The Sons of Jacob

1 Now when Rachel ^H7354 saw ^H7200 that she had not borne ^H3205 Jacob ^H3290 any children ^H3205, [fn]she became ^H7065 jealous ^H7065 of her sister ^H269; and she said ^H559 to Jacob ^H3290, “Give ^H3051 me children ^H1121, or else ^H518 H369 I am going to die ^H4191.”

2 Then Jacob’s ^H3290 anger ^H639 burned ^H2734 against Rachel ^H7354, and he said ^H559, “Am I in ^H8478 the place ^H8478 of ^H8478 God ^H430, who ^H834 has withheld ^H4513 from you the fruit ^H6529 of the womb ^H990?” 3 Then she said ^H559, “Here ^H2009 is my female ^H519 slave ^H519 Bilhah ^H1090: have ^H935 relations ^H935 with ^H935 her that she may give ^H3205 birth ^H3205 [fn]on my knees ^H1290, so that [fn]by her I too ^H1571 may obtain ^H1129 a child ^H1129.” 4 So she gave ^H5414 him her slave ^H8198 Bilhah ^H1090 as a wife ^H802, and Jacob ^H3290 had ^H935 relations ^H935 with ^H935 her. 5 Bilhah ^H1090 conceived ^H2029 and bore ^H3205 Jacob ^H3290 a son ^H1121. 6 Then Rachel ^H7354 said ^H559, “God ^H430 has [fn]vindicated ^H1777 me, and has indeed ^H1571 heard ^H8085 my voice ^H6963 and has given ^H5414 me a son ^H1121.” Therefore ^H5921 H3651 she named ^H7121 him [fn]Dan ^H1835. 7 And Rachel’s ^H7354 slave ^H8198 Bilhah ^H1090 conceived ^H2029 again ^H5750 and bore ^H3205 Jacob ^H3290 a second ^H8145 son ^H1121. 8 So Rachel ^H7354 said ^H559, “With [fn]mighty ^H430 wrestling ^H5319 I have [fn]wrestled ^H6617 with my sister ^H269, and I have indeed ^H1571 prevailed ^H3201.” And she named ^H7121 him Naphtali ^H5321.

9 When Leah ^H3812 saw ^H7200 that she had stopped ^H5975 having ^H3205 children ^H3205, she took ^H3947 her slave ^H8198 Zilpah ^H2153 and gave ^H5414 her to Jacob ^H3290 as a wife ^H802. 10 And Leah’s ^H3812 slave ^H8198 Zilpah ^H2153 bore ^H3205 Jacob ^H3290 a son ^H1121. 11 Then Leah ^H3812 said ^H559, “[fn]How fortunate ^H1409!” So she named ^H7121 him [fn]Gad ^H1410. 12 And Leah’s ^H3812 slave ^H8198 Zilpah ^H2153 bore ^H3205 Jacob ^H3290 a second ^H8145 son ^H1121. 13 Then Leah ^H3812 said ^H559, “[fn]Happy ^H837 am I! For women ^H1323 will call ^H7121 me happy ^H833.” So she named ^H7121 him [fn]Asher ^H836.

