Jerusalem Plays the Harlot

1 Then the word ^H1697 of Yahweh ^H3068 came ^H1961 to me, saying ^H559,

2 “Son ^H1121 of man ^H120, make ^H3045 known ^H3045 to Jerusalem ^H3389 her abominations ^H8441 3 and say ^H559, ‘Thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Lord ^H136 Yahweh ^H3068 to Jerusalem ^H3389, “Your origin ^H4351 and your birth ^H4138 are from the land ^H776 of the Canaanite ^H3669; your father ^H1 was an Amorite ^H567 and your mother ^H517 a Hittite ^H2850. 4 As for your birth ^H4138, on the day ^H3117 you were born ^H3205 your navel ^H8270 cord ^H8270 was not cut ^H3772, nor ^H3808 were you washed ^H7364 with water ^H4325 for cleansing ^H4935; you were not rubbed ^H4414 with ^H4414 salt ^H4414 or even wrapped ^H2853 in ^H2853 cloths ^H2853. 5 No ^H3808 eye ^H5869 had ^H2347 pity ^H2347 on you to do ^H6213 any ^H259 of these ^H428 things ^H428 for you, to have ^H2550 compassion ^H2550 on you. Rather you were thrown ^H7993 out ^H7993 into the [fn]open ^H6440 field ^H7704, for your soul ^H5315 was abhorred ^H1604 on the day ^H3117 you were born ^H3205.

6 “Then I passed ^H5674 by you and saw ^H7200 you squirming ^H947 in your blood ^H1818. So I said ^H559 to you while you were in your blood ^H1818, ‘Live ^H2421!’ Indeed I said ^H559 to you while you were in your blood ^H1818, ‘Live ^H2421!’ 7 I made ^H5414 you [fn]numerous ^H7233 like plants ^H6780 of the field ^H7704. Yet you were naked ^H5903 and bare ^H6181.

8 “Then I passed ^H5674 by you and saw ^H7200 you, and behold ^H2009, [fn]you were at the time ^H6256 for love ^H1730; so I spread ^H6566 My skirt ^H3671 over ^H5921 you and covered ^H3680 your nakedness ^H6172. 15 “But you trusted ^H982 in your beauty ^H3308 and played ^H2181 the ^H2181 harlot ^H2181 because ^H5921 of your name ^H8034, and you poured ^H8210 out ^H8210 your harlotries ^H8457 on every ^H3605 passer-by ^H5674 [fn]who might be willing. 16 You took ^H3947 some ^H4480 of your clothes ^H899, made ^H6213 for yourself high ^H1116 places ^H1116 of various ^H2921 colors ^H2921, and played ^H2181 the ^H2181 harlot ^H2181 on them, [fn]which should never ^H3808 come ^H935 about ^H935 nor ^H3808 happen ^H1961. 17 You also took ^H3947 your splendid ^H8597 [fn]jewelry ^H3627 made of My gold ^H2091 and of My silver ^H3701, which ^H834 I had given ^H5414 you, and made ^H6213 for yourself male ^H2145 images ^H6754 that you might play ^H2181 the ^H2181 harlot ^H2181 with them. 18 Then you took ^H3947 your embroidered ^H7553 cloth ^H899 and covered ^H3680 them and gave ^H5414 My oil ^H8081 and My incense ^H7004 before ^H6440 them. 19 Also My bread ^H3899 which ^H834 I gave ^H5414 you, fine ^H5560 flour ^H5560, oil ^H8081, and honey ^H1706 with which I had you eat ^H398, you gave ^H5414 before ^H6440 them for a soothing ^H5207 aroma ^H7381; so it happened ^H1961,” declares ^H5002 Lord ^H136 Yahweh ^H3068. 20 “Moreover, you took ^H3947 your sons ^H1121 and daughters ^H1323, whom ^H834 you had borne ^H3205 to Me, and sacrificed ^H2076 them to [fn]idols to be devoured ^H398. Were your harlotries ^H8457 so ^H4592 small ^H4592 a matter? 21 You slaughtered ^H7819 My children ^H1121 and gave ^H5414 them up ^H5414 to [fn]idols by causing them to pass ^H5674 through ^H5674 the fire. 22 Besides ^H854 all ^H3605 your abominations ^H8441 and harlotries ^H8457 you did not remember ^H2142 the days ^H3117 of your youth ^H5271, when you were naked ^H5903 and bare ^H6181—you were squirming ^H947 in your blood ^H1818!

