罗得离开琐珥，住在山上，这是天使最初给出的指示（第 17 节）。罗得可能害怕琐珥的居民。他可能在所多玛享有一定的豁免权，他的叔叔亚伯拉罕在那里被称为一位强大的战士，也是罗得的保护者。也许在琐珥他没有享有这样的名声。不管是什么原因，我们只知道他害怕留在琐珥。罗得曾经有“羊群、牛群和帐篷”（创世记 13:5）、“大量财产”（创世记 13:6）和许多“牧人”（创世记 13:7-8），住在一座精心建造的“房子”（创世记 19:3-11）；但现在，在上帝的怜悯下，他的家人减少到三个人，他住在一个洞穴里。

于是她们制定了一个计划，让我们的父亲喝酒，然后让我们与他同寝，这样我们就可以通过父亲保全我们的家族。她们似乎没有考虑过去找亚伯拉罕寻求帮助，包括寻找丈夫。琐珥的男人似乎不是一个选择。我们知道女儿们已经接触到了很多道德堕落。她们准备嫁给所多玛的文化。
相反，圣经告诉我们罗得是义人（彼得后书 2:7）。因此，这两个女孩知道她们的父亲不会同意她们的计划，所以她们不得不用酒来欺骗他。
于是，那天晚上，她们让父亲喝酒。罗得喝得酩酊大醉，不知道她（姐姐）什么时候躺下，什么时候起来。看来这两个女孩对父亲的说服力很强。这或许可以解释为什么他留在所多玛，不愿离开所多玛。
