Ruth Gleans in Boaz’s Field
1 Now Naomi H5281 had [fn]a relative H4129 of her husband H376, a [fn]man H376 of great H1368 wealth H2428, of the family H4940 of Elimelech H458, whose name H8034 was Boaz H1162.
2 And Ruth H7327 the Moabitess H4125 said H559 to Naomi H5281, “Please H4994 let me go H1980 to the field H7704 and glean H3950 among the ears H7641 of H7641 grain H7641 following H310 one in whose H834 eyes H5869 I may find H4672 favor H2580.” And she said H559 to her, “Go H1980, my daughter H1323.” 3 So she left H1980 and went H935 and gleaned H3950 in the field H7704 after H310 the reapers H7114; and [fn]she happened H7136 H4745 to H7136 come H7136 to the portion H2513 of the field H7704 belonging to Boaz H1162, who H834 was of the family H4940 of Elimelech H458. 4 Now behold H2009, Boaz H1162 came H935 from Bethlehem H1035 and said H559 to the reapers H7114, “May the LORD H3068 be with you.” And they said H559 to him, “May the LORD H3068 bless H1288 you.” 5 Then Boaz H1162 said H559 to his servant H5288 who was H5324 [fn]in H5324 H5921 charge H5324 H5921 of the reapers H7114, “Whose H4310 young H5291 woman H5291 is this H2088?” 6 And the servant H5288 [fn]in H5324 H5921 charge H5324 H5921 of the reapers H7114 replied H6030, “She is the young H5291 Moabite H4125 woman H5291 who returned H7725 with Naomi H5281 from the land H7704 of Moab H4124. 7 And she said H559, ‘Please H4994 let me glean H3950 and gather H622 after H310 the reapers H7114 among the sheaves H6016.’ So she came H935 and has remained H5975 from the morning H1242 until H5704 now H6258; she has been sitting H3427 in the house H1004 for a little H4592 while H4592.”
8 Then Boaz H1162 said H559 to Ruth H7327, “[fn]Listen H8085 carefully H3808, my daughter H1323. Do not go H1980 to glean H3950 in another H312 field H7704; furthermore H1571, do not go H5674 on H5674 from this H2088 one H2088, but join H1692 H5973 my young H5291 women H5291 here H3541. 9 Keep your eyes H5869 on the field H7704 which H834 they reap H7114, and go H1980 after H310 them. Indeed H3808, I have ordered H6680 the servants H5288 not to touch H5060 you. When you are H6770 thirsty H6770, go H1980 to the [fn]water H3627 jars H3627 and drink H8354 from what H834 the servants H5288 draw H7579.” 10 Then she fell H5307 on her face H6440, bowing H2331 to the ground H776, and said H559 to him, “Why H4069 have I found H4672 favor H2580 in your sight H5869 that you should take H5234 notice H5234 of me, since I am a foreigner H5237?” 11 Boaz H1162 replied H6030 to her, “All H3605 that you have done H6213 for your mother-in-law H2545 after H310 the death H4194 of your husband H376 has been fully H5046 reported H5046 to me, and how you left H5800 your father H1 and your mother H517 and the land H776 of your birth H4138, and came H1980 to a people H5971 that you did not previously H8543 H8032 know H3045. 12 May the LORD H3068 reward H7999 your [fn]work H6467, and may your wages H4909 be full H8003 from the LORD H3068, the God H430 of Israel H3478, under H8478 whose H834 wings H3671 you have come H935 to take H2620 refuge H2620.” 13 Then she said H559, “I have found H4672 favor H2580 in your sight H5869, my lord H113, for you have comforted H5162 me and indeed H3588 have spoken H1696 [fn]kindly H3820 to your servant H8198, though I am H1961 not like one H259 of your female H8198 servants H8198.”
14 And at mealtime H6256 H400 Boaz H1162 said H559 to her, “[fn]Come H5066 here H1988, that you may eat H398 of the bread H3899 and dip H2881 your piece H6595 of H6595 bread H6595 in the vinegar H2558.” So she sat H3427 beside H4480 H6654 the reapers H7114; and he served H6642 her roasted H7039 grain H7039, and she ate H398 and was H7646 satisfied H7646 and had H3498 some left H3498. 15 When she got H6965 up H6965 to glean H3950, Boaz H1162 commanded H6680 his servants H5288, saying H559, “Let her glean H3950 even H1571 among H996 the sheaves H6016, and do not [fn]insult H3637 her. 16 Also H1571 you are to purposely H7997 slip H7997 out H7997 for her some grain from the bundles H6653 and leave H5800 it so that she may glean H3950, and do not rebuke H1605 her.”
17 So she gleaned H3950 in the field H7704 until H5704 evening H6153. Then she beat H2251 out H2251 what H834 she had gleaned H3950, and it was about an [fn]ephah H374 of barley H8184. 18 And she picked H5375 it up H5375 and went H935 into the city H5892, and her mother-in-law H2545 saw H7200 what H834 she had gleaned H3950. She also took H3318 some out H3318 and gave H5414 [fn]Naomi what H834 she had H3498 left H3498 after H4480 [fn]she was satisfied H7648. 19 Her mother-in-law H2545 then said H559 to her, “Where H375 did you glean H3950 today H3117 and where H575 did you work H6213? May he who took H5234 notice H5234 of you be blessed H1288.” So she told H5046 her mother-in-law H2545 with whom H834 she had worked H6213, and said H559, “The name H8034 of the man H376 with whom H834 I worked H6213 today H3117 is Boaz H1162.” 20 Naomi H5281 said H559 to her daughter-in-law H3618, “May he be blessed H1288 of the LORD H3068 who H834 has not withdrawn H5800 His kindness H2617 from the living H2416 and from the dead H4191.” Again Naomi H5281 said H559 to her, “The man H376 is our relative H7138; he is one of our redeemers H1350.” 21 Then Ruth H7327 the Moabitess H4125 said H559, “[fn]Furthermore H1571, he said H559 to me, ‘You are to stay H1692 close H1692 to my servants H5288 until H5704 H518 they have finished H3615 all H3605 my harvest H7105.’” 22 And Naomi H5281 said H559 to her daughter-in-law H3618 Ruth H7327, “It is good H2896, my daughter H1323, that you go H3318 out H3318 with his young H5291 women H5291, so that others do not assault H6293 you in another H312 field H7704.” 23 So she stayed H1692 close H1692 by the young H5291 women H5291 of Boaz H1162 in order to glean H3950 until H5704 the end H3615 of the barley H8184 harvest H7105 and the wheat H2406 harvest H7105. And she lived H3427 with her mother-in-law H2545.
