The Treachery of Jacob’s Sons

1 Now Dinah ^H1783 the daughter ^H1323 of Leah ^H3812, whom ^H834 she had borne ^H3205 to Jacob ^H3290, went ^H3318 out ^H3318 to [fn]visit ^H7200 the daughters ^H1323 of the land ^H776.

2 When Shechem ^H7927 the son ^H1121 of Hamor ^H2544 the Hivite ^H2340, the prince ^H5387 of the land ^H776, saw ^H7200 her, he took ^H3947 her and lay ^H7901 with her and raped ^H6031 her. 3 But [fn]he was deeply ^H1692 attracted ^H1692 to Dinah ^H1783 the daughter ^H1323 of Jacob ^H3290, and he loved ^H157 the girl ^H5291 and [fn]spoke ^H1696 tenderly ^H3820 to her. 4 So Shechem ^H7927 spoke ^H559 to his father ^H1 Hamor ^H2544, saying ^H559, “Get ^H3947 me this ^H2088 young ^H3207 woman ^H3207 as a wife ^H802.” 5 Now Jacob ^H3290 heard ^H8085 that he had defiled ^H2930 his daughter ^H1323 Dinah ^H1783; but his sons ^H1121 were with his livestock ^H4735 in the field ^H7704, so Jacob ^H3290 said ^H2790 nothing ^H2790 until ^H5704 they came ^H935 in ^H935. 6 Then Hamor ^H2544 the father ^H1 of Shechem ^H7927 went ^H3318 out ^H3318 to Jacob ^H3290 to speak ^H1696 with him. 7 Now the sons ^H1121 of Jacob ^H3290 came ^H935 in ^H935 from the field ^H7704 when they heard ^H8085 about it; and the men ^H376 were grieved ^H6087, and they were ^H2734 very ^H3966 angry ^H2734 because ^H3588 he had done ^H6213 a [fn]disgraceful ^H5039 thing ^H5039 in Israel ^H3478 by [fn]sleeping ^H7901 with Jacob’s ^H3290 daughter ^H1323, for such ^H3651 a ^H3651 thing ^H3651 ought not to be done ^H6213.

8 But Hamor ^H2544 spoke ^H1696 with them, saying ^H559, “The soul ^H5315 of my son ^H1121 Shechem ^H7927 longs ^H2836 for your daughter ^H1323; please ^H4994 give ^H5414 her to him [fn]in marriage ^H802. 9 And intermarry ^H2859 with us; give ^H5414 your daughters ^H1323 to us and take ^H3947 our daughters ^H1323 for yourselves. 10 So you will live ^H3427 with us, and the land ^H776 shall be [fn]open ^H6440 to you; live ^H3427 and trade ^H5503 in it and acquire ^H270 property ^H270 in it.” 11 Shechem ^H7927 also said ^H559 to her father ^H1 and to her brothers ^H251, “Let me find ^H4672 favor ^H2580 in your sight ^H5869, and I will give ^H5414 whatever ^H834 you tell ^H559 me. 12 Demand ^H7235 of me ever so ^H3966 much ^H7235 H3966 bridal ^H4119 payment ^H4119 and gift ^H4976, and I will give ^H5414 whatever you tell ^H559 me; but give ^H5414 me the girl ^H5291 [fn]in marriage ^H802.”

13 But Jacob’s ^H3290 sons ^H1121 answered ^H6030 H1696 Shechem ^H7927 and his father ^H1 Hamor ^H2544 with deceit ^H4820, because ^H834 he had defiled ^H2930 their sister ^H269 Dinah ^H1783. 14 They said ^H559 to them, “We cannot ^H3201 H3808 do ^H6213 this ^H2088 thing ^H1697, that is, give ^H5414 our sister ^H269 to a man ^H376 who ^H834 is uncircumcised ^H6190, for that would be a disgrace ^H2781 to us. 15 Only ^H389 on this ^H2088 condition will we consent ^H225 to you: if ^H518 you will become ^H1961 like ^H3644 us, in that every ^H3605 male ^H2145 of you will be circumcised ^H4135, 16 then we will give ^H5414 our daughters ^H1323 to you, and we will take ^H3947 your daughters ^H1323 for ourselves, and we will live ^H3427 with you and become ^H1961 one ^H259 people ^H5971. 17 But if ^H518 you do not listen ^H8085 to us to be circumcised ^H4135, then we will take ^H3947 our daughter ^H1323 and go ^H1980.”