23 “Now it happened ^H1961 after ^H310 all ^H3605 your evil ^H7451-‘Woe ^H188, woe ^H188 to you!’ declares ^H5002 Lord ^H136 Yahweh ^H3068— 24 that you built ^H1129 yourself a shrine ^H1354 and made ^H6213 yourself a high ^H7413 place ^H7413 in every ^H3605 square ^H7339. 25 You built ^H1129 yourself a high ^H7413 place ^H7413 at the head ^H7218 of every ^H3605 street ^H1870 and made ^H8581 your beauty ^H3308 abominable ^H8581, and you spread ^H6589 your legs ^H7272 to every ^H3605 passer-by ^H5674 to multiply ^H7235 your harlotry ^H8457. 26 You also played ^H2181 the ^H2181 harlot ^H2181 with the Egyptians ^H4714, your [fn]lustful ^H1320 H1432 neighbors ^H7934, and you multiplied ^H7235 your harlotry ^H8457 to provoke ^H3707 Me to ^H3707 anger ^H3707. 27 Behold ^H2009 now, I have stretched ^H5186 out ^H5186 My hand ^H3027 against ^H5921 you and cut ^H1639 off your rations ^H2706. 30 “How ^H4100 languishing ^H535 is your heart ^H3826,” declares ^H5002 Lord ^H136 Yahweh ^H3068, “while you do ^H6213 all ^H3605 these ^H428 things ^H4639, the actions ^H4639 of a [fn]bold-faced ^H7989 harlot ^H2181. 31 When you built ^H1129 your shrine ^H1354 at the head ^H7218 of every ^H3605 way ^H1870 and made ^H6213 your high ^H7413 place ^H7413 in every ^H3605 square ^H7339, in disdaining ^H7046 your earnings ^H868, you were not like a harlot ^H2181. 32 You adulteress ^H5003 wife ^H802, who takes ^H3947 strangers ^H2114 instead ^H8478 of ^H8478 her husband ^H376! 33 [fn]Men give ^H5414 gifts ^H5078 to all ^H3605 harlots ^H2181, but you give ^H5414 your gifts ^H5083 to all ^H3605 your lovers ^H157 to bribe ^H7809 them to come ^H935 to you from all ^H5439 around ^H5439 for your harlotries ^H8457. 34 Thus you are the opposite ^H2016 of those women ^H802 in your harlotries ^H8457, in that no ^H3808 one plays ^H2181 the ^H2181 harlot ^H2181 [fn]as you do, because you give ^H5414 away your earnings ^H868 and no ^H3808 earnings ^H868 are given ^H5414 to you; thus you are the opposite ^H2016.”

