Paul Is Sent to Rome
1 Now when G5613 it was decided G2919 that we would sail G636 for Italy G2482, they proceeded to deliver G3860 Paul G3972 and some G5100 other G2087 prisoners G1202 to a centurion G1543 of the Augustan G4575 [fn]cohort G4686 named G3686 Julius G2457.
2 And getting aboard G1910 an Adramyttian G98 ship G4143, which was G3195 about G3195 to G3195 sail G4126 to the regions G5117 along G2596 the coast G2596 of [fn]Asia G773, we set G321 sail G321 accompanied G1510 G4862 by Aristarchus G708, a Macedonian G3110 of Thessalonica G2331. 3 The next G2087 day we put G2609 in G2609 at Sidon G4605, and Julius G2457 treated G5530 Paul G3972 with consideration G5364 and allowed G2010 him to go G4198 to his friends G5384 and receive G5177 care G1958. 4 And from G2547 there G2547 we set G321 sail G321 and sailed G5284 under G5284 the shelter G5284 of Cyprus G2954 because G1223 the winds G417 were against G1727 us. 5 And when we had sailed G1277 through G1277 the sea G3989 along G2596 the G2596 coast G2596 of Cilicia G2791 and Pamphylia G3828, we landed G2718 at Myra G3460 in Lycia G3073. 6 There G2546 the centurion G1543 found G2147 an Alexandrian G222 ship G4143 sailing G4126 for Italy G2482, and he put G1688 us aboard G1688 it. 7 And when we had sailed G1020 slowly G1020 for a good G2425 many G2425 days G2250, and with difficulty G3433 had arrived G1096 off G2596 Cnidus G2834, since the wind G417 did not permit G4330 us to go farther G4330, we sailed G5284 under G5284 the shelter G5284 of Crete G2914, off G2596 Salmone G4534; 8 and with difficulty G3433, we sailed G3881 past G3881 it and came G2064 to a place G5117 called G2564 Fair G2568 Havens G2568, near G1451 which G3739 was the city G4172 of Lasea G2996.
9 And when considerable G2425 time G5550 had passed G1230 and the voyage G4144 was now G2235 dangerous G2000, since G1223 even G2532 the [fn]Fast G3521 was already G2235 over G3928, Paul G3972 began to advise G3867 them, 10 and said G3004 to them, “Men G435, I perceive G2334 that the voyage G4144 will G3195 certainly G3195 be with damage G5196 and great G4183 loss G2209, not only G3440 of the cargo G5413 and the ship G4143, but also G2532 of our lives G5590.” 11 But the centurion G1543 was being more G3123 persuaded G3982 by the pilot G2942 and the [fn]captain G3490 of G3490 the G3490 ship G3490 than G2228 by what was being said G3004 by Paul G3972. 12 And because the harbor G3040 was not G428 suitable G428 for wintering G3915, the majority G4183 reached G5087 a decision G1012 to set G321 sail G321 from G1564 there G1564, if G1487 somehow G4458 they could G1410 arrive G2658 at Phoenix G5405, a harbor G3040 of Crete G2914 facing G991 southwest G3047 and northwest G5566, to spend G3914 the G3914 winter G3914 there.
13 And when a moderate G5285 [fn]south G3558 wind G3558 came G5285 up G5285, thinking G1380 that they had attained G2902 their purpose G4286, they weighed G142 anchor G142 and began sailing G3881 along G3881 [fn]the shore G788 of Crete G2914.
The Storm at Sea
14 But before G3326 G3756 very G4183 long G4183 there rushed G906 down G2596 from [fn]the land a violent G5189 wind G417, called G2564 [fn]Euraquilo G2148; 15 and when the ship G4143 was caught G4884 in it and could G1410 not face G503 the wind G417, we gave G1929 way G1929 to it and let ourselves be carried G5342 along. 16 And running G5295 under G5295 the G5295 shelter G5295 of a small G3519 island G3519 called G2564 Clauda G2802, we were G2480 scarcely G3433 able G2480 to get G1096 the ship’s [fn]boat G4627 under G4031 control G4031. 17 After they had hoisted G142 it up G142, they used G5530 [fn]supporting G996 cables G996 in undergirding G5269 the ship G4143. Fearing G5399 that they might run G1601 aground G1601 on the shallows of Syrtis G4950, they let G5465 down G5465 the [fn]sea G4632 anchor G4632 and in G3779 this G3779 way G3779 let themselves be carried G5342 along. 18 And the next G1836 day as we were being violently G4971 storm-tossed G5492, [fn]they began to jettison G1546 the G1546 cargo G1546; 19 and on the third G5154 day they cast G4496 the ship’s G4143 tackle G4631 overboard with their own G849 hands G849. 20 And since neither G3383 sun G2246 nor G3383 stars G798 appeared G2014 for many G4183 days G2250, and no G3756 small G3641 storm G5494 was assailing G1945 us, from then G3062 on all G3956 hope G1680 of our being saved G4982 was gradually abandoned G4014.
