Ahaz Succeeds Jotham in Judah
1 Ahaz H271 was twenty H6242 years H8141 old H1121 when he became H4427 king H4427, and he reigned H4427 in Jerusalem H3389 for sixteen H8337 H6240 years H8141. He did not do H6213 what was right H3477 in the sight H5869 of the LORD H3068 as his father H1 David H1732 had done.
2 But he walked H1980 in the ways H1870 of the kings H4428 of Israel H3478; he also H1571 made H6213 cast H4541 metal H4541 images H4541 for the Baals H1168. 3 Furthermore, he burned H6999 incense H6999 in the Valley H1516 of Ben-hinnom H1121 H2011, and burned H1197 his sons H1121 in fire H784, according to the abominations H8441 of the nations H1471 whom H834 the LORD H3068 had driven H3423 out H3423 from the sons H1121 of Israel H3478. 4 He sacrificed H2076 and burned H6999 incense H6999 on the high H1116 places H1116, on the hills H1389, and under H8478 every H3605 green H7488 tree H6086.
Judah Is Invaded
5 Therefore the LORD H3068 his God H430 handed H5414 H3027 him over H5414 to the king H4428 of Aram H758; and they [fn]defeated H5221 him and carried H7617 from him a great H1419 number of captives H7633, and brought H935 them to Damascus H1834. And he was also H1571 handed H5414 H3027 over H5414 to the king H4428 of Israel H3478, who struck H5221 him with heavy H1419 casualties H4347.
6 For Pekah H6492 the son H1121 of Remaliah H7425 killed H2026 120,000 H3967 H6242 H505 in Judah H3063 in one H259 day H3117, all H3605 valiant H2428 men H1121, because they had abandoned H5800 the LORD H3068 God H430 of their fathers H1. 7 And Zichri H2147, a mighty H1368 man H1368 of Ephraim H669, killed H2026 Maaseiah H4641 the king’s H4428 son H1121, Azrikam H5840 the ruler H5057 of the house H1004, and Elkanah H511 the second H4932 to the king H4428.
8 The sons H1121 of Israel H3478 led H7617 away H7617 captive H7617 two H3967 hundred H3967 thousand H505 of their relatives H251, women H802, sons H1121, and daughters H1323; and they also H1571 [fn]took H962 a great H7227 deal H7227 of spoils H7998 from them, and brought H935 the spoils H7998 to Samaria H8111. 9 But a prophet H5030 of the LORD H3068 was there H8033, whose name H8034 was Oded H5752; and he went H3318 out H3318 to meet H6440 the army H6635 which came H935 to Samaria H8111 and said H559 to them, “Behold H2009, because the LORD H3068, the God H430 of your fathers H1, was angry H2534 with Judah H3063, He has handed H5414 H3027 them over H5414 to you, and you have killed H2026 them in a rage H2197 which has even H5704 reached H5060 heaven H8064. 10 Now H6258 you are proposing H559 to subjugate H3533 the people H1121 of Judah H3063 and Jerusalem H3389 as male H5650 and female H8198 slaves H8198 H5650 for yourselves. Are you not, however H7534 guilty H5973 H819 yourselves H859 of offenses H819 against the LORD H3068 your God H430? 11 Now H6258 then, listen H8085 to me and return H7725 the captives H7633 whom H834 you captured H7617 from your brothers H251, for the burning H2740 anger H639 of the LORD H3068 is against H5921 you.” 12 Then some H376 of the leading H7218 men H376 of the sons H1121 of Ephraim H669—Azariah H5838 the son H1121 of Johanan H3076, Berechiah H1296 the son H1121 of Meshillemoth H4919, Jehizkiah H3169 the son H1121 of Shallum H7967, and Amasa H6021 the son H1121 of Hadlai H2311—rose H6965 up H6965 against H5921 those who were coming H935 from the battle H6635, 13 and said H559 to them, “You must not bring H935 the captives H7633 in H935 here H2008, for you are proposing H559 to bring guilt H819 upon us before the LORD H3068, adding H3254 to our sins H2403 and our guilt H819; for our guilt H819 is great H7227, and His burning H2740 anger H639 is against H5921 Israel H3478.” 14 So the armed H2502 men H2502 left H5800 the captives H7633 and the spoils H957 before H6440 the officers H8269 and all H3605 the assembly H6951. 15 Then the men H376 who H834 were designated H5344 by name H8034 got H6965 up H6965, took H2388 the captives H7633, and they clothed H3847 all H3605 their naked H4636 people H4636 from the spoils H7998; they gave H3847 them clothes H3847 and sandals H5274, fed H398 them and gave H8248 them drink H8248, anointed H5480 them with oil, led H5095 all H3605 their feeble H3782 ones on donkeys H2543, and brought H935 them to Jericho H3405, the city H5892 of palm H8558 trees H8558, to their brothers H251; then they returned H7725 to Samaria H8111.
