Israel Saved from the Philistines

1 And the men ^H376 of Kiriath-jearim ^H7157 came ^H935 and took ^H5927 the ark ^H727 of the LORD ^H3068 and brought ^H935 it into the house ^H1004 of Abinadab ^H41 on the hill ^H1389, and they [fn]consecrated ^H6942 his son ^H1121 Eleazar ^H499 to watch ^H8104 over ^H8104 the ark ^H727 of the LORD ^H3068.

2 From the day ^H3117 that the ark ^H727 remained ^H3427 at Kiriath-jearim ^H7157, the [fn]time ^H3117 was ^H7235 long ^H7235, for it was twenty ^H6242 years ^H8141; and all ^H3605 the house ^H1004 of Israel ^H3478 [fn]mourned ^H5091 after ^H310 the LORD ^H3068.

3 Then Samuel ^H8050 spoke ^H559 to all ^H3605 the house ^H1004 of Israel ^H3478, saying ^H559, “If ^H518 you are returning ^H7725 to the LORD ^H3068 with all ^H3605 your heart ^H3824, then remove ^H5493 the foreign ^H5236 gods ^H430 and the Ashtaroth ^H6252 from among ^H8432 you, and direct ^H3559 your hearts ^H3824 to the LORD ^H3068 and serve ^H5647 Him alone ^H905; and He will save ^H5337 you from the hand ^H3027 of the Philistines ^H6430.” 4 So the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 removed ^H5493 the Baals ^H1168 and the Ashtaroth ^H6252, and served ^H5647 the LORD ^H3068 alone ^H905.

5 Then Samuel ^H8050 said ^H559, “Gather ^H6908 all ^H3605 Israel ^H3478 to Mizpah ^H4708 and I will pray ^H6419 to the LORD ^H3068 for you.” 6 So they gathered ^H6908 to Mizpah ^H4709, and drew ^H7579 water ^H4325 and poured ^H8210 it out ^H8210 before ^H6440 the LORD ^H3068, and fasted ^H6684 on that day ^H3117 and said ^H559 there ^H8033, “We have sinned ^H2398 against the LORD ^H3068.” And Samuel ^H8050 judged ^H8199 the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 at Mizpah ^H4709.

7 Now when the Philistines ^H6430 heard ^H8085 that the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 had gathered ^H6908 at Mizpah ^H4709, the governors ^H5633 of the Philistines ^H6430 went ^H5927 up ^H5927 against ^H413 Israel ^H3478. And when the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 heard ^H8085 about it, they were ^H3372 afraid ^H3372 of the Philistines ^H6430. 8 So the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 said ^H559 to Samuel ^H8050, “Do not stop ^H2790 crying ^H2199 out ^H2199 to the LORD ^H3068 our God ^H430 for us, that He will save ^H3467 us from the hand ^H3027 of the Philistines ^H6430!” 9 Samuel ^H8050 took ^H3947 a nursing ^H2461 lamb ^H2924 and offered ^H5927 it as a whole ^H3632 burnt ^H5930 offering ^H5930 to the LORD ^H3068; and Samuel ^H8050 cried ^H2199 out ^H2199 to the LORD ^H3068 for Israel ^H3478, and the LORD ^H3068 answered ^H6030 him. 10 Now Samuel ^H8050 was offering ^H5927 up ^H5927 the burnt ^H5930 offering ^H5930, and the Philistines ^H6430 advanced ^H5066 to battle ^H4421 Israel ^H3478. But the LORD ^H3068 thundered ^H7481 with a great ^H1419 [fn]thunder ^H6963 on that day ^H3117 against ^H5921 the Philistines ^H6430 and confused ^H2000 them, so that they were struck ^H5062 down ^H5062 before ^H6440 Israel ^H3478. 11 And the men ^H376 of Israel ^H3478 came ^H3318 out ^H3318 of Mizpah ^H4709 and pursued ^H7291 the Philistines ^H6430, and killed ^H5221 them as far ^H5704 as below ^H4480 H8478 Beth-car ^H1033.

12 Then Samuel ^H8050 took ^H3947 a stone ^H68 and placed ^H7760 it between ^H996 Mizpah ^H4709 and Shen ^H8129, and named ^H7121 H8034 it [fn]Ebenezer ^H72, saying ^H559, “[fn]So ^H2008 far ^H5704 the LORD ^H3068 has helped ^H5826 us.” 13 So the Philistines ^H6430 were subdued ^H3665, and they did not come ^H935 anymore ^H3254 H5750 within the border ^H1366 of Israel ^H3478. And the hand ^H3027 of the LORD ^H3068 was against the Philistines ^H6430 all ^H3605 the days ^H3117 of Samuel ^H8050. 14 The cities ^H5892 which ^H834 the Philistines ^H6430 had taken ^H3947 from Israel ^H3478 were restored ^H7725 to Israel ^H3478, from Ekron ^H6138 even to Gath ^H1661; and Israel ^H3478 [fn]recovered ^H5337 their territory ^H1366 from the hand ^H3027 of the Philistines ^H6430. So there was peace ^H7965 between ^H996 Israel ^H3478 and the Amorites ^H567.

Samuel’s Ministry

15 Now Samuel ^H8050 judged ^H8199 Israel ^H3478 all ^H3605 the days ^H3117 of his life ^H2416.

16 And he used to go ^H1980 annually ^H1767 H8141 on ^H5437 a ^H5437 circuit ^H5437 to Bethel ^H1008, Gilgal ^H1537, and Mizpah ^H4709, and he judged ^H8199 Israel ^H3478 in all ^H3605 these ^H428 places ^H4725. 17 Then he would make his return ^H8666 to Ramah ^H7414, because ^H3588 his house ^H1004 was there ^H8033, and there ^H8033 he also judged ^H8199 Israel ^H3478; and there ^H8033 he built ^H1129 an altar ^H4196 to the LORD ^H3068.
