israel ^G2474, proclaiming ^G2097 the good ^G2097 news ^G2097 of peace ^G1515 through ^G1223 Jesus ^G2424 Christ ^G5547—He is Lord ^G2962 of all ^G3956— 37 you yourselves ^G4771 know ^G6063 the thing ^G4487 which happened ^G1096 throughout ^G2596 all ^G3650 Judea ^G2449, starting ^G757 from Galilee ^G1056, after ^G3326 the baptism ^G908 which ^G3739 John ^G2491 proclaimed ^G2784. 38 [fn]You know of Jesus ^G2424 of Nazareth ^G3478, how ^G5613 God ^G2316 anointed ^G5548 Him with the Holy ^G40 Spirit ^G4151 and with power ^G1411, [fn]and how He went ^G1330 about ^G1330 doing ^G2109 good ^G2109 and healing ^G2390 all ^G3956 who were oppressed ^G2616 by the devil ^G1228, for God ^G2316 was with Him. 39 And we are witnesses ^G3144 of all ^G3956 the things ^G3956 He did ^G4160 both ^G5037 in the [fn]land ^G5561 of the Jews ^G2453 and in Jerusalem ^G2419. They also ^G2532 put ^G337 Him to ^G337 death ^G337 by hanging ^G2910 Him on a tree ^G3586. 40 God ^G2316 raised ^G1453 Him up ^G1453 on the third ^G5154 day ^G2250 and granted ^G1325 that He appear ^G1717, 41 not to all ^G3956 the people ^G2992, but to witnesses ^G3144 who were chosen ^G4401 beforehand ^G4401 by God ^G2316, that is, to us who ^G3748 ate ^G4906 and drank ^G4844 with Him after ^G3326 He arose ^G450 from the dead ^G3498. 42 And He commanded ^G3853 us to [fn]preach ^G2784 to the people ^G2992, and solemnly ^G1263 to bear ^G1263 witness ^G1263 that this ^G3778 is the One who has been designated ^G3724 by God ^G2316 as Judge ^G2923 of the living ^G2198 and the dead ^G3498. 43 Of Him all ^G3956 the prophets ^G4396 bear ^G3140 witness ^G3140 that through ^G1223 His name ^G3686 everyone ^G3956 who believes ^G4100 in Him receives ^G2983 forgiveness ^G859 of sins ^G266.”

44 While Peter ^G4074 was still ^G2089 speaking ^G2980 these ^G3778 things ^G4487, the Holy ^G40 Spirit ^G4151 fell ^G1968 upon all ^G3956 those ^G3588 who were listening ^G191 to the word ^G3056. 45 And all ^G3745 the [fn]circumcised ^G4061 believers ^G4103 who ^G3745 came ^G4905 with Peter ^G4074 were astounded ^G1839 that ^G3754 the gift ^G1431 of the Holy ^G40 Spirit ^G4151 had been poured ^G1632 out ^G1632 on the Gentiles ^G1484 also ^G2532. 46 For they were hearing ^G191 them speaking ^G2980 with tongues ^G1100 and magnifying ^G3170 God ^G2316. Then ^G5119 Peter ^G4074 answered ^G611, 47 “Can ^G1410 anyone ^G5100 refuse ^G2967 water ^G5204 for these ^G3778 to be baptized ^G907 who ^G3748 have received ^G2983 the Holy ^G40 Spirit ^G4151 just ^G5613 G2532 as ^G5613 we did?” 48 And he ordered ^G4367 them to be baptized ^G907 in the name ^G3686 of Jesus ^G2424 Christ ^G5547. Then ^G5119 they asked ^G2065 him to remain ^G1961 for a few ^G5100 days ^G2250.