18 Now their words ^H1697 seemed ^H3190 [fn]reasonable ^H3190 to Hamor ^H2544 and Shechem ^H7927, Hamor’s ^H2544 son ^H1121. 19 The young ^H5288 man ^H5288 did not delay ^H309 to do ^H6213 [fn]this ^H1697, because ^H3588 he was delighted ^H2654 with Jacob’s ^H3290 daughter ^H1323. Now he was more ^H4480 respected ^H3513 than ^H4480 all ^H3605 the household ^H1004 of his father ^H1. 20 So Hamor ^H2544 and his son ^H1121 Shechem ^H7927 came ^H935 to the gate ^H8179 of their city ^H5892 and spoke ^H1696 to the people ^H376 of their city ^H5892, saying ^H559, 21 “These ^H428 men ^H376 are [fn]friendly ^H8003 to us; therefore let them live ^H3427 in the land ^H776 and trade ^H5503 in it, for behold ^H2009, the land ^H776 is [fn]large ^H7342 H3027 enough ^H3027 for them. We will take ^H3947 their daughters ^H1323 [fn]in marriage ^H802, and give ^H5414 our daughters ^H1323 to them. 22 Only ^H389 on this ^H2088 condition will the men ^H376 consent ^H225 to us to live ^H3427 with us, to become ^H1961 one ^H259 people ^H5971: that every ^H3605 male ^H2145 among us be circumcised ^H4135 just ^H834 as ^H834 they are circumcised ^H4135. 23 Will their livestock ^H4735 and their property ^H7075 and all ^H3605 their animals ^H929 not be ours? Let’s just ^H389 consent ^H225 to them, and they will live ^H3427 with us.” 24 All ^H3605 who went ^H3318 out ^H3318 of the gate ^H8179 of his city ^H5892 listened ^H8085 to Hamor ^H2544 and to his son ^H1121 Shechem ^H7927, and every ^H3605 male ^H2145 was circumcised ^H4135, all ^H3605 who went ^H3318 out ^H3318 of the gate ^H8179 of his city ^H5892.

25 Now it came ^H1961 about ^H1961 on the third ^H7992 day ^H3117, when they were ^H3510 in ^H3510 pain ^H3510, that two ^H8147 of Jacob’s ^H3290 sons ^H1121—Simeon ^H8095 and Levi ^H3878, Dinah’s ^H1783 brothers ^H251—each ^H376 took ^H3947 his sword ^H2719 and came ^H935 upon the city ^H5892 undetected ^H983, and killed ^H2026 every ^H3605 male ^H2145. 26 They killed ^H2026 Hamor ^H2544 and his son ^H1121 Shechem ^H7927 with the edge ^H6310 of the sword ^H2719, and took ^H3947 Dinah ^H1783 from Shechem’s ^H7927 house ^H1004, and left ^H3318. 27 Jacob’s ^H3290 sons ^H1121 came ^H935 upon those killed ^H2491 and looted ^H962 the city ^H5892, because ^H834 they had defiled ^H2930 their sister ^H269. 28 They took ^H3947 their flocks ^H6629, their herds ^H1241, and their donkeys ^H2543, and that which ^H834 was in the city ^H5892 and that which ^H834 was in the field ^H7704; 29 and they captured ^H7617 and looted ^H962 all ^H3605 their wealth ^H2428 and all ^H3605 their little ^H2945 ones ^H2945 and their wives ^H802, even everything ^H3605 that was in the houses ^H1004. 30 Then Jacob ^H3290 said ^H559 to Simeon ^H8095 and Levi ^H3878, “You have brought ^H5916 trouble ^H5916 on ^H5916 me by making ^H887 me repulsive ^H887 among the inhabitants ^H3427 of the land ^H776, among the Canaanites ^H3669 and the Perizzites ^H6522; and [fn]since my men ^H4962 are few ^H4962 in number ^H4557, they will band ^H622 together ^H622 against ^H5921 me and [fn]attack ^H5221 me, and I will be destroyed ^H8045, I and my household ^H1004!” 31 But they said ^H559, “Should he [fn]treat ^H6213 our sister ^H269 like a prostitute ^H2181?”
