上帝把亚当安置在伊甸园里。伊甸园是一个充满幸福与和平的家。他被委任为伊甸园的掌管者，并被赋予权柄和责任，管理上帝的创造物。
上帝凭着祂的白白恩典，将这座乐园赐给了亚当。同一位上帝塑造了亚当，供应了他一切所需。但亚当也有自己的责任。他必须耕耘、维护上帝赐予他的这座乐园。乐园并非一个无需劳作的地方。
亚当被告知，他可以随意吃园中几乎所有树上的果实，唯独善恶树除外。上帝告诉他，如果他吃了那棵树上的果实，必定会死。亚当为此付出了代价。
亚当只需遵守一条律法，而这棵树就是他所要求的标志和象征。善恶树代表着是非对错，服从或罪孽。这棵树与生命树相对应。上帝曾说过：“因为你吃的日子必定死。” 死亡的必然性并不意味着立即死亡。亚当的惩罚之一是被禁止吃生命树的果子，他将在痛苦中死去，失去他所享有的一切幸福。永生取决于是否在上帝面前。因此，亚当和所有人一样，终将不可避免地死去。
上帝赐予亚当一座恩典的花园（上帝的恩赐）。在生活中，我们也被赋予了上帝恩典的礼物。上帝为我们制定了罗马书中所提到的救赎计划：“唯有基督在我们还作罪人的时候为我们死，神的爱就在此向我们显明了。”（罗马书5:8）就像亚当一样，我们也可以选择。我们可以相信耶稣并获得永生，也可以不信而遭受死亡的惩罚：“因为罪的工价乃是死；惟有神的恩赐，在我们的主基督耶稣里，乃是永生。”（罗马书6:23）
