但以理选择追随上帝，因此他下定决心，不让国王的佳肴和国王所喝的酒玷污自己。摩西律法禁止但以理吃某些食物和喝某些饮料，尤其是那些没有按照上帝命令的方式正确烹制的食物和饮料（但以理被命令食用的尼布甲尼撒的食物和饮料肯定不是按照上帝的命令烹制的）。许多学者认为，这些酒（可能还有大部分食物）是为祭祀巴比伦诸神而准备的。因此，但以理向太监长寻求许可，以免吃国王的食物而违抗上帝。因为上帝让但以理在太监长面前蒙恩惠和怜悯，所以太监长听从了尼布甲尼撒长的话，并想满足但以理的愿望。
但以理本可以固执己见，但他为主人谋福利，并请求许可。但他们担心，如果但以理和他的朋友不吃国王指定的食物，他们在国王面前会显得虚弱、瘦弱和病态。但以理既为自己的福利，也为他们的福利，并建议他们进行一段试用期， “请你试验仆人十天，给我们一些蔬菜吃，水喝。然后让我们在王面前看看我们的面貌，以及吃王精选食物的年轻人的面貌。”
