Jonah’s Displeasure Rebuked
1 But it greatly H1419 displeased H7489 H7451 Jonah H3124, and he became H2734 angry H2734.
2 Then he prayed H6419 to the LORD H3068 and said H559, “Please H577 LORD H3068, was this H2088 not [fn]what H1697 I said H1696 when H5704 I was still H5704 in my own country H127? Therefore H5921 H3651 in H6923 anticipation H6923 of this I fled H1272 to Tarshish H8659, since H3588 I knew H3045 that You are a gracious H2587 and compassionate H7349 God H410, slow H750 to anger H639 and abundant H7227 in mercy H2617, and One who relents H5162 of disaster H7451. 3 So now H6258, LORD H3068, please H4994 take H3947 my [fn]life H5315 from me, for death H4194 is better H2896 to me than H4480 life H2416.” 4 But the LORD H3068 said H559, “Do you have H3190 a good H3190 reason H3190 to be H2734 angry H2734?”
5 Then Jonah H3124 left H3318 the city H5892 and sat H3427 down H3427 east H6924 of [fn]it. There H8033 he made H6213 a shelter H5521 for himself and sat H3427 under H8478 it in the shade H6738, until H5704 H834 he could see H7200 what H4100 would happen H1961 in the city H5892. 6 So the LORD H3068 God H430 designated H4487 a [fn]plant H7021, and it grew H5927 up H5927 over H4480 H5921 Jonah H3124 to be a shade H6738 over H5921 his head H7218, to [fn]relieve H5337 him of his discomfort H7451. And Jonah H3124 [fn]was overjoyed H8057 H1419 H8055 about H5921 the plant H7021. 7 But God H430 designated H4487 a worm H8439 when dawn H7837 came H5927 the next H4283 day H4283, and it attacked H5221 the plant H7021 and it withered H3001. 8 And when the sun H8121 came H2224 up God H430 designated H4487 a scorching H2759 east H6921 wind H7307, and the sun H8121 beat H5221 down H5921 on Jonah’s H3124 head H7218 so that he became H5968 faint H5968, and he begged H7592 with all his soul H5315 to die H4191, saying H559, “Death H4194 is better H2896 to me than H4480 life H2416!”
9 But God H430 said H559 to Jonah H3124, “Do you have H3190 a good H3190 reason H3190 to be H2734 angry H2734 about H5921 the plant H7021?” And he said H559, “I have H3190 good H3190 reason H3190 to be H2734 angry H2734, even to the point H5704 of death H4194!” 10 Then the LORD H3068 said H559, “You had H2347 compassion H2347 on the plant H7021, for which H834 you did not work H5998 and which you did not cause to grow H1431, which H7945 [fn]came H1961 up overnight H1121 H3915 and perished H6 [fn]overnight H1121 H3915. 11 Should I not also have H2347 compassion H2347 on Nineveh H5210, the great H1419 city H5892 in which H834 there H3426 are H3426 more H7235 than H4480 120,000 H8147 H6240 H7239 people H120, who H834 do not know H3045 the difference between H996 their right H3225 hand H3225 and their left H8040, as well as many H7227 animals H929?”