35 Therefore ^H3651, O harlot ^H2181, hear ^H8085 the word ^H1697 of Yahweh ^H3068. 36 Thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Lord ^H136 Yahweh ^H3068, “Because ^H3282 your lewdness ^H5178 was poured ^H8210 out ^H8210 and your nakedness ^H6172 uncovered ^H1540 through your harlotries ^H8457 with your lovers ^H157 and with all ^H3605 your abominable ^H8441 idols ^H1544, and because of the blood ^H1818 of your sons ^H1121 which ^H834 you gave ^H5414 to [fn]idols, 37 therefore ^H3651, behold ^H2009, I will gather ^H6908 all ^H3605 your lovers ^H157 with whom ^H834 you took ^H6149 pleasure ^H6149, even ^H5921 all ^H3605 those whom ^H834 you loved ^H157 and all ^H3605 those whom ^H834 you hated ^H8130. So I will gather ^H6908 them against ^H5921 you from all ^H5439 around ^H5439 and uncover ^H1540 your nakedness ^H6172 to them that they may see ^H7200 all ^H3605 your nakedness ^H6172. 38 Thus I will judge ^H8199 you like women who commit ^H5003 adultery ^H5003 or shed ^H8210 blood ^H1818 are judged ^H4941; and I will bring ^H5414 on you the blood ^H1818 of wrath ^H2534 and jealousy ^H7068. 39 I will also give ^H5414 you into [fn]the hands ^H3027 of your lovers, and they will pull ^H2040 down ^H2040 your shrines ^H1354, tear ^H5422 down ^H5422 your high ^H7413 places ^H7413, strip ^H6584 you of your clothing ^H899, take ^H3947 away your [fn]splendid ^H8597 jewelry ^H3627, and will leave ^H5117 you naked ^H5903 and bare ^H6181. 40 They will bring ^H5927 up ^H5927 an assembly ^H6951 against ^H5921 you, and they will stone ^H7275 you and cut ^H1333 you to ^H1333 pieces ^H1333 with their swords ^H2719. 41 They will burn ^H8313 your houses ^H1004 with fire ^H784 and execute ^H6213 judgments ^H8201 on you in the sight ^H5869 of many ^H7227 women ^H802. Then I will make ^H7673 you cease ^H7673 from playing ^H2181 the ^H2181 harlot ^H2181, and you will also ^H1571 no ^H3808 longer ^H5750 give ^H5414 [fn]your earnings ^H868 to your lovers. 42 So I will [fn]cause ^H5117 My wrath ^H2534 against you to be at rest ^H5117, and My jealousy ^H7068 will depart ^H5493 from you, and I will be quiet ^H8252, and I will not ^H3808 be provoked ^H3707 anymore ^H5750. 43 Because ^H3282 H834 you have not remembered ^H2142 the days ^H3117 of your youth ^H5271 but [fn]have enraged ^H7264 Me by all ^H3605 these ^H428 things ^H428, behold ^H1887, I in ^H1571 turn ^H1571 will bring ^H5414 your way ^H1870 down ^H5414 on your own head ^H7218,” declares ^H5002 Lord ^H136 Yahweh ^H3068, “so that you will not commit ^H6213 this lewdness ^H2154 on top ^H5921 of all ^H3605 your other abominations ^H8441.

44 “Behold ^H2009, everyone ^H3605 who quotes ^H4911 proverbs ^H4911 will quote ^H4911 this proverb ^H4911 concerning ^H5921 you, saying ^H559, ‘[fn]Like mother ^H517, [fn]like daughter ^H1323.’ 45 You are the daughter ^H1323 of your mother ^H517, who loathed ^H1602 her husband ^H376 and children ^H1121. You are also the sister ^H269 of your sisters ^H269, who ^H834 loathed ^H1602 their husbands ^H376 and children ^H1121. Your mother ^H517 was a Hittite ^H2850 and your father ^H1 an Amorite ^H567. 46 Now your older ^H1419 sister ^H269 is Samaria ^H8111, who lives ^H3427 [fn]north ^H8040 of you with her [fn]daughters ^H1323; and your younger ^H6996 sister ^H269, who lives ^H3427 [fn]south ^H3225 of you, is Sodom ^H5467 with her daughters ^H1323. 47 Yet you have not merely walked ^H1980 in their ways ^H1870 or done ^H6213 according to their abominations ^H8441; but, as if that were too ^H6985 little ^H4592, you acted ^H7843 more ^H4480 corruptly ^H7843 in all ^H3605 your ways ^H1870 than ^H4480 they. 48 As I live ^H2416,” declares ^H5002 Lord ^H136 Yahweh ^H3068, “Sodom ^H5467 your sister ^H269 and her daughters ^H1323 have not done ^H6213 as you and your daughters ^H1323 have done ^H6213. 49 Behold ^H2009, this ^H2088 was the iniquity ^H5771 of your sister ^H269 Sodom ^H5467: she and her daughters ^H1323 had ^H1961 lofty ^H1347 pride ^H1347, abundant ^H7654 food ^H3899, and quiet ^H8252 ease ^H7962, but she did not strengthen ^H2388 the hand ^H3027 of the afflicted ^H6041 and needy ^H34. 50 Then they were ^H1361 haughty ^H1361 and committed ^H6213 abominations ^H8441 before ^H6440 Me. So I removed ^H5493 them [fn]when ^H834 I saw ^H7200 it. 51 Furthermore, Samaria ^H8111 did not commit ^H2398 half ^H2677 of your sins ^H2403, for you have multiplied ^H7235 your abominations ^H8441 more ^H4480 than ^H4480 they. Thus you have made ^H6663 your sisters ^H269 appear ^H6663 righteous ^H6663 by all ^H3605 your abominations ^H8441 which ^H834 you have done ^H6213. 52 Also ^H1571 bear ^H5375 your dishonor ^H3639 in that you have [fn]made ^H6419 judgment ^H6419 favorable ^H6419 for your sisters ^H269. Because of your sins ^H2403 in which ^H834 you acted ^H8581 more ^H4480 abominably ^H8581 than ^H4480 they, they are ^H6663 more ^H4480 in ^H6663 the ^H6663 right ^H6663 than ^H4480 you. Yes ^H1571, be ^H954 also ^H1571 ashamed ^H954 and bear ^H5375 your dishonor ^H3639, in that you made ^H6663 your sisters ^H269 appear ^H6663 righteous ^H6663.

