1 | Strong's Number: g192 | Greek: akrasia |
Excess:
lit. denotes "want of strength" (a, negative, kratos, "strength"), hence, "want of self-control, incontinence," Mat 23:25, "excess;" 1Cr 7:5, "incontinency." Cp. akrates, "powerless, incontinent," 2Ti 3:3, RV, "without self-control."
2 | Strong's Number: g401 | Greek: anachusis |
Excess:
lit., "a pouring out, overflowing" (akin to anacheo, "to pour out"), is used metaphorically in 1Pe 4:4, "excess," said of the riotous conduct described in ver. 3.
Notes:
(1) Asotia denotes "prodigality, profligacy, riot" (from a, negative, and sozo, "to save"); it is translated "riot" in Eph 5:18, RV, for AV, "excess;" in Tts 1:6; 1Pe 4:4, "riot" in AV and RV. See RIOT. Cp. the adverb asotos, "wastefully," "in riotous living," Luk 15:13. A synonymous noun is aselgeia, "lasciviousness, outrageous conduct, wanton violence."
(2) In 1Pe 4:3, oinophlugia, "drunkenness, debauchery" (oinos, "wine," phluo, "to bubble up, overflow"), is rendered "excess of wine," AV (RV, "winebibbings").
The Blue Letter Bible ministry and the BLB Institute hold to the historical, conservative Christian faith, which includes a firm belief in the inerrancy of Scripture. Since the text and audio content provided by BLB represent a range of evangelical traditions, all of the ideas and principles conveyed in the resource materials are not necessarily affirmed, in total, by this ministry.
