保罗不仅了解犹太宗教的前前后后，而且在他成为耶稣是基督的信徒之前，他觉得作为犹太人他有责任来追捕那些早期教会的人，并且阻止他们传播福音。这些犹太人将耶稣视为亵渎者（当时耶稣声称自己是神，而这些犹太人相信他不是）。因为这点，他们杀害了耶稣，并且继续搜寻监禁早期教会成员。在使徒行传7、8和9章路加对早期教会的记载中，我们看到了一些从保罗而来的这种迫害。
保罗纵容了用石头打死司提反，司提反因宣告福音而遇害（使徒行传7章）；并且进了"各人的家，拉着男女下在监里"（使徒行传8:3）。保罗是早期教会恶毒的迫害者。
但当保罗在前往大马士革去逮捕那里的信徒，并将他们带到耶路撒冷时，耶稣在他面前显现：
"忽然从天上发光，四面照着他；他就仆倒在地，听见有声音对他说：'扫罗！扫罗*！你为甚么逼迫我？'他说：'主啊！你是谁？'主说：'我就是你所逼迫的耶稣。"（使徒行传9:3b-5）
（*扫罗是保罗的希伯来文名。）
在加拉太书前两章，我们只能看到保罗成为使徒并开始向外邦人（非犹太人）事工之历程的一个片段。在这封信的介绍中，保罗在建立他的权柄，以及所赐给他的来自神而不是人的福音信息，并且向加拉太人展示神如何一直在使用他传播好消息。
当保罗从耶稣那里得到使命时，他没有跑去耶路撒冷让其他犹太权威来确认，甚至也没有让十二使徒或耶路撒冷教会的长老们来确认。他没有这样做，因为他不需要这样做。保罗的权柄直接来自耶稣。他现在要告诉我们，他又有三年没有和彼得（十二使徒中的领导者）商议，甚至没有要去获得任何形式的推荐。这是因为就保罗对外邦人的事工而言，他与十二使徒的权柄是相同的。
