神说，"要有空气"。空气只是空间，分开诸水之间的空间，意思是天上的诸水离开大地的诸水。诸水一词的意思可能是在液体状态下或湿气中所聚集的水，好像暗示着大地被厚厚的湿气（或水）所包围。当神分开诸水时，祂称这空气为天，就是天空。这是创造的第二天。
圣经从头到尾使用了水和火的主题。彼得后书3:5-7说，"他们故意忘记，从太古，凭神的命有了天，并从水而出、藉水而成的地。故此，当时的世界被水淹没就消灭了"。神不但使大地从水而出，而且也在挪亚时代藉着水毁灭了那同一个大地（创世记7章）。
神应允祂不会再次使用水毁灭大地。彼得后书3:7说，"但现在的天地还是凭著那命存留，直留到不敬虔之人受审判遭沉沦的日子，用火焚烧"。我们在盼望中期待新地，不再有海的新地（启示录21:1）.
天的希伯来文单词是Hashamayim。在犹太传统中许多人认为Hashamayim是意思为"火" 的单词Aish，和意思为"水"的单词Mayim的组合。他们总结到，这个结构是由于宇宙的物理性质-即它是审判和怜悯的平衡。
