Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you."
(Hebrews 13:5 ESV)

We may experience seasons of questioning God’s nearness, but we learn from this Bible verse that we will never know the desperate loneliness of being forsaken by Him. This promise from Joshua 1:5 and quoted in Hebrews 13:5, contains the sum and substance of all promises that belong to those who trust in Christ. The Lord will not and cannot leave His people, because of His eternal relationship to them. Believers have the gracious presence of God with them in life, at death, and forever. Rejoice with joy unspeakable that He is with you always.

"I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.
(John 15:5 NIV)

We can do nothing of spiritual value without the Lord. He is the vine; and just as the branches receive their life-giving nutrients through the vine, so we as Christians receive the things we need for life from Christ. When a branch is apart from its source of life, it is dead; so it is with us-until we are grafted into the eternal, life-giving vine of Christ. All believers abide in Christ by grace through faith and the salvation He freely offers. it is in Him alone that we are able to bear much fruit.

He will feed His flock like a shepherd; He will gather the lambs with His arm, And carry [them] in His bosom, [And] gently lead those who are with young.
(Isaiah 40:11 NKJV)

Our God and Owner, the sheep of whose pasture we are by creation, has constituted His Son Jesus to be our Shepherd. Christ is the good and gentle Shepherd prophesied by Isaiah, who takes intimate care of all His flocks. His word is food for them to feed on; His ordinances are fields for them to feed in; His ministers are under-shepherds who attend them. He rescues His lambs when they wander, helps them up when they fall, and will gather them home to Himself at last.

For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
(1 Corinthians 1:18 NKJV)

Many reject the message of the cross because the idea of being “saved” through a crucified man seems foolish—without knowing the Man on that cross was the Son of God! The words, “are perishing” and “are being saved,” are relevant because every person is moving in one of those two directions. For all who trust in the cross of Christ, this message becomes the actual power of God. Preaching a high moral standard is not preaching the Gospel. The message of the cross is the Gospel and there is inherent spiritual power in sharing it, when it is received with faith.

The LORD is God, and he has made his light to shine upon us. Bind the festal sacrifice with cords, up to the horns of the altar!
(Psalm 118:27 ESV)

The privilege we enjoy, in Jesus Christ, is that He has given us the knowledge of Himself and His will. He has shined His favor upon us, by pouring the light of His countenance into our lives. We can rejoice that He has given us the hope of His everlasting light in heaven, which even now gives light to our souls.

So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.
(1 Corinthians 3:7 NIV)

A farmer may plant and water seeds, but he cannot make anything grow. The farmer must wait and trust in the miracle of life, which only God can produce. We must do the same when ministering the Gospel with others. True spiritual fruitfulness only happens when we are peacefully content to do what God has called us to do—then He brings forth new spiritual life.

I will meditate on Your precepts, And contemplate Your ways.
(Psalm 119:15 NKJV)

Meditating on God’s Word is a blessed employment, and it will repay a thousand fold. The Bible leads us to God because by it He comes near unto men, revealing Himself to them. Thinking upon God’s precepts and considering His ways makes the mind wise, the affections warm, the soul flourish, and the communion most blessed.

But Jesus said, "Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven."
(Matthew 19:14 NKJV)

The parents’ faith, in bringing their little children to Jesus, testified of their respect for Him and a desire for His blessing. Jesus showed concern for the children, knowing the malignant influences of Adam’s inherent sin, and also knowing their need for the riches of His grace. Jesus welcomed the little lambs of His flock, making provision for them in His kingdom. As trustees, parents are empowered to act on behalf of their children, and we cannot do better for them than to commit them to the Lord Jesus.

And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?
(Mark 4:41 KJV)

The frightened disciples asked a good question: “Who can this be?” It could only have been the LORD Jehovah, whose almighty power and authority created the sea and controls it. In the span of a few moments, the disciples saw both the complete humanity of Jesus and the fullness of His deity. They saw Jesus for who He is—truly man and truly God.

For You light my lamp; The LORD my God illumines my darkness.
(Psalm 18:28 NASB)

The earth is a haven for darkness and the things that lurk and creep. Foul is the world and thick is its shadow. The dim murk of this fallen land threatens all that is living and fair. We would be swallowed and bound in slavery to that dark roiling but that we are become children of light. The Father of Light guides our paths and so our ways become clear. His Son is the Light of the world and the darkness flees from before His glory! Abide in Him, dear believer, and rejoice that you can now see!

On this mountain the LORD Almighty will prepare a feast of rich food for all peoples, a banquet of aged wine--the best of meats and the finest of wines.
(Isaiah 25:6 NIV)

Isaiah refers to Mount Zion as a type and figure of the Church, and the Feast is Christ. Those who belong to this holy mountain are the LORD’s, and the excellency of His Feast consists in the communion of the Saints. We come to His table for the feeding of our bodies, but much more in regard for our souls. Only Christ is able to prepare this heavenly banquet for His Church, and His love is the best course served. The more we partake of the sweetness of Christ, the more we are able to love one another.

"But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, [Though] you are little among the thousands of Judah, [Yet] out of you shall come forth to Me The One to be Ruler in Israel, Whose goings forth [are] from of old, From everlasting."
(Micah 5:2 NKJV)

The incarnation of Jesus Christ was prophesied by Micah some 700 years before His birth in Bethlehem. The Messiah and Ruler of Israel had “goings forth” for His people long before He appeared upon the stage of time. He has delighted in His people “from everlasting.” Ponder then, since He has from everlasting been going forth to save you, will He lose you now? Not now or ever! All praises to our Savior, whose birth we celebrate this month as our glorious King of Kings.
