The Philistines Mistrust David
1 Now the Philistines H6430 gathered H6908 together all H3605 their armies H4264 to Aphek H663, while the Israelites H3478 were camping H2583 by the spring H5869 which H834 is in Jezreel H3157.
2 And the governors H5633 of the Philistines H6430 were proceeding H5674 on H5674, leading hundreds H3967 and thousands H505, and David H1732 and his men H376 were proceeding H5674 in the back H314 with Achish H397. 3 Then the commanders H8269 of the Philistines H6430 said H559, “What H4100 are these H428 Hebrews H5680 doing here?” And Achish H397 said H559 to the commanders H8269 of the Philistines H6430, “Is this H2088 not David H1732, the servant H5650 of Saul H7586 the king H4428 of Israel H3478, who H834 has been H1961 with me these H2088 days H3117, or H176 rather these H2088 years H8141, and I have found H4672 nothing H3808 H3972 at H3972 all H3972 suspicious in him since H4480 the day H3117 he [fn]deserted H5307 to me to this H2088 day H3117?” 4 But the commanders H8269 of the Philistines H6430 were H7107 angry H7107 with him, and the commanders H8269 of the Philistines H6430 said H559 to him, “Make the man H376 go H7725 back H7725, so that he will return H7725 to his place H4725 where H834 H8033 you have assigned H6485 him, and do not let him go H3381 down H3381 to battle H4421 with us, or H3808 in the battle H4421 he may become H1961 an adversary H7854 to us. For how H4100 could this H2088 man find H7521 favor H7521 with his lord H113? Would it not be with the heads H7218 of [fn]these H1992 men H376? 5 Is this H2088 not David H1732, of whom H834 they sing H6030 in the dances H4246, saying H559,
‘Saul H7586 has slain H5221 his thousands H505,
And David H1732 his ten H7233 thousands H7233’?”
6 Then Achish H397 called H7121 David H1732 and said H559 to him, “As the LORD H3068 lives H2416, you have indeed H3588 been honest H3477, and your [fn]going H3318 out H3318 and your coming H935 in H935 with me in the army H4264 are pleasing H2896 in my sight H5869; for I have not found H4672 evil H7451 in you since H3588 the day H3117 of your coming H935 to me to this H2088 day H3117. Nevertheless, you are not pleasing H2896 in the sight H5869 of the governors H5633. 7 Now H6258 then, return H7725 and go H1980 in peace H7965, so that you will not do H6213 anything wrong H7451 in the sight H5869 of the governors H5633 of the Philistines H6430.” 8 However, David H1732 said H559 to Achish H397, “But what H4100 have I done H6213? And what H4100 have you found H4672 in your servant H5650 since H4480 the day H3117 that I came H1961 before H6440 you, to this H2088 day H3117, that I cannot go H935 and fight H3898 against the enemies H340 of my lord H113 the king H4428?” 9 But Achish H397 replied H6030 to David H1732, “I know H3045 that you are pleasing H2896 in my sight H5869, like an angel H4397 of God H430; nevertheless H389 the commanders H8269 of the Philistines H6430 have said H559, ‘He must not go H5927 up H5927 with us into the battle H4421.’ 10 Now H6258 then, rise H7925 early H7925 in the morning H1242 with the servants H5650 of your lord H113 who H834 have come H935 with you, and as soon as you have risen H7925 early H7925 in the morning H1242 and have H215 light H215, leave H1980.” 11 So David H1732 got H7925 up H7925 early H7925, he and his men H376, to leave H1980 in the morning H1242 to return H7725 to the land H776 of the Philistines H6430. And the Philistines H6430 went H5927 up H5927 to Jezreel H3157.
