神说，"地要发生青草。"藉着创造可繁殖的作物，神在给人类的未来提供食物。结种子的菜蔬和结果子的树木代表指定给人类消费的植物。神说："看哪，我将遍地上一切结种子的菜蔬和一切树上所结有核的果子全赐给你们作食物"（创世记1:29）。
在9-10节中说，这些植物会根据它们的种类来繁殖，这在雅各书中也得到了重申，"我的弟兄们，无花果树能生橄榄吗？葡萄树能结无花果吗？咸水里也不能发出甜水来"（雅各书3:12）。植物只能根据它们的种类来繁殖，这与我们撒种什么收获什么的原则类似，该原则在加拉太书中得到了解释，"不要自欺，神是轻慢不得的。人种的是甚么，收的也是甚么。顺着情欲撒种的，必从情欲收败坏；顺着圣灵撒种的，必从圣灵收永生"（加拉太书6:7-8）。
