Saul and His Sons Killed in Battle
1 Now the Philistines H6430 were fighting H3898 against Israel H3478, and the men H376 of Israel H3478 fled H5127 from the Philistines H6430 but fell H5307 fatally H2491 wounded H2491 on Mount H2022 Gilboa H1533.
2 And the Philistines H6430 also overtook H1692 Saul H7586 and his sons H1121, and the Philistines H6430 [fn]killed H5221 Jonathan H3083, Abinadab H41, and Malchi-shua H4444, the sons H1121 of Saul H7586. 3 The battle H4421 went H3513 heavily H3513 against H413 Saul H7586, and the archers H3384 H376 H7198 found H4672 him; and he was gravely H3966 wounded H2342 by the archers H3384. 4 Then Saul H7586 said H559 to his armor H3627 bearer H5375, “Draw H8025 your sword H2719 and pierce H1856 me through H1856 with it, otherwise H6435 these H428 uncircumcised H6189 Philistines will come H935 and pierce H1856 me through H1856, and abuse H5953 me.” But his armor H3627 bearer H5375 was unwilling H3808 H14, because H3588 he was H3372 very H3966 fearful H3372. So Saul H7586 took H3947 [fn]his sword H2719 and fell H5307 on it. 5 When his armor H3627 bearer H5375 saw H7200 that Saul H7586 was dead H4191, he also H1571 fell H5307 on his sword H2719 and died H4191 with him. 6 So Saul H7586 died H4191 with his three H7969 sons H1121, his armor H3627 bearer H5375, and all H3605 his men H376 on that day H3117 together H3162.
7 Now when the people H376 of Israel H3478 who H834 were on the other H5676 side H5676 of the valley H6010, with those who H834 were beyond H5676 the Jordan H3383, saw H7200 that the men H376 of Israel H3478 had fled H5127 and that Saul H7586 and his sons H1121 were dead H4191, they abandoned H5800 the cities H5892 and fled H5127; then the Philistines H6430 came H935 and settled H3427 in them.
8 It came H1961 about H1961 on the next H4283 day H4283, when the Philistines H6430 came H935 to strip H6584 those killed H2491, that they found H4672 Saul H7586 and his three H7969 sons H1121 fallen H5307 on Mount H2022 Gilboa H1533. 9 They cut H3772 off H3772 his head H7218 and stripped H6584 off H6584 his weapons H3627, and sent H7971 them [fn]throughout H5439 the land H776 of the Philistines H6430, to bring H1319 the good H1319 news H1319 to the house H1004 of their idols H6091 and to the people H5971. 10 They put H7760 his weapons H3627 in the [fn]temple H1004 of Ashtaroth H6252, and they nailed H8628 his body H1472 to the wall H2346 of Beth-shan H1052. 11 Now when the inhabitants H3427 of Jabesh-gilead H3003 H1568 heard H8085 [fn]what H834 the Philistines H6430 had done H6213 to Saul H7586, 12 all H3605 the valiant H2428 men H376 got H6965 up H6965 and walked H1980 all H3605 night H3915, and they took H3947 the body H1472 of Saul H7586 and the bodies H1472 of his sons H1121 from the wall H2346 of Beth-shan H1052, and they came H935 to Jabesh H3003 and burned H8313 them there H8033. 13 And they took H3947 their bones H6106 and buried H6912 them under H8478 the tamarisk H815 tree H815 in Jabesh H3003, and fasted H6684 for seven H7651 days H3117.