14 Now in the days ^H3117 of wheat ^H2406 harvest ^H7105 Reuben ^H7205 went ^H1980 and found ^H4672 mandrake ^H1736 fruits ^H1736 in the field ^H7704, and brought ^H935 them to his mother ^H517 Leah ^H3812. Then Rachel ^H7354 said ^H559 to Leah ^H3812, “Please ^H4994 give ^H5414 me some ^H4480 of your son’s ^H1121 mandrakes ^H1736.” 15 But she said ^H559 to her, “Is it a small ^H4592 matter ^H4592 for you to take ^H3947 my husband ^H376? And would you take ^H3947 my son’s ^H1121 mandrakes ^H1736 also ^H1571?” So Rachel ^H7354 said ^H559, “Therefore ^H3651 he may sleep ^H7901 with you tonight ^H3915 in ^H8478 return ^H8478 for ^H8478 your son’s ^H1121 mandrakes ^H1736.” 16 When Jacob ^H3290 came ^H935 in ^H935 from the field ^H7704 in the evening ^H6153, Leah ^H3812 went ^H3318 out ^H3318 to meet ^H7122 him and said ^H559, “You must have ^H935 relations ^H935 with ^H935 me, for I have indeed ^H7936 hired ^H7936 you with my son’s ^H1121 mandrakes ^H1736.” So he slept ^H7901 with her that night ^H3915. 17 God ^H430 listened ^H8085 to Leah ^H3812, and she conceived ^H2029 and bore ^H3205 Jacob ^H3290 a fifth ^H2549 son ^H1121. 18 Then Leah ^H3812 said ^H559, “God ^H430 has given ^H5414 me my [fn]reward ^H7939, because ^H834 I gave ^H5414 my slave ^H8198 to my husband ^H376.” So she named ^H7121 him Issachar ^H3485. 19 And Leah ^H3812 conceived ^H2029 again ^H5750 and bore ^H3205 a sixth ^H8345 son ^H1121 to Jacob ^H3290. 20 Then Leah ^H3812 said ^H559, “God ^H430 has endowed ^H2064 me with a good ^H2896 gift ^H2065; finally ^H6471 my husband ^H376 [fn]will acknowledge ^H2082 me as his wife, because ^H3588 I have borne ^H3205 him six ^H8337 sons ^H1121.” So she named ^H7121 him Zebulun ^H2074. 21 Afterward ^H310 she gave ^H3205 birth ^H3205 to a daughter ^H1323, and named ^H7121 H8034 her Dinah ^H1783.

22 Then God ^H430 remembered ^H2142 Rachel ^H7354, and God ^H430 listened ^H8085 to her and opened ^H6605 her womb ^H7358. 23 So she conceived ^H2029 and gave ^H3205 birth ^H3205 to a son ^H1121, and said ^H559, “God ^H430 has taken ^H622 away ^H622 my disgrace ^H2781.” 24 And she named ^H7121 H8034 him Joseph ^H3130, saying ^H559, “May the LORD ^H3068 [fn]give ^H3254 me another ^H312 son ^H1121.”

Jacob Prospers

25 Now it came ^H1961 about ^H1961, when ^H834 Rachel ^H7354 had given ^H3205 birth ^H3205 to Joseph ^H3130, that Jacob ^H3290 said ^H559 to Laban ^H3837, “Send ^H7971 me away ^H7971, so that I may go ^H1980 to my own place ^H4725 and to my own country ^H776.

