The Overthrow of Nineveh
1 [fn]The one H4650 who H4650 scatters H4650 has come H5927 up H5927 against H5921 [fn]you.
Keep H5341 watch H5341 over H5341 the fortress H4694, watch H6822 the road H1870;
[fn]Bind H2388 up your waist H4975, [fn]summon H553 all H3966 your strength H3581.
2 For the LORD H3068 will restore H7725 the splendor H1347 of Jacob H3290
Like the splendor H1347 of Israel H3478,
Even though H3588 destroyers H1238 have laid H1238 waste H1238 to them
And ruined H7843 their vines H2156.
3 The shields H4043 of [fn]his warriors H1368 are dyed H119 red H119,
The warriors H376 H2428 are dressed H8529 in H8529 scarlet H8529,
The chariots H7393 are fitted with [fn]flashing H784 steel H6393
[fn]When H3117 he is prepared H3559 to march,
And the juniper H1265 spears H1265 are brandished H7477.
4 The chariots H7393 drive H1984 wildly H1984 in the streets H2351,
They rush H8264 around H8264 in the [fn]public H7339 squares H7339;
Their appearance H4758 is like torches H3940,
They drive H7323 back H7323 and H7323 forth H7323 like lightning H1300 flashes H1300.
5 He remembers H2142 his officers H117;
They stumble H3782 in their advance H1979,
They hurry H4116 to her wall H2346,
And the [fn]mantelet H5526 is set H3559 up.
6 The gates H8179 of the rivers H5104 are opened H6605
And the palace H1964 sways H4127 back H4127 and H4127 forth H4127.
7 It is set H5324:
She is stripped H1540, she is led H5927 away H5927,
And her slave H519 women H519 are sobbing H5090 like the sound H6963 of doves H3123,
Beating H8608 their [fn]breasts H3824.
8 Though Nineveh H5210 was like a pool H1295 of water H4325 throughout H4480 her days H3117,
Yet they are fleeing H5127;
But no H369 one H369 turns H6437 back H6437.
9 Plunder H962 the silver H3701,
For there H369 is H369 no H369 end H7097 to the treasure H8499—
Wealth H3519 from every H3605 kind of desirable H2532 object H3627.
10 She is emptied H950! Yes, she is desolate H4003 and waste H1110!
Hearts H3820 are melting H4549 and knees H1290 wobbling H6375!
Also trembling H2479 is in [fn]the entire H3605 body H4975,
And all H3605 their faces H6440 have become H6908 pale H6289!
11 Where H346 is the den H4583 of the lions H738
And the feeding H4829 place H4829 of the young H3715 lions H3715,
Where H834 H8033 the lion H738, lioness H3833, and lion’s H738 cub H1482 went H1980
With nothing H369 to disturb H2729 them?
12 The lion H738 tore H2963 enough H1767 for his cubs H1484,
[fn]Killed H2614 enough prey for his lionesses H3833,
And filled H4390 his lairs H2356 with prey H2964
And his dens H4585 with torn H2966 flesh H2966.
13 “Behold H2009, I am against H413 you,” declares H5002 the LORD H3068 of armies H6635. “I will burn H1197 up H1197 her chariots H7393 in smoke H6227, and a sword H2719 will devour H398 your young H3715 lions H3715; I will eliminate H3772 your prey H2964 from the land H776, and no H3808 longer H5750 will the voice H6963 of your messengers H4397 be heard H8085.”
