The Futility of Life
1 There H3426 is H3426 an evil H7451 which H834 I have seen H7200 under H8478 the sun H8121, and it is widespread H7227 [fn]among H5921 mankind H120:
2 a person H376 to whom H834 God H430 has given H5414 riches H6239, wealth H5233, and honor H3519, so that his soul H5315 lacks H2638 nothing H369 of all H3605 that he desires H183, yet God H430 has not given H7980 him the H7980 opportunity H7980 to [fn]enjoy H398 these things, but a foreigner H5237 [fn]enjoys H398 them. This H2088 is futility H1892 and a severe H7451 affliction H2483. 3 If H518 a man H376 fathers H3205 a hundred H3967 children and lives H2421 many H7227 years H8141, however many H7227 [fn]they may be, but his soul H5315 is H7646 not satisfied H7646 with good H2896 things H2896 and he does not even H1571 have H1961 a proper burial H6900, then I say H559, “Better H2896 the miscarriage H5309 than H4480 he, 4 for a miscarriage comes H935 in futility H1892 and goes H1980 into darkness H2822; and its name H8034 is covered H3680 in darkness H2822. 5 It has not H1571 even H1571 seen H7200 the sun H8121 nor H3808 does it know H3045 it; yet [fn]it is better H4480 H5183 off H5183 than H4480 that man. 6 Even if H432 the man lives H2421 a thousand H505 years H8141 twice H6471, but does not see H7200 good H2896 things H2896—do not all H3605 go H1980 to one H259 and the same place H4725?”
7 All H3605 a person’s H120 labor H5999 is for his mouth H6310, and yet H1571 [fn]his appetite H5315 is not [fn]satisfied H4390. 8 For what H4100 advantage H3148 does the wise H2450 person H2450 have over H4480 the fool H3684? What H4100 does the poor H6041 person H6041 have, knowing H3045 how to walk H1980 before H5048 the living H2416? 9 What H4758 the eyes H5869 see H4758 is better H2896 than H4480 what the soul H5315 [fn]desires H1980. This H2088 too H1571 is futility H1892 and striving H7469 after wind H7307.
10 Whatever H4100 H7945 exists H1961 has already H3528 been named H7121 H8034, and it is known H3045 what H834 man H120 is; for he cannot H3201 H3808 dispute H1777 with the [fn]one who H7945 is mightier H8623 than H4480 he is. 11 For there H3426 are H3426 many H7235 words H1697 which increase H7235 futility H1892. What H4100 then is the advantage H3148 to a person H120? 12 For who H4310 knows H3045 what H4100 is good H2896 for a person H120 during his lifetime H2416, during the few H4557 [fn]years H3117 of his futile H1892 life H2416? He will [fn]spend H6213 them like a shadow H6738. For who H4310 can tell H5046 a person H120 what H4100 will happen H1961 after H310 him under H8478 the sun H8121?
