在这一部分中，先知阐述了主将如何对居住在撒玛利亚的不顺服的以色列人执行他的审判。上帝的审判将使以色列人口大批减少，以至于如果十个人留在一间房子里，他们就会死。换句话说，阿摩司设想了一所房子，里面有十个人聚集在一起寻求安全，试图逃避上帝的审判。但他们也会死。
后来，如果某人的叔叔或殡仪承办人（会焚烧尸体的人）来抬起他，将他的骨头从房子中搬出去，他就会因目睹这场灾难而感到非常害怕。出于恐惧，他会对躲在房子最里面的幸存者说，有人和你在一起吗？幸存者会说，没有人。亲戚会回答说，不要作声。因为不可提耶和华的名。上帝的愤怒是如此强烈，以至于撒马利亚的以色列公民数量大大减少，幸存者会被宗主（统治者）上帝的所作所为吓坏，以至于他们不敢提及他的名字，唯恐他们激起他的愤怒，导致他对他们采取进一步的行动。
不提上帝名字的原因在下一节经文中说明：看哪，耶和华要下令将大房子打碎，将小房子打碎。大房子这个词很可能指的是撒马利亚富裕居民的住所。同样，小房子这个词描述了不幸者的住所。这两个术语在这里一起使用，用来描述以色列将被摧毁的每一种房屋。在这两种情况下，都只剩下碎片。
这一事件表明上帝肯定会给以色列带来巨大的、而且是全面的灾难。
