尽管大流士的统治者用诡计让他签署了法令，但丹尼尔仍然坚持每天祈祷三次的习惯。统治者以丹尼尔刚刚签署的法律为由在大流士国王面前指控他。大流士别无选择，只能将丹尼尔扔进狮子坑。国王满怀悔恨，心烦意乱，整晚禁食不眠。
国王迫不及待地想看看但以理的上帝是否救了他脱离狮子的威胁。天刚破晓，他就起床，急忙赶往狮子坑。当他走近但以理身边时，他用焦虑的声音喊道。国王对但以理说：“永生上帝的仆人但以理啊，你所侍奉的上帝能救你脱离狮子吗？”当大流士把但以理扔进狮子坑时，他表示希望但以理的上帝能救他。现在他要看看结果了。
然后但以理对国王说：“愿王万岁！我的上帝差遣天使封住狮子的口，它们没有伤害我，因为我在他面前无罪。王啊，我对你也没有犯过什么罪。”虽然但以理违反了国王签署的法令，但他在上帝面前没有犯任何罪。他选择继续祈祷，尽管有法律禁止。在新约中，当彼得和使徒们被指示不要传扬基督时，他们回答说：“顺从上帝过于顺从人，是应当的”（使徒行传 5:29）。 尽管上帝指示人们要服从执政当局（罗马书 13），但当执政当局试图使某人违抗上帝时，当然也有例外。大流士被骗签署了法令，不知道这会牵连丹尼尔，丹尼尔也向国王声称自己是无辜的。
于是国王非常高兴，下令将但以理从坑里救出来。于是但以理被从坑里救出来，身上没有发现任何伤痕，因为他信靠他的上帝。但以理得救了，因为他相信上帝会照顾他，他信靠上帝。
于是国王下令，他们把那些恶意指控但以理的人带了过来，把他们和他们的妻子儿女扔进狮子坑里；他们还没到达坑底，狮子就制服了他们，咬碎了他们的骨头。但以理的控告者们设计了整个计划，想欺骗大流士，杀死但以理。然而，他们却以他们为但以理设计的方式死去了。
