I. "THEREFORE" THIS WORD ALWAYS TAKES US BACK TO THE PREVIOUS THOUGHTS.
A. The thought here is laying up treasures on earth. Why do people seek to lay up treasures on the earth?
1. Because they are fearful or worried about the future.
2. When I am no longer able to work, will I have enough to survive.
3. I do not believe that the Lord is saying that we should not seek to provide for our retirement years.
4. I think by the context that the thought is, we are not to worry about the future.
B. "Take no thought for your life."
1. The Greek word for thought has as it's root, anxious, so Jesus is saying, "Don't be worried."
2. What is it that people worry about the most?
a. Some worry about the past. Did I say the right thing, did I make the right decision, did I do the right thing?
b. Many worry about the present. What shall I do, where shall I go?
c. Most are worried about the future. Yesterday is past, today is almost over. I am still, here, I have made it this far. I had dinner tonight. I have a place to sleep tonight. But what about tomorrow? How will I survive, how will I eat, how will I pay the bills, how will I pay the rent?
d. Incidently, if any of you are hungry tonight because you did not have money for dinner, see me after church and I will see that you have dinner tonight.
e. You may say, "What about tomorrow night?" That is not here yet, who knows how God will supply for that? Jesus said to pray, "Give us this day our daily bread."
3. This is the kind of worry that Jesus is going to address in the coming passages.
C. "What you shall eat, what you shall drink."
1. Two things are necessary to sustain life, food and water.
2. These things are basic for survival, thus they become the main concern for a person who has no money.
3. The Hippies certainly provided us with interesting insights on how to survive without working. In the communal houses, where everything was shared, they would have what they called the garbage runs. They would go to the back of the large chain grocery stores and pick up the throw away food. Vegetables and fruit that had a blemishes so that it was not saleable, but still good, the great amount of trimmings of celery, lettuce, and other vegetables. They would go fishing. Survival was a challenge to them of their ingenuity.
D. "Don't worry about your body, what you shall put on."
1. I notice that all of you have clothes on here tonight.
2. We often hear of a person being so destitute that all that they have is the shirt on their back. At least they have a shirt on their back. How many shirts can you wear at one time?
3. We should not have our treasure in our wardrobe closet. It is not necessary to have the latest fashions.
E. "Life is more that food, and the body more than clothes."
1. Food is not the most important thing in life.
2. A right relationship with God is far more important than your food.
3. How narrow and restricted is the life of the person whose main interests are in fashion and food.
II. WHAT IS THE CURE FOR THIS WORRY ABOUT FOOD?
A. First of all by looking at the birds.
1. They do not plant gardens, or fields.
2. They do not harvest crops.
3. They do not store food in their barns.
4. Yet your heavenly Father feeds them.
a. They are not His children, He is not their Father, He is their creator.
b. If He feeds the birds which are not His children, how much more will He feed His child?
5. You are much better than they.
a. They only have a Creator, creation relationship.
b. You have a Father, son, or daughter relationship.
B. Second, think things through.
1. What good does worry do?
a. Which of you who are worried about being short, can by your worrying add 18 inches to your height?
b. All the worry in the world will not help you to grow even one inch.
III. WHAT IS THE CURE FOR THE WORRY ABOUT CLOTHES?
A. Jesus asked, "Why are you worried about your clothes?"
B. The cure? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow.
1. They do not toil. That is they do not raise cotton crops.
2. They do not spin. This is something that is foreign to us. The ladies used to have to make their own material before they could even make their clothes.
3. They used to have what were known as spinning wheels, you would spin the wool or cotton into yarn or thread. You would then weave the yarn in the loom to make the material for the garment you were proposing to make.
C. Consider this, "Solomon with all of his glory and wealth was not as beautifully clothed as these lilies in the field.
1. The lilies of the field were thought to be the anemones that grow so profusely around the Sea of Galilee. They are a beautiful red, some are white, while others have a blue cast to them. They are gorgeous as they carpet the fields in the brilliant red colors.
2. Solomon with all of his wealth and splendor was not clothed as beautifully as these flowers.
IV. THE CONCLUSION OF THE ISSUE.
A. If God who is your Father so clothes the grass of the field which blossoms today, but is dried up and burned in the ovens tomorrow shall He not much more see that you have clothing?
1. Grass is one of the elementary forms of life. It has body, but no soul or spirit. It is below the animal kingdom.
2. You are of the highest order of observed creation. Far above the vegetation, above the animals, you were created in the likeness of God.
3. The argument is known as going from the lesser to the greater.
4. If God will clothe the grass which is to soon perish, will He not much more see that you are clothed?