21 And [fn]when they had gone G5225 a long G4183 time G776 without G776 food G776, then G5119 Paul G3972 stood G2476 up in their midst G3319 and said G3004, “Men G435, you ought G1163 to have [fn]followed G3980 my advice G3980 to not set G321 sail G321 from Crete G2914 and to [fn]avoid G2770 this G3778 damage G5196 and loss G2209. 22 And now G3568 I advise G3867 you to be G2114 cheerful G2114, for there will be no G3762 loss G580 of life G5590 among G1537 you, but only of the ship G4143. 23 For this G3778 very night G3571 an angel G32 of the God G2316 to whom G3739 I belong G1510 and whom G3739 I serve G3000 stood G3936 before G3936 me, 24 saying G3004, ‘Do not be G5399 afraid G5399, Paul G3972; you must G1163 stand G3936 before G3936 Caesar G2541; and behold G2400, God G2316 has granted G5483 you all G3956 those G3588 who are sailing G4126 with you.’ 25 Therefore G1352, be G2114 cheerful G2114, men G435, for I believe G4100 God G2316 that [fn]it will turn G1510 out G1510 exactly G3779 G2596 G5158 as I have been told G2980. 26 But we must G1163 run G1601 aground G1601 on some G5100 island G3520.”
27 But when G5613 the fourteenth G5065 night G3571 came G1096, as we were being carried G1308 about G1308 in the Adriatic G99 Sea, about G2596 midnight G3319 G3571 the sailors G3492 began to suspect G5282 that some G5100 land G5561 was approaching G4317 them. 28 And when they took G1001 soundings G1001, they found G2147 it to be [fn]twenty G1501 fathoms G3712; and a little G1024 farther G1339 on they took G1001 another G3825 sounding G1001 and found G2147 it to be [fn]fifteen G1178 fathoms G3712. 29 And fearing G5399 that we might run G1601 aground G1601 somewhere G4225 on the [fn]rocks G5138, they cast G4496 four G5064 anchors G45 from the stern G4403 and were praying G2172 for daybreak G2250. 30 But as the sailors G3492 were trying G2212 to escape G5343 from the ship G4143 and had let G5465 down G5465 the ship’s boat G4627 into the sea G2281, on the pretense G4392 of intending G3195 to G3195 lay G1614 out G1614 anchors G45 from the bow G4408, 31 Paul G3972 said G3004 to the centurion G1543 and to the soldiers G4757, “Unless G1437 G3361 these G3778 men G3778 remain G3306 in the ship G4143, you yourselves G4771 cannot G1410 G3756 [fn]be saved G4982.” 32 Then G5119 the soldiers G4757 cut G609 away G609 the ropes G4979 of the ship’s boat G4627 and let G1439 it fall G1601 away G1601.
33 Until G891 the day G2250 was G3195 about G3195 to G3195 dawn G1096, Paul G3972 was encouraging G3870 them all G537 to take G3335 some food G5160, saying G3004, “Today G4594 is the fourteenth G5065 day G2250 that you have been constantly G1300 watching G4328 and going without G777 eating G777, having taken G4355 nothing G3367. 34 Therefore G1352 I encourage G3870 you to take G3335 some food G5160, for this G3778 is for your [fn]salvation G4991, for not a hair G2359 from the head G2776 of any G3762 of you will perish G622.” 35 And having said G3004 these things G3778, he took G2983 bread G740 and gave G2168 thanks G2168 to God G2316 in G1799 the G1799 presence G1799 of G1799 all G3956. And he broke G2806 it and began G757 to eat G2068. 36 And all G3956 of them became cheerful G2115 and they themselves G846 also took G4355 food G5160. 37 And all G3956 of us in the ship G4143 were 276 G1250 G1440 G1803 [fn]persons G5590. 38 And when they had eaten G2880 enough G2880 G5160, they began to lighten G2893 the ship G4143 by throwing G1544 out G1544 the wheat G4621 into the sea G2281.
The Shipwreck
39 Now when G3753 day G2250 came G1096, they [fn]could not recognize G1921 the land G1093; but they were noticing G2657 a bay G2859 with a beach G123, and they were resolving G1011 to drive G1856 the ship G4143 onto G1856 it if G1487 they could G1410.
40 And casting G4014 off G4014 the anchors G45, they left G1439 them in the sea G2281 while at the same G260 time G260 they were loosening G447 the ropes G2202 of the rudders G4079. And hoisting G1869 the foresail G736 to the wind G4154, they were heading G2722 for the beach G123. 41 But striking G4045 a [fn]reef G5117 where G1337 two G1337 seas G1337 met G1337, they ran G2027 the vessel G3491 aground G2027; and the bow G4408 stuck G2043 fast G2043 and remained G3306 immovable G761, but the stern G4403 began to be broken G3089 up G3089 by the force G970 of the waves. 42 Now the soldiers’ G4757 plan G1012 was to kill G615 the prisoners G1202, so that none G3361 G5100 of them would swim G1579 away G1579 and escape G1309; 43 but the centurion G1543, wanting G1014 to bring G1295 Paul G3972 safely G1295 through G1295, kept G2967 them from their intention G1013, and ordered G2753 that those G3588 who could G1410 swim G2860 should [fn]jump G641 overboard G641 first G4413 and get G1826 to land G1093, 44 and the rest G3062 should follow, some G3739 G3303 on planks G4548, and others G3739 G1161 on various G5100 things G5100 from the ship G4143. And so G3779 it happened G1096 that they all G3956 were brought G1295 safely G1295 to land G1093.