Compromise with Assyria
16 At that time H6256 King H4428 Ahaz H271 sent H7971 word to the [fn]kings H4428 of Assyria H804 for help H5826.
17 For the Edomites H130 had come H935 again H5750 and attacked H5221 Judah H3063, and led H7617 away H7617 captives H7628. 18 The Philistines H6430 had also invaded H6584 the cities H5892 of the [fn]lowland H8219 and of the Negev H5045 of Judah H3063, and had taken H3920 Beth-shemesh H1053, Aijalon H357, Gederoth H1450, and Soco H7755 with its villages H1323, Timnah H8553 with its villages H1323, and Gimzo H1579 with its villages H1323; and they had settled H3427 there H8033. 19 For the LORD H3068 had humbled H3665 Judah H3063 because H5668 of Ahaz H271 king H4428 of Israel H3478, for he had brought H6544 about H6544 a lack H6544 of H6544 restraint H6544 in Judah H3063 and was very H4604 unfaithful H4604 to the LORD H3068. 20 So Tilgath-pilneser H8407 king H4428 of Assyria H804 came H935 against H5921 him and afflicted H6887 him instead H3808 of strengthening H2388 him. 21 Although H3588 Ahaz H271 took H2505 a H2505 portion H2505 out H2505 of the house H1004 of the LORD H3068 and out of the palace H1004 of the king H4428 and of the princes H8269, and gave H5414 it to the king H4428 of Assyria H804, it did not help H5833 him.
22 Now during the time H6256 of his distress H6887, this H1931 same H1931 King H4428 Ahaz H271 became H4603 even H3254 more H3254 unfaithful H4603 to the LORD H3068. 23 For he sacrificed H2076 to the gods H430 of Damascus H1834 who had [fn]defeated H5221 him, and said H559, “Because H3588 the gods H430 of the kings H4428 of Aram H758 helped H5826 them, I will sacrifice H2076 to them so that they may help H5826 me.” But they became H1961 the [fn]downfall H3782 of him and all H3605 Israel H3478. 24 Moreover, when Ahaz H271 gathered H622 together the utensils H3627 of the house H1004 of God H430, he cut H7112 the utensils H3627 of the house H1004 of God H430 in H7112 pieces H7112; and he closed H5462 the doors H1817 of the house H1004 of the LORD H3068, and made H6213 altars H4196 for himself in every H3605 corner H6438 of Jerusalem H3389. 25 In every H3605 city H5892 of Judah H3063 he made H6213 high H1116 places H1116 to burn H6999 incense H6999 to other H312 gods H430, and provoked H3707 the LORD H3068, the God H430 of his fathers H1, to H3707 anger H3707. 26 Now the rest H3499 of his acts H1697 and all H3605 his ways H1870, from the first H7223 to the last H314, behold H2009, they are written H3789 in the Book H5612 of the Kings H4428 of Judah H3063 and Israel H3478. 27 So Ahaz H271 [fn]lay H7901 down H7901 with his fathers H1, and they buried H6912 him in the city H5892, in Jerusalem H3389, for they did not bring H935 him to the tombs H6913 of the kings H4428 of Israel H3478; and his son H1121 Hezekiah H2396 reigned H4427 in H8478 his place H8478.