26 Give ^H5414 me my wives ^H802 and my children ^H3206 for whom ^H834 I have served ^H5647 you, and let me go ^H1980; for you yourself ^H859 know ^H3045 my service ^H5656 which ^H834 I have [fn]rendered ^H5647 you.” 27 But Laban ^H3837 said ^H559 to him, “If ^H518 [fn]it pleases ^H4672 H2580 you at ^H4994 all ^H4994, stay with me; I have determined ^H5172 by ^H5172 divination ^H5172 that the LORD ^H3068 has blessed ^H1288 me on your account ^H1558.” 28 He [fn]continued ^H559, “Name ^H5344 me your wages ^H7939, and I will give ^H5414 them.” 29 But Jacob said ^H559 to him, “You yourself ^H859 know ^H3045 how ^H854 H834 I have served ^H5647 you and how ^H854 H834 your livestock ^H4735 have [fn]fared ^H1961 with me. 30 For you had ^H1961 little ^H4592 before ^H6440 [fn]I came, and it has [fn]increased ^H6555 to a multitude ^H7230, and the LORD ^H3068 has blessed ^H1288 you [fn]wherever I turned ^H7272. But now ^H6258, when ^H4970 shall I provide ^H6213 for my own household ^H1004 also ^H1571?” 31 So he said ^H559, “What ^H4100 shall I give ^H5414 you?” And Jacob ^H3290 said ^H559, “You shall not give ^H5414 me anything ^H3972. If ^H518 you will do ^H6213 this ^H2088 one thing ^H1697 for me, I will again ^H7725 pasture ^H7462 and keep ^H8104 your flock ^H6629: 32 let me pass ^H5674 through your entire ^H3605 flock ^H6629 today ^H3117, removing ^H5493 from there ^H8033 every ^H3605 speckled ^H5348 or spotted ^H2921 sheep ^H7716 and every ^H3605 black ^H2345 sheep ^H7716 among the lambs ^H3775, and the spotted ^H2921 or speckled ^H5348 among the goats ^H5795; and those shall be my wages ^H7939. 33 So my [fn]honesty ^H6666 will answer ^H6030 for me later ^H4279 H3117, when ^H3588 you come ^H935 concerning ^H5921 my [fn]wages ^H7939. Every ^H3605 one ^H3605 that is not speckled ^H5348 or spotted ^H2921 among the goats ^H5795, or black ^H2345 among the lambs ^H3775, if found with me, will be considered stolen ^H1589.” 34 Laban ^H3837 said ^H559, “[fn]Good ^H2005, let it be according to your word ^H1697.” 35 So he removed ^H5493 on that day ^H3117 the striped ^H6124 or spotted ^H2921 male ^H8495 goats ^H8495, and all ^H3605 the speckled ^H5348 or spotted ^H2921 female ^H5795 goats ^H5795, every ^H3605 one ^H3605 with white ^H3836 on it, and all ^H3605 the black ^H2345 ones ^H2345 among the sheep ^H3775, and put ^H5414 them in the [fn]care ^H3027 of his sons ^H1121. 36 And he put ^H7760 a distance of three ^H7969 days’ ^H3117 journey ^H1870 between ^H996 himself and Jacob ^H3290, and Jacob ^H3290 fed ^H7462 the rest ^H3498 of Laban’s ^H3837 flocks ^H6629.

37 Then Jacob ^H3290 [fn]took ^H3947 fresh ^H3892 rods ^H4731 of poplar ^H3839, almond ^H3869, and plane ^H6196 trees ^H6196, and peeled ^H6478 white ^H3836 stripes ^H6479 in them, exposing ^H4286 the white ^H3836 that was [fn]in the rods ^H4731. 38 He set ^H3322 the rods ^H4731 which ^H834 he had peeled ^H6478 in front ^H5227 of the flocks ^H6629 in the drinking ^H7298 troughs ^H7298, that is, in the watering ^H4325 channels ^H8268 where ^H834 the flocks ^H6629 came ^H935 to drink ^H8354; and they mated ^H3179 when they came ^H935 to drink ^H8354. 39 So the flocks ^H6629 mated ^H3179 by the rods ^H4731, and the flocks ^H6629 delivered ^H3205 striped ^H6124, speckled ^H5348, and spotted ^H2921 offspring. 40 Then Jacob ^H3290 separated ^H6504 the lambs ^H3775, and [fn]made ^H5414 the flocks ^H6629 face ^H6440 toward ^H413 the striped ^H6124 and all ^H3605 the black ^H2345 in the flock ^H6629 of Laban ^H3837; and he put ^H7896 his own herds ^H5739 apart ^H905, and did not put ^H7896 them with Laban’s ^H3837 flock ^H6629. 41 Moreover, whenever ^H3605 the stronger ^H7194 of the flock ^H6629 were mating ^H3179, Jacob ^H3290 would place ^H7760 the rods ^H4731 in the sight ^H5869 of the flock ^H6629 in the drinking ^H7298 troughs ^H7298, so that they would mate ^H3179 by the rods ^H4731; 42 but when the flock ^H6629 was sickly ^H5848, he did not put ^H7760 them in; so the sickly ^H5848 were Laban’s ^H3837, and the stronger ^H7194 were Jacob’s ^H3290. 43 So the man ^H376 [fn]became ^H6555 exceedingly ^H3966 prosperous ^H6555, and had ^H1961 large ^H7227 flocks ^H6629, and female ^H8198 and male ^H5650 servants ^H5650 H8198, and camels ^H1581 and donkeys ^H2543.
