Remember Your Creator in Your Youth
1 Remember H2142 also your Creator H1254 in the days H3117 of your youth H979, before H5704 H834 H3808 the evil H7451 days H3117 happen H935 and the years H8141 draw H5060 near H5060 in H935 which H834 you will say H559, “I have H369 no H369 delight H2656 in them”;
2 before H5704 H834 H3808 the sun H8121 and the light H216, the moon H3394 and the stars H3556 are darkened H2821, and clouds H5645 return H7725 after H310 the rain H1653; 3 in the day H3117 that the watchmen H8104 of the house H1004 tremble H2111, and valiant H2428 men H376 bend H5791 down H5791, the grinding H2912 ones stand H988 idle H988 because H3588 they are H4591 few H4591, and those who look H7200 through [fn]windows H699 grow H2821 dark H2821; 4 and the doors H1817 on the street H7784 are shut H5462 as the sound H6963 of the grinding H2913 mill H2913 is low H8217, and one will arise H6965 at the sound H6963 of the bird H6833, and all H3605 the daughters H1323 of song H7892 will [fn]sing H7817 softly H7817. 5 Furthermore H1571, [fn]men are H3372 afraid H3372 of a high H1364 place and of terrors H2849 on the road H1870; the almond H8247 tree H8247 blooms H5340, the grasshopper H2284 drags H5445 itself along, and the caperberry H35 is ineffective H6565. For man H120 goes H1980 to his eternal H5769 home H1004, but the mourners H5594 go H5437 about H5437 in the street H7784. 6 Remember Him before H5704 H834 H3808 the silver H3701 [fn]cord H2256 is [fn]snapped H7576 and the golden H2091 bowl H1543 is crushed H7533, the pitcher H3537 by the spring H4002 is broken H7665 and the wheel H1534 at the cistern H953 is crushed H7533; 7 then the dust H6083 will return H7725 to the earth H776 as it was, and the [fn]spirit H7307 will return H7725 to God H430 who H834 gave H5414 it. 8 “Vanity H1892 of vanities H1892,” says H559 the Preacher H6953, “all H3605 is vanity H1892!”
Fear God and Keep His Commandments
9 In addition H3148 to being H1961 a wise H2450 man H2450, the Preacher H6953 also H5750 taught H3925 the people H5971 knowledge H1847; and he pondered H239, searched H2713 out H2713, and [fn]arranged H8626 many H7235 proverbs H4912.
10 The Preacher H6953 sought H1245 to find H4672 delightful H2656 words H1697 and words H1697 of truth H571 written H3789 uprightly H3476.
11 The words H1697 of wise H2450 men H2450 are like goads H1861, and masters H1167 of these collections H627 are like [fn]well-driven H5193 nails H4548; they are given H5414 by one H259 Shepherd H7462. 12 But in addition H3148 to this H1992, my son H1121, be warned H2094: the making H6213 of many H7235 books H5612 is endless H7093 H369, and much H3854 devotion H3854 to books is wearying H3024 to the flesh H1320.
13 The end H5490 of the matter H1697, all H3605 that has been heard H8085: fear H3372 God H430 and keep H8104 His commandments H4687, because H3588 this H2088 is the end of the matter for all H3605 mankind H120. 14 For God H430 will bring H935 every H3605 work H4639 to judgment H4941, everything H3605 which is hidden H5956, whether H518 it is good H2896 or evil H7451.
