北国以色列在公元前 722 年左右何细亚统治期间被亚述征服（列王纪上 18:9-12）。所罗门统治后，北国以色列与南国犹大分裂，时间约为公元前 930 年（列王纪上 12）。希西家统治下的犹大也遭到亚述的攻击，但上帝保佑犹大不被亚述所击溃（列王纪上 18-19）。亚述于公元前 612 年灭亡，巴比伦成为世界强国。公元前 605 年左右约雅敬统治期间，巴比伦王子尼布甲尼撒征服了南国犹大。同年，尼布甲尼撒的父亲去世后，尼布甲尼撒继位为王。
在以西结书 17:11-21 中，先知耶利米警告以色列人，如果他们遵守与巴比伦的条约，不信任埃及，上帝就会饶恕他们。经文中说，以色列人不会听从这一警告，会违背上帝，破坏与巴比伦的条约。耶利米警告说，这将导致严重的审判。
先知耶利米也警告犹大的统治者，如果他们不停止违抗上帝，就会发生这种情况。在耶利米书第 7 章中，我们看到先知警告犹大，如果他们继续违抗上帝的诫命并继续崇拜其他神（假偶像），那么上帝将允许他们的敌人征服他们。上帝还承诺，如果犹大人民回归他，他将允许他们“永远住在这个地方”：

但犹大人民继续崇拜其他神（甚至将自己的孩子献祭给这些神-耶利米书 7:31；耶利米书 19:4-6），并违背摩西律法长达 23 年，直到上帝承诺的毁灭以尼布甲尼撒的形式到来；正如耶利米所预言的：
“万军之耶和华如此说：‘因为你们没有听从我的命令，看哪，我必召北方的众族，到我的仆人巴比伦王尼布甲尼撒那里，带他们攻击这地和其上的居民，并四围一切的国。’”这是耶和华说的。（耶利米书25：8-9）
正如上帝所承诺的，他利用尼布甲尼撒从他的子民手中夺走了犹大土地。
