denotes "nourishment, food" (akin to trepho, "to rear, nourish, feed"); it is used literally, in the Gospels, Acts and Jam 2:15; metaphorically, in Hbr 5:12, 14, RV, "(solid) food," AV, "(strong) meat," i.e., deeper subjects of the faith than that of elementary instruction. The word is always rendered "food" in the RV, where the AV has "meat;" e.g., Mat 3:4; 6:25; 10:10; 24:45; Luk 12:23; Jhn 4:8; Act 2:46, "did take their food," RV (AV, "did eat their meat"); Act 9:19, "took food;" Act 27:33, 34, 36. The AV also has "food" in Act 14:17; Jam 2:15.