53 “Nevertheless, I will [fn]return ^H7725 their captivity ^H7622, the captivity ^H7622 of Sodom ^H5467 and her daughters ^H1323, the captivity ^H7622 of Samaria ^H8111 and her daughters ^H1323, and [fn]along ^H8432 with them [fn]your own ^H7622 captivity ^H7622, 54 in order ^H4616 that you may bear ^H5375 your dishonor ^H3639 and feel ^H3637 dishonor ^H3637 for all ^H3605 that you have done ^H6213 when you become ^H5162 a ^H5162 comfort ^H5162 to them. 55 Your sisters ^H269, Sodom ^H5467 with her daughters ^H1323 and Samaria ^H8111 with her daughters ^H1323, [fn]will return ^H7725 to their former ^H6927 state ^H6927, and you with your daughters ^H1323 will also return ^H7725 to your former ^H6927 state ^H6927. 56 As the name of your sister ^H269 Sodom ^H5467 was not heard ^H8052 in your mouth ^H6310 in your day ^H3117 of lofty ^H1347 pride ^H1347, 57 before ^H2962 your wickedness ^H7451 was uncovered ^H1540, [fn]so ^H3644 now ^H6256 you have become the reproach ^H2781 of the daughters ^H1323 of [fn]Edom ^H123 and of all ^H3605 who are around ^H5439 her, of the daughters ^H1323 of the Philistines ^H6430—those all ^H5439 around ^H5439 you who despise ^H7751 you. 58 You have borne ^H5375 the penalty of your lewdness ^H2154 and abominations ^H8441,” declares ^H5002 Yahweh ^H3068. 59 For thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Lord ^H136 Yahweh ^H3068, “I will also do ^H6213 with you as you have done ^H6213, you who ^H834 have despised ^H959 the oath ^H423 by breaking ^H6565 the covenant ^H1285.

Yahweh’s Everlasting Covenant

60 “Nevertheless, I Myself will remember ^H2142 My covenant ^H1285 with you in the days ^H3117 of your youth ^H5271, and I will establish ^H6965 an everlasting ^H5769 covenant ^H1285 with you.

61 Then you will remember ^H2142 your ways ^H1870 and feel ^H3637 dishonor ^H3637 when you receive ^H3947 your sisters ^H269, both your older ^H1419 and your younger ^H6996; and I will give ^H5414 them to you as daughters ^H1323, but not because ^H4480 of your covenant ^H1285. 62 Thus I will establish ^H6965 My covenant ^H1285 with you, and you shall know ^H3045 that I am Yahweh ^H3068, 63 so that you may remember ^H2142 and be ^H954 ashamed ^H954 and never ^H3808 open ^H6610 your mouth ^H6310 anymore ^H5750 because ^H4480 H6440 of your dishonor ^H3639, when I have atoned ^H3722 for you for all ^H3605 that you have done ^H6213,” declares ^H5002 Lord ^H136 Yahweh ^H3068.
