创世记 2:1-3 是第一章的总结。上帝完成了他的工作。既然他已经完成了，就该休息了。后来在出埃及记中，上帝将休息日分开，并使其成为圣日。这里用来表示休息的词是希伯来语“shabath”，意思是停止或静止。上帝并没有筋疲力尽，需要休息。不，上帝宣布工作已经完成。上帝不仅仅是从工作中休息一下，他已经实现了他对宇宙的神圣计划。
