Vine's Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words

Latter:

akin to opse and opsios (see LATE), denotes "late," or "latter," and is used of "the latter rain" in Jam 5:7 (the most authentic mss. omit huetos, "rain;" some have karpos, "fruit"); this rain falls in March and April, just before the harvest, in contrast to the early rain, in October. In the Sept., Deu 11:14; Pro 16:15; Jer 5:24; Hsa 6:3; Joe 2:23; Zec 10:1.

Note: For "latter" (husteros) in the AV of 1Ti 4:1 see LATER, and for 2Pe 2:20 see LAST.
