摩西接着继续宣讲以色列人应该遵守的一系列律法。这条律法与想要建造新房子的人有关（第 8 节）。这里的要求是建筑工人需要为你的屋顶建造护墙。护墙一词（希伯来语“ma'āqeh”，仅在此处使用）是指防护屏障，在这里它被放置在屋顶边缘周围，以防止人们掉下来。
这种护墙在古代以色列非常必要，因为平屋顶被广泛使用，例如，在温暖的季节作为睡觉的地方，或作为娱乐和放松的地方（约书亚记 2:6；撒母耳记上 9:25；撒母耳记下 11:2；16:22；以赛亚书 22:1；耶利米书 19:13）。因此，除非房主建造某种防护屏障，否则他的家人和访客的生命将面临极大危险。这样做的目的是投资于安全，考虑他人的福祉，不让他们面临致命的危险。
